I am not the "maker of blankets" LOL...I tend to stick to the artsy stuff. But, a dear friend gave me this quilt kit featuring tonga batiks called "solar flare".... I just finished the piecing, now have to buy backing fabric and give this free motion quilting a go... haven't decided on a design yet...any suggestions..also I have no idea what color thread to quilt with?

   Nice!!

sewnbyme4u 03-31-2011 01:17 PM

You are probably right! Each aplique piece is satin stitched with a coordinating thread and I probably don't want anything else competing with this...HMMMMM.....Thanks

ChubbyBunny 03-31-2011 01:20 PM

Wow! You did a beautiful job! Love your quilt.

aurora41 03-31-2011 01:25 PM

Really beautiful. I love the colors. Maybe invisible tread?

PABerard 03-31-2011 01:27 PM

It sure is beautiful. I think I'd go light gray and hope it didn't distract from the gorgeousness of this quilt ~ Pat

Cherylsea 03-31-2011 01:29 PM

I would only stitch in the 4-patch parts; let the melons or petals float.

katier825 03-31-2011 01:30 PM

WOW! That is a great quilt! I like variegated threads and would probably try to find one that blends well with the colors rather than sticking out. Take it with you and unroll several feet and try them out on the different colors.

It's just beautiful!

kimscruzer 03-31-2011 02:27 PM

WOW!!!! Are the petals appliqued ? I love the color combination. This was a kit ? It is awesome. I would be tempted to do stich in a ditch.

What a beautiful quilt--love the colors!

familyfun 03-31-2011 02:39 PM

Wow. That is a great pattern. You did a wonderful job...

sewnbyme4u 03-31-2011 02:45 PM

I can't take credit for the design or the colors here.....this is a kit by Karen Montgomery called "Solar Flare". The kit came with the fabric to complete the top and binding. I am thinking about FMQ a design "inside" the circles....if that makes sense. The petals are fused aplique with a satin stitch all around. I don't want to quilt anything in the petal area.

Chele 03-31-2011 02:58 PM

I think you're a natural! Great quilt!

I don't make blankets either.

I make quilts, there is a big difference.

earthwalker 03-31-2011 03:45 PM

Very beautifully pieced...I wouldn't use invisible thread, but just a neutral...maybe light grey...

rootyr 03-31-2011 03:47 PM
