I have had a couple of people ask to see a better view of my avatar, so here goes.

It is done in raw edge reverse applique. I did the face with colored pencil. I was VERY unhappy with the way the silver in the moon came out, it looks like ironing board cover fabric. Worked out fine for my daughter though, since I gave it to her.

I did try this a little earlier, if I messed up somehow, please disreguard.

annette1952 05-08-2010 04:12 PM

Very Pretty!

Pam 05-08-2010 04:23 PM

The layers of this were as follows: Backing, batting, green/blue, purple/blue, peacock spotty piece, flesh, then black. That is right 8 layers thoughout the whole quilt.

The backing was marked with the design. I sewed on all of the marked lines, flipped it to the front, and started carefully cutting with tiny, sharp scissors, to that layer that I wanted to show in that spot.

In traditional reverse applique, you would have turned the raw edges under and hand stitched in place.

See, easy peasy. Everything I do is easy! I just hope it looks hard, but nothing to it!

sharon b 05-08-2010 04:53 PM

Thanks for the explanation  I am sure it is harder than you make it sound , me I would probably cut a stitching line  Or cit thru a color I wanted to keep  LOL

Eagle Hawk 05-08-2010 05:21 PM

This is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing such a fantastic piece. There are a lot of avatars on here that I would love to see a close up of. They are hard to see in such tiny pictures. Who would have thought there was so much detail in your quilt till we got to see a close up. It looks invovled, but now we can really appreciate it. I am glad someone asked you to post a closer picture. Wow!

beachlady 05-08-2010 05:21 PM

Thanks for posting such a beautiful quilt. Love the girl.

Pam 05-08-2010 05:24 PM

Thanks for the compliments. I am all in favor of buying the most beautiful fabrics you can find and letting THEM do all of the hard work.

It is pretty! I haven't done raw edge reverse applique - I know no (?) edges are turned under, but could you explain in a nutshell the process?? Thanks! Ironing board fabric?? No, I don't THINK so! :-)

sandpat 05-09-2010 05:43 AM

Oh..thanks for posting this, I'm always admiring it in your avatar. I think it is spectacular!! No ironing board cover look to it at all, so stop saying that...it just looks great!

You just sew on the lines, then cut away the fabrics close to the stitching, and leave them. That is it! Truly easy. The hard part is marking your fabric, oh yes, and the fun part is choosing the fabric.

Lyn4ty 05-09-2010 10:48 AM

That is such an awesome quilt, so glad you shared that with us. No way does it look like ironing board material.

Thanks for posting this so quickly. This quilt is so beautiful and original. I never heard of raw edge quilting before like this. I will have to look it up. I read your later response on how to do this, how do you keep the edges from fraying?

I Love this! Colorful, happy, unique, etc came to mind! Tks for sharing.

Pam 05-09-2010 12:22 PM

Since there are so many curves, most of the cuts are on the bias and that does not fray as bad, you do nothing with the edges. This is a wall quilt.

If you wanted to try this with a quilt that would be washed, I would leave more for a seam allowance and just let it fray. Rag quilts are popular, so why not?

Beautiful! I love the face in the moon - you do lovely work. I have never done reverse applique - though I have watched people do it. Another item to put on my "I want to do" list.
