My Grand Mother's gift to me.

This quilt was made in 1951, it was made by my Grand Mother who was 67 at the time, she was considered a very good quilter. I got it out to show my quilt group so I took a photo. I just thought I would share it with this group too. I truely cherish it; in fact I don't use it, getting it out was such a treat. The second photo is to show the edging she did. Oh, it is beautiful!. It is also similar in design to a quilt I have that was my aunt's grandmother's. Unfortunately, that one is not in good shape. Enjoy your treasure.

That is beautiful! I love her fancy edge with the dresden plate petals! Look at the 1&1/2 inch hand quilted cross hatching done over the entire quilt, that is a true treasure!

You should have this documented. Many states have a documentation team. Check with a local quilt guild to find out about it. They take pictures and get all the information they can about it. Who,what, where, when, and why. It becomes part of the state quilt history. They also like to have some information about the quilter. Write down as much as you know about your grandmother and keep it with the quilt.
Having the picture is also valuable in case the quilt (God forbid) it is stolen.
This is a beautiful quilt and a wonderful treasure.

Too beautiful to squirrel away!! Open a bureau drawer and spill it out; cascade it down the front of your piano; or drape it over a living room chair --- but please don't hide it away, every again!!!

angelwingz 02-29-2012 10:19 AM

It's gorgeous... and I definately think you should use it so it can be enjoyed !

cjackaitlin 02-29-2012 10:21 AM

40MPHK9 02-29-2012 10:25 AM

Wow, that is just lovely. There's something about those OLD quilts...handstitched....that is just so special. The edging is beautiful, too--never seen that on a Dresden plate before!

Linnie 02-29-2012 10:27 AM

Beautiful quilt and great memories

Jadie 02-29-2012 10:33 AM

Wow this one brought back many memories of my own grandmother. She made many quilts and passed her talent on to a few of us. I love the way it is quilted in stright lines, that was the in thing 40 years ago, there was no quilting each block or a fancy design , She quilted the quilt to stay put for many years hold on to the memory
