There they are all playing nicely together. The size before borders is 57 x 72. Can you guess what the strip block on the bottom left is?

This next picture is the possible border. Do I want the burgundy next to the quilt then the chicken wire then the burgundy for the binding or do I want the chicken wire next to the quilt and then a thin burgundy border and binding.
I only picked the burgundy because it is the color of the wire in the chicken wire print. Maybe I don't want the burgundy?

If you have any other ideas for a border and binding I'd love to hear them!
:-D

Maksi 05-02-2010 10:25 AM

I like your top. Beautiful! I think that border is a good idea.

ToucanSam 05-02-2010 10:26 AM

I'd put the burgundy before the chicken wire.

Overall, that is one CUTEEEEEEE quilt! :) Love it!

janRN 05-02-2010 10:29 AM

I like the thin burgandy border first-it "frames" the inner part of the quilt. Either way, your quilt is so cute-you did a great job on it.

MissM 05-02-2010 10:38 AM

I love it . I agree, put the strip color first. Let me know when you are done....and I will send my address.

RatherB Quilting 05-02-2010 11:32 AM

Oh Geez. I totally wanted to be in this swap. Wish I had have! It's turning out beautiful! I agree about the burgandy next to the center, then the wire. :) Show piccies when it's done! :)

topper1 05-02-2010 11:39 AM

wonderful quilt loveit all.

Leota 05-02-2010 11:51 AM

That's a chicky quilt :) he he...
I think the burgandy border and then the chicken wire looks best.

wvdek 05-02-2010 11:52 AM

Love your quilt. Made me giggle to see all the chicks playing together so nicely. Beautiful job on the blocks all.

TammyD 05-02-2010 12:07 PM

Maybe a thin strip of black to start the border, then chicken wire then burgandy? I really like your chickens, a very happy quilt!! :-D

paintedquilt 05-02-2010 12:18 PM

Skinny burgandy, medium chicken wire and burgandy binding\

Great quilt

mamabird3 05-02-2010 12:29 PM

I agree with everyone else...
And this would make a cute backing..

Cute

MegsAnn 05-02-2010 02:04 PM

love it

Martina 05-02-2010 02:12 PM

I got to say I like the wire first and the burgundy on the outside...but that just me!! Either way...I love this top...it is soooo cute!!!

ann clare 05-02-2010 02:26 PM

Beautiful quilt. I'd go for burgandy border first.

sewhappy57 05-02-2010 02:31 PM

OMG! How adorable! I'm kicking myself all the way to the chicken coop for missing this exchange!
I agree Burgandy first then chicken wire!

cjomomma 05-02-2010 02:39 PM

Never seen a chicken quilt before and I must say I really like it.

Ditter43 05-02-2010 03:24 PM

O.K. I'll bite, what is the strip set on the bottom left? I love the quilt. I would like a thin black border , a medium white and then medium burgendy border. If you have any more of the burgendy check, it would be a great binding materia.l My next choice would be the burgendy border first. JMHO :-D

susiequilt 05-02-2010 03:48 PM

Thank you all for your good suggestions.

The block at the bottom left is "Green eggs and ham!"
:-D

coastienest 05-02-2010 03:54 PM

I love your chickens. I just did one with roosters. Maybe they should meet LOL. I also asked the board about borders when I was doing mine. Suggestions were great !!!! I added a thin border that matched my cornerstones and then a black print for the outside border as someone suggested. I previewed a lot of colors from within the quilt but until I used the black, nothing popped within the quilt. So after all this, I'd say use a black border. I'm not so sure I would use the chicken wire. Your eyes needs to rest somewhere. Sorry I am maybe way out there but until I tried it I didn't believe it eitther. Make sure to show us the finished version. Good luck!!!!!

Minnesewta-sam 05-02-2010 04:03 PM

love the chicken wire border idea. I saw same fabric a while back that was like old barn boards...I think that would really frame it nicely if you can find any of it.

littlehud 05-02-2010 05:18 PM

That turned out so cute. Great job.

susiequilt 05-03-2010 04:05 AM

Thanks. These chickens are from the funky chicken swap and I love them all. The ladies did a great job. I'll give the border a rest for a couple of days until I decide. It will be a once in a life time quilt I'm sure.

sandpat 05-03-2010 04:32 AM

Susie, they look great all playing soooo nicely!!! I love the green eggs and ham block...too cute! About the border....I like the solid strip first, next to the quilt, then I'm not sure about the chicken wire (I think its a great backing though!!)...I tend to agree about you eye needing a place to rest...I might use a lighter color next, then another solid color for a border about 3", then bind it...so 1 teensy border, 1 maybe 1" border, then a 3" border...maybe.....I dunno....lay it out, push the dogs/cats to the center of the quilt so you can see the edges and then play.... Lookin' good girl!!! :D

reginalovesfabric 05-03-2010 05:12 AM

what a beautiful quilt, I love chickens and am doing some myself.

flikkem 05-03-2010 05:51 AM

I think a polka dot binding to pick up one of the polka dots in the quilt would be cute.

mimee4 05-03-2010 06:06 AM

Absolutely adorable. Either way you do the border will be right.

gramquilter2 05-03-2010 06:28 AM

I would use the burgandy as the first border too. This is a really nice quilt.

Crickett Sweet 05-03-2010 07:15 AM

I just love your chickens. The concept of the chicken wire on this quilt for a border is great. Personally, I would like to see something more "black and white" There is a lot of white in the quilt already and the chicken wire is pretty white. Do you have any more of that black background with white eggs on it? I think that would set it off great.

AmyS 05-03-2010 07:23 AM

I love it! Adorable

Baloonatic 05-03-2010 09:16 AM

More pics please, they are toooo cute!

Baloonatic 05-03-2010 09:29 AM

I was so excited to hear that my guild was starting a chicken block exchange! But now I'm not sure I'll remain in it. I spent 2 days on each of my 2 (original designs) blocks. One of the blocks I received in exchange might have taken all of 10 minutes to make and the other an hour. I was really disappointed and now I'm not sure how much effort I should put into future blocks, or if I should remain in the exchange. What are your thoughts please?

I think all of us here on the board understand that there are all levels in a swap. (It's required here). The beginners do what they can and the advanced do what they can. If everyone does their best you end up with a great quilt. It gives the more advanced quilters a chance to show their stuff and help the beginners with advise and suggestions. It gives the beginners a chance to see what a really well made block looks like and hopefully learn something for the next swap we are in.
I love the swaps here. I'm sure I will never get too good to swap with beginners!
The key is everyone does their best!
Not knowing your group it's hard to say whether you should stay in or not. how do you feel about teaching? Maybe at a meeting you could talk about chicken blocks and how to do what you do.
:-D

Like some of the ones who spoke up, I would like for those of us who missed out on this one to have a 2nd Funky chicken swap...What do you all think? Are there enough of us to make it work? who sets up the swaps? What do you guys think?

5thdaughter 05-03-2010 11:19 AM

I LOVE your chicken quilt!!! Where did you find all those chicken patterns? Do you share this info? I would LOVE them!

susiequilt 05-03-2010 12:26 PM

This was a swap so I only made a few of those chickens and the other ladies made the rest.
There are a lot of free chicken patterns on the net. Fatcat is one of them. Do a search and see what comes up.

As for another funky chicken swap, start a new post and see if there is any interest. I know there was one chicken swap last year also. It has been a lot of fun and my first quilt with various size blocks so a good learning experience.

5thdaughter 05-03-2010 12:54 PM

thanks for your help!

charismah 05-03-2010 01:01 PM
