Make a small one & put it over your garage door or on wall next to your back door, if you have room. I'd ;ike to make a small one for my garage. I have a couple of Pennsylvania Hex signs on my, but need a barn quilt.

:D

tinliz 08-27-2011 07:47 AM

Wonderful barn quilt. Is there a story behind the block you chose? BTW what is the name of the block?

katcox 08-27-2011 07:58 AM

I'm also inspired , can you please tell exactly what type of wood and how big, and what kind of paint did you use. I have ideas and have heard from others, but you actually did one. What is your advice? mine will be going on my new storage shed out back.
Thanks

ove the barn quilt and barn. I just finished painting one med. size corn crib , one large corn crib, and a heifer shed. My DH fixed and I painted. Went through 6 ,5 gal. pails of paint and spent many hrs. up in a bucket on a tractor to p Needless to say, not much quiltaint the high spots. This is my 3rd time painting these bldgs. and my last!!!!! Needless to say, not much quilting done this summer.

Looks great! Hey Make the garage door at quilt too!

You did a great job on the barn quilt and painting the barn. We have a red barn just down the road from us. They keep it painted so well. It's always been a landmark. I would call my Mama when I would go to see her and tell her I was at the red barn. When I came home, I would dial my husband and by the time he answered, I would be near the red barn and would tell him where I was.

The name of my block is Mariners Compass. I searched online or in books for an easy design, one that didn't have alot of detail. Painting alot of detail is tough, as it needs about 3 coats of paint. And in my search, I came across a site that recommended using exterior grade plywood. Altho, I didn't. They recommended two coats of primer. And I used gloss latex paint. I gave my design 3 coats of paint. Then you need to protect it with a good quality of exterior polyeurathane. Spar Varnish is great. Give it two or three coats of finish. My husband used screws to put on the barn.
I chuckeled to myself after I chose this pattern because we had a very wet spring and we thought it would never end. I imagined my Mariners Compass barn quilt would be a guide for those sailing by on their Ark!! ;-)

You must REALLY have wanted to do a barn quilt to paint half a barn to get it done!! lol I love the block you selected. And, you were right that it needed to be mounted on a freshly painted barn! Thanks for sharing.

We do think alike!! That was my first idea, but opted for the 4 ft x 4 ft version.

Ginger2010 08-27-2011 12:01 PM

That is really beautiful! Barn and all! Love the quilt block!

It is 4 ft x 4 ft. My barn could easily handle an 8 ft x 8 ft, but I just wasn't that ambitious!

toadmomma 08-27-2011 12:14 PM

Well done looks great. DEB

kristen0112 08-27-2011 12:30 PM

Love it! If I lived closer my daughters and I would come help you paint we like painting

JoyjoyMarie 08-27-2011 12:36 PM

What a great barn! The red paint looks great, and your barn quilt is terrific. I'm thinking of making one for our little "shed," since we don't have a barn. They are so much fun!

sandy l 08-27-2011 12:38 PM

great job

Awesome quilt and paint job on your barn!

bamamama 08-27-2011 12:52 PM

Good job! It tooks some guts to tackle that job! I don't have a barn but am planning to do a smaller version of a barn quilt for the front of my house.
