So this quilt will only have polka dot fabrics in it. I currently have 51 different fabrics going into it. I will probably be adding more as I move along, because I already feel like I don't have enough variety, strange as that sounds. hehehe
So I've been posting some of my progress pictures on Facebook and thought I'd make a thread here. So here are the first 45 of the fabrics! Some piles of cut up squares The first 6 9-patches Massive amounts of triangles... ... turn into these little triangle square units And more of them .... adding in one big setting triangle gives you this! So this is what I had when I went to bed last night: hehe Looooooong ways to go for a king size, eh? I did more this morning than I had expected to! So I put together 3 more of those triangle square pieces w/ the setting triangle. Those, along with 4 big white squares: When you assemble those pieces, you get THIS!! My first full block of the quilt... and you can see where it gets it's name "Dotty Stars" from! (It's supposed to be an 18 1/2" unfinished block size, but mine came out at 18"!! Oops) I've been worrying for the past 2 days that the "darks" weren't dark enough and the star wouldn't be obvious..... what do you guys think? I've been contemplating going shopping for MORE fabrics. In the beginning I felt that 51 different fabs was PLENTY, but when you break them out into color themes (like this is done in greens) you realize you don't have as many as you thought! |
I think the star shows up well.
I thought of you earlier when I saw a bunch of dot fabric at the store. |
Oh gosh, Brazen, This is going to be just adorable! I love your theme and the way it is coming together.
It's looking great! I love that pattern! All those polkas make me drool!
It's comming out great.
Wow these are fantastic! I love the way its coming together. Keep'em coming.!
Looking good. More More More!!!
Holy cow! What an undertaking! It's going to be such fun to watch this come together. I think the star looks great!
I love it!! And I can relate to needing MORE fabrics. When I was working on the one in my pic for my SD, I had to go back to the store several times for one colour or another. I'm glad I did, and if you are going to "colour theme" each block, you may find yourself back at the store too...or raiding your neighbours' stach. ;)
I like that so many ppl share ongoing projext pix. Definitely helps to get the creative juices flowing. :D |
Looks great. Can't wait to see progress and finished product.
all those polka dots are really cute!!
It will be a great quilt!! |
When I was working on a log cabin, I also worried that my lights and darks weren't different enough, but when all the blocks were assembled they were fine. I think your stars will also be fine when assembled. I also think that in a quilt that relies on lights and darks for a pattern it is good to have some areas that aren't quite as defined as others. It makes the eye wander around the quilt to assess the pattern. Your quilt is coming along very nicely. It must have taken a while to find all those polka dots.
I think your star is just great! Wow! What size are your blocks?
Great job--and I see plenty of contrast for this block.
Wow that is looking really nice! Can't wait to see more!
I love the dots. It reminds me of the dots of ice cream you get at Hershey Park an amusement park in Hershey, PA. NASA developed it so that the astronauts could eat them. They are small dots of all different colors of ice cream, my kids use to love them.
That quilt is going to be awesome. Good Job keep up the good work. |
I like it. I love when people get so creative.
Never thought I would mlove polka dots, but this is great. Hmm.... it almost wants me to make one. I think the stars really stand out nice. Great Job!!! |
I love polka dots! Those are some beautiful fabrics.
Lookin' good.
I like it! Keep up the good work! :D
Love all the fabrics.. this is going to be so pretty all done up!
I'm so glad you guys aren't irritated or something like that by me posting repeated pics of the whole process. hehehe Knowing I "need" to post something new keeps me fired up and working!
I'm just starting to put together a red star now. :D I just got home from working 9 hours. Debbie1 - Thank you!! The blocks are SUPPOSED to be 18 1/2" unfinished, but this green one came out at 18" flat. I have no idea how that happened! I guess if they all work out that way, then no problem! I also think that in a quilt that relies on lights and darks for a pattern it is good to have some areas that aren't quite as defined as others. It makes the eye wander around the quilt to assess the pattern. |
I love scrap quilts and really love your dotty quilt. It makes me smile. Thank you for sharing. :)
Here come some reds!!
And I already want more dotty fabrics, so I'm going shopping again. I just don't have enough of each individual color. :) And I now know that I can get just 1/8th yard of each and have plenty for what I'm doing. |
i love it. the star is popping out great. keep up the good work :D
Love your colors. I made a charm quilt using 6" squares. McCalls, October 2007?. Anyway, the quilt has 340 blocks, all different materials + the materials for the sashing. I wasn't so sure while I was making it because it was so busy, but after it got quilted it turned in to my favorite quilt! We use it almost year round. Some of my friends called it interesting...
I have to tell you --- I'm not brave enough to do a scrap type quilt. When I saw the first few pictures, I thought "UGH".....BUT, the finished block is awesome!!!! You've inspired me to give it a try!
I really like the dotty fabric idea - it's going to look fantastic!
Thank you Bevenager!!
AmandasGramma: hehehehe!! I understand, and I love your honesty. hehe I've been looking at this pattern for about a year and a half and just now it's struck me as THE TIME to make it. :) I'm loving it and having a lot of fun, which isn't always the case when I'm making a bed-sized quilt. LOL ----------------- And the red pieces turned into this star: That red star really pops, doesn't it?? So the 2 finished blocks lying side by side: |
They are looking so awesome. I like that you are using different colors. It is going to be a fun quilt. Keep 'em coming.

Thanks KD! I look forward to doing more, definitely. I won't get the chance at a whole day of sewing, again, for a while. I think a blue star is next!
