I would do semi permanet displays for favorite quilts etc on all the blank area. I'd get or make a folding screen for a design wall. Maybe even figure out a way to use sliding closet doors as a divider and cover those with cork and flannel to make a design wall. Figure out something that will work for you.

I am a newbie but how about using pink 2 inch insulating styrofoam (most likely spelled wrong ;)) board, sized to be completely covered by your quilt and pin the quilt on it and then hang on sloping ceiling? Yes, I forgot to mention that a system to mount on the ceiling would be necessary-maybe screw foam board to ceiling first and then pin quilt over it and hide the screws? One idea.

What a beautiful space!!!!!

Pigeon Patty 09-22-2010 10:10 AM

OMG what a wonderful room!! How lucky your are. As far as bending stooping, my friend uses a pingpong table set up in her basment, with bed rises under the legs to make it the right height. This seems to work well for laying out a quilt. If she needs it bigger there her husband helps add either ply wood to extend the table or maybe heavy duty cardboar like from appliance boxes to extend the work space, depending on how much larger and how long she will need it up. Congrats again on a great space!!

Love it. I'm house hunting and every time I see a room like yours I say, "craft room!"

I wouldn't want to cover that window. Hmm. In order to have wall space, I'd create a wall out of thin air. A medium height standing bookcase. A room divider as a design wall. I wouldn't go overboard though. Love that room's openness.

Tink's Mom 09-22-2010 10:31 AM

How about a pulley system with a shower rod/dowel rod between the pulleys for display of a quilt. The lower ends can then be tacked to the wall.

Mousie 09-22-2010 11:20 AM

right out of a magazine! :-D

Aunt Doggie 09-22-2010 11:35 AM

WOW!! You are SOOOOO lucky!! To even have a "kitchen" in your area!!! And I thought I was lucky to just recently have gotten the Loft area of our townhome for my studio!!!!

As for a design "wall" why not try the idea I am going to do...
Take a large (old fashioned) window shade and replace vinyl with flannel or cover vinyl with flannel....That way you can put up high, like above one of those side windows, and just pull it down when you need to use it, and then "snap" it back up when not in use! I saw idea on internet but they wanted Boo-coo bucks for it!! Going to try making my own!

Kate 09-22-2010 11:55 AM

I could live in that room! Love it!

Marye 09-22-2010 01:01 PM

For your designer board go to vanishingdesignboard.com and look at that, You can put it above the window while you design and then just roll it up when finished. I am getting one because I don't like seeing it out all the time.

Hehehehe It has no bathroom. Iasked DH how hard it would be to add a bathroom. I do have a bed in there behind the couch. Often I just don't even make it to the bed. I just sleeep on the couch. My friends love it and are very familiar with the mini frig.

HELLuvvANGEL 09-22-2010 11:14 PM

My mind instantly sees your window behind the TV as a design wall. Many ways to make that but the cheapest.... get the largest flannel backed tablecloth, with a color u love, sew ribbon in the top corners so u can roll it up and tie it closed when not in use. I have a small tiny space and thats what im making for over my paintings on the wall. I found the tablecloth at the dollar store. I do like the ping pong table idea alot too!! So many great ideas!

Yes, there is a serious lock but the lock is a keypad and you need a code to get into the room. This lock is to keep people from going into the room. I hoped to stem the flow of little munkins, aka my kids, that mess with my sewing machine and stuff. Have still 10 to 11 kids that are regulary living at the house and the two youngest just turned 5. There is no lock to lock yourself in though. So when I am in there they all tend to come visit mama, talk, watch t.v. and snack. LOL It is cozy though.

Beautiful room, looks like you could live up there. Good for DH and lucky you, Enjoy!!!

I love your space. I can see where the slanted walls could be a problem. Go on http://www.allpeoplequilt.com I think it was that I saw a room one of the designers has that is very similar to yours and she has quilts hanging on those sloped walls. The rolled storage units are a good idea for your wall storage. Good luck with your room. You need a nice large table to work on.

Jeandrig 09-24-2010 04:21 AM

Where is the bed? Looks like you could live there 24/7
It's very beautiful and I know you enjoy it.

krob 09-24-2010 05:29 AM

Go to www.vanishingdesignwall.com I think they were advertising in the Oct. issue of Am. Patchwork. You pull it down like a projector screen when you need to use it, then it vanishes! A little on the pricey side but it would not take away from your nice room. I would also get some shelving units from say Costco, on rollers, they are about $27 and either put baskets on them to put my material in or stack my nicely folded material on them. You could then roll them out of the way and roll them easily when you needed to get to the back one. They could be "stacked" 2 or 3 deep---you could even make a portable wall with them. You have all sorts of possibilities!!!

Friendly Quilter 09-24-2010 05:31 AM

Very Nice.

Therese 09-24-2010 07:00 AM

Love your studio. Have you thought about a design wall on wheels, similar to a clothing rod on wheels? You could use both sides! I saw this in a magazine and loved the idea of rolling it from the sewing machine to the ironing board, where ever it needed to be! Couldn't be huge but definitely convenient.

Therese 09-24-2010 07:32 AM

Wonderful room! Have you thought about a rolling design wall, similar to a clothing rack at a dept. store? I saw this in a magazine and loved it. It's portable (goes where ever you need it!) and you can use both sides. It loks like you have room.

I think I would put a large old dinning room table under the window. That why I could use the light from outside as well as enjoy the changing of the seasons. Just a thought.

diannemc 09-24-2010 09:49 AM

WOW! Very nice room...

grannypat7925 09-24-2010 11:34 AM

What a cozy space! I am envious!!

iltoaz 09-24-2010 11:36 AM

What a great spot - you never have to leave; it has all the comforts of home. Enjoy your space.

seamstome 09-24-2010 11:52 AM

I am so jealous....I have almost an identical space that is unfinished and it has been my DREAM for years to finish it out like that. Unfortunately, now that property values have dropped so much, I dont have the cash to do it.

Bobby's Girl 09-24-2010 12:00 PM

Wow! How nice. If I had a place like that in my house, I'd go in and never come out. I know it's heavenly to have that space for yourself, especially after living in a mobile home. We used to live in a mobile home, and even though I enjoyed living there, I was happy when we moved to a house.

marla 09-24-2010 01:03 PM

Could you get something like an old school chalkboard that is portable and make this into your design wall? You may have to rearrage furniture. Some school buildings that have damage to the chalk board may sell it to you at a good price. Ask the School board. It may be easy to make if your DH is handy.

That room is so beautifully designed for work and comfort it would be amazing if you are able to be in it alone!

lotus63000 09-24-2010 03:46 PM

WoW!....It looks like the guest house more than the sewing studio...I love your studio...

tutty 09-24-2010 04:12 PM

I have a folding table that I put bed risers' under and raise it to cut fabric !! What a back saver ! hope that helps in one area for you too.

jitkaau 09-24-2010 04:36 PM

Lovely area. My suggestions for you would be (if it fits) to put the couch against the window under the sloping ceiling, with the other easy chairs facing into that area. The table could then come out to the space opposite your sink and food prep area. Have storage units on wheels - even if they could fit inside the cupboards you speak of, and be wheeled out. Cork floor tiles mounted onto a hinged board could work for display area. I had one that looked like a picture on the wall when I was not using it, and it flipped down to transform into a display board when I needed the design wall. My father made it for me.

Annz 09-24-2010 04:36 PM

Oh that room looks so cozy.
