I am very proud of this quilt as I never thought I would ever be able to make anything like this! It is full of mistakes, but I'm not worried about it.

Six years ago, I woke up and found out I had a stroke during the night which caused me to lose my center vision. Being a computer programmer and a crafter this really hit me very hard. I no longer can see most of what is in front of me which makes it difficult to do most anything. For example, if I am in a store I have to look for something from down the isle. If it is in front of me I can't see it. I can no longer read very well either as I can only see 3 letters at a time. I also no longer drive as there has been many times there was a car ahead of us that I didn't even see.

I have struggled re-learning how to do things. I go by feel or hold things to my left side in order to see it. Slowly I have tried doing more and more things. Reading is still the hardest for me as I get sick to my stomach and headachy from concentrating so hard, but I have managed to read like a ticker-tape, but very slowly.

My sister-in-law insisted I can quilt. I started making yo-yo's and was doing pretty good. I decided to buy an inexpensive sewing machine in order to sew them together. Then I decided I would try and make a regular quilt.

I did take a class but was so slow that we only got up to the borders so most of instructions came either from the board or my adopted mother/sister: sewcrafty! Thank you sewcrafty, you have been a wonderful help! :)

Well, here it is mistakes and all. Not too bad for a half blind old lady who is as stubborn as hell. :!: :!:

What a lovely gift for your little granddaughter to cherish and a lesson in determination to pass on as her heritage. Hope you have many more years of happy quilting.

I am delighted that you shared this. What a wonderful and loving thing. I love someone who take what they lost, enhance what they have, and put the hurt parts behind them and find joy in what they can do. I think this is a beautiful and certainly very fun quilt and your grand daughter is going to love it.

I think the two us should go roller blading one afternoon right after we finishplaying a round of tennis.

Right after the stroke my husband and I bought new bikes and I tried to ride mine.

I hit a pot hole and flipped the bike not even 500 feet from the house. Because I had bruises all over me from the handle bars etc, and hurt all over he took me to an urgent care.

The doctor said "You are on coumidin and you were riding a bike and you can't see!" I said "Yes!" He then proceeded to yell at me telling me coumidin and speed don't mix. I had to have x-rays as they were afraid I ruptured my spleen. All turned out well, after the bruises faded, except my pride.

But now, I stick to walking.
:) :) :)

Unless you want to play on the WII, I am an easy loser. But stay away from the spare bowling. Once I am able to find the right spot to lose, I am quite good. Got all 20 lanes about 5 times!

dannypanny 04-15-2010 01:45 AM

Hi what a gorgeous quilt...Cannot see any mistakes... and if there are any.. so what!!!!

What an inspiration you must be to those around you. Keep up the good work. ciao

no1jan 04-15-2010 01:50 AM

I want to thank you all for your inspiration! They really help build my confidence!

Yes I am very determined, stubborn but patient. Every time I make a mistake and then fix it, it proves to myself that "I can do that!!" Kind of like the story of "The little engine that could!" but my favorite is the "Little Red Hen"! "Well, I will then said the little red hen!"

It killed me to leave some of the mistakes in, but I needed to look at something to continue to do better.

So hold onto your hats, someday I will be a fantastic at quilting!!! At least to me and my family.:) :) :)
