My first quilt

2 Attachment(s)
While looking at all these amazing quilts folks have posted I have been inspired, and sometimes depressed. I know it takes a lot of practice, but all the quilts I have seen here are so amazing, and I fear my skills will never improve.

But this morning I got a note from my sister about the quilt I gave her. It was my first ever finished quilt. I pieced it (I used 2 cheap jelly jolls from JF) and quilted it, bound it and mailed it off to her to be there for when my BIL got home from surgery the day after Christmas.

She sent me a great note, and I went back to look at my photos. It is not as bad as my memory of it, and I am so proud that she likes it. It is nothing like what I have seen here, but beginners start somewhere

I would love to see other folk's first quilt.

Your quilt is pretty! Don't be so hard on yourself.

huntannette 01-20-2015 06:04 AM

I think you are too hard on yourself....I see a very beautiful quilt.....first you have an eye for color....and if you quilted it yourself , well all I can say is that is perfect especially if it is your first ....I have done many and am still learning from each one I make.....don`t stop because you have it!!!! great work!!!

Grandma Bonnie 01-20-2015 06:05 AM

Welcome to the board. Your first quilt looks wonderful to me! I am sure it is loved and appreciated. I don't have a picture of my first quilt but it isn't nearly as good as yours! Great job - keep it up!

helou 01-20-2015 06:05 AM

This is great! and I love the colors you used... You will see that we are our own worst critics. Pat yourself on the shoulder

Tartan 01-20-2015 06:09 AM

I wish my first, second or third quilt was as pretty as yours! Well done!

Quiltngolfer 01-20-2015 06:20 AM

Your first quilt looks great! You will learn with each new project and you are off to a great start. Enjoy the journey.

Jeanne S 01-20-2015 06:35 AM

I have made about 25 quilts now but still straight line quilt them because I can't get the hang of FMQ! You are doing great!!!

ruthrings 01-20-2015 06:48 AM

My gosh! You're a born quilter! Your points all match. Your free motion quilting has all smooth curves! I just finished #239 and it's no better than yours!

Jackie Spencer 01-20-2015 06:56 AM

Don't be so hard on yourself. Your quilt is wonderful!! Quilting is like everything else, the more you do it, the better you get.

SuzyM 01-20-2015 07:07 AM

You first quilt is amazing and way way way better than mine. Congrats

dcquilter 01-20-2015 07:10 AM

It's lovely! Well done!

SueSew 01-20-2015 07:19 AM

That's a really nice quilt - you chose your fabric very well, jelly rolls or not, and you should certainly be pleased with yourself! And you dived right into a nice FMQ meander!

A complicated pattern can end up looking lousy and a very simple pattern can end up looking great - it's all in the fabric choices and the craftsmanship.

:)

Beautiful quilt. A wonderful first quilt, just keep making them, you are a natural.

SewExtremeSeams 01-20-2015 07:41 AM

My first thought, "You are well on your way with FMQ". The blues are beautiful.

nanacc 01-20-2015 08:26 AM

Thank goodness we didn't think about taking pictures of my first!! I still hesitate to show mine. You did a beautiful job on your quilt! I can't believe its your first!

watson's mom 01-20-2015 08:56 AM

But, sweetie, your first quilt is so much better than so many of us have done, you can't even know it! Pattern, colors, quilting are all just wonderful, a great start and should be encouraging you to keep on sharing many more of your quilts with us!! :):)

Jan in VA (who has been teaching quilting for 30 years and therefore ought to know!!)

Great job!

marymm 01-20-2015 07:19 PM

Great quilt! The first quilt I made was supposed to be a quilt-as-you-go log cabin and I made it for my sister's wedding. The back looked absolutely horrible and I covered it with a sheet and then added some tacking to keep it together! (I haven't wanted to make a log cabin since!) My sister and her husband eventually divorced and I was told that they argued over who got the quilt. She did. She was killed in a car accident a few years ago. Her daughter brought me the quilt a few months ago and asked if I could repair it. It is too far gone. It was apparently well loved and well used. The fabric is really, really faded and worn. I doubt there is a block in it that isn't damaged. I like the idea that she loved it and used it! I'm sure your sister treasures the quilt that you made, too. (It looks great to me and I know a bit more about quilting than I did when I made the one for my sister!)

nativetexan 01-20-2015 07:38 PM

Oh I like that! the fabrics you picked give it a lot of movement.

Grandma Peg 01-20-2015 08:48 PM

Your quilt turned out great, sometimes we are our own worst enemies. Your quilting is wonderful, jealous that you can do FMQ and I still can't after sewing for 14 1/2 years. Keep it up, you are a natural!

heather1949 01-20-2015 09:23 PM

That is awesome :)

Gerbie 01-21-2015 03:37 AM

O.K., so what is your memory of how bad you think your quilt is? I think it looks just great, and personally do not see anything wrong your quilt. You did great on the FM I still don't do well in that area and I have been quilting for years now. So glad your sister liked it and appreciated the love and work that went into making her this gift. Keep up the good work and enjoy your time. Quilting for me is fun and I have enjoyed almost every quilt I have made. Thanks for sharing. Welcome, you will find that folks on this board are very generous with their advice and help as well as very honest with their opinions and criticism. I haven't experienced anyone yet that has been hateful or tacky with their comments.

Laurajbr 01-21-2015 03:43 AM

Thank you all for your comments. Using the jelly rolls made the color choices for me. I notice that my practice blocks have shown me how hard good color choices can be, and how very visible a poor choice becomes!

twinkie 01-21-2015 04:02 AM

For a first quilt I think you did an amazing job. Wish you could see my first one. No, maybe it is better you don't see it. LOL

marshaKay 01-21-2015 05:18 AM

Wow! Very nice. Pretty colors and awesome quilting. Wish my first quilt was that good.
