thankyou no i didn't hand paint the flowers, I printed them onto the fabric using real flowers and a hammer to bash the dye from the flowers into the fabric. 2nd try at posting, hope it works this time

SulaBug 08-15-2009 10:40 PM

no. best to do a trial first, using different thicknesses of material. I found that a medium weight white cotton best.
also try different flowers as some are too dry, these don't come through, and some are too juicy, these bleed into material and smudge.
1. a surface you can use a hammer on
2. lay a peice of (white) material on surface, to blot any excess dye
3. lay another peice of white material on top of the first peice of material, to print on
4. place flower you wish to print on top of all that and another peice of material over all of that and start hammering firm but gently
Do 1 flower at a time. We did this when we were kids hope you like it.

CindyBee 08-16-2009 01:15 AM

Gorgeous, love what you did with the real flowers. I'll bet all kinds of leaves would look super, too! They are both lovely.

Lainee 08-16-2009 05:33 AM

Please show us another close-up of the bashed flower center...how clever!

Love the colors in the quilt.

Ducky 08-16-2009 06:54 AM

Wow! Both are beautiful, but I have to agree about the floral center in the first one. So what is that called, "The Flower Bashing Method?"

CajunQuilter2 08-16-2009 08:16 AM

They are both beautiful.
Where on earth did you find the large print pansy fabric. My moms name is Pansy and I would love to get some of that fabric to make her a quilt.

motomom 08-16-2009 10:09 AM

Kyiav10 08-16-2009 11:06 AM

I got the fabric from the australian quilt fair, but if you go to www.classiccottons.com and click on free quilt patterns and scroll down there are quilt patterns using this fabric. the peice of fabric i have left has that web adress on it and "passion for pansies" printed on it. the free patterns are also named passion for pansies. the company is in the U.S hope this helps you. :)

Wow! What a clever and unique idea to bash the flowers in with a hammer. I would never have thought of that in a million years.

These are very nice! I can't believe these are your first ones. Can't wait to see what you do next!

joeyoz 08-22-2009 08:00 PM

I just attended a small workshop on how to do this technique, I am looking at making myself an apron. We were told to treat the fabric first with Alum & Soda Crystals then once dry tape the flowers in place with masking tape before hammering & hey presto the image is transferred.
Apparently there is a list of other flowers that work just as well as pansies.

BTW I have to say I love both of your quilts
