Some pictures of my some what still new to me Quilt studio. We moved from a mobile home to a new house 1 1/2 years ago and I got the awesome bonus room for a studio. My husband made it a special place for me. Many of the items have their own story. Like one of the sewing boxes is from my mother, an old bible from my grand parents and the couch from a dear friend. They all passed away but their items have a special place up there with me. One of the things I strugle with are lack of display wall and that the storage is all under the roof part behind the little doors. As my body begins to get older I am strugling with laying the quilt out on the floor and bending or crawling into the storage areas. I welcome any creative suggestions.

love your quilting studio

That is an absolutely wonderful room! You asked for suggestions for a display wall, is that a design wall or a place to display finished quilts? For a design wall, how about a board that leans on a perpendicular board attached to it -- like a picture frame that sits on a table?
For the storage under the eves, maybe there is a way to put tubs or shelves on wheels to easily move them in and out?

nikki128 09-21-2010 09:41 PM

Oh wow, that is the most amazing space!

[quote=Annaquilts] One of the things I strugle with are lack of display wall and that the storage is all under the roof part behind the little doors.

First, you have all kinds of display space --I can see those sloped ceilings alive with special quilts and wall hangings! Maybe get a folding screen that you can use as a design wall while you are creating!

As for the tucked out of site and away from access storage area --maybe open that up and use layered storage like the museums do --pull out huge shallow drawers that you can then access your stuff from. Just a thought.

Annaquilts 09-21-2010 09:51 PM

Thanks for the ideas! I can visualize the pull out storage but not the display wall. I think the pieces of fabric would fall off the ceiling. I know I eyeballed all that flat surface above me too.

Oh, don't we all know it! I bought a craft table that has two fold down 'leaves' that, when put up, give me a large work surface about 5.5 feet long and 30 inches wide, and at a height that is comfortable to work from. The leaves are supported and the support is part of the design of the craft taBLEWhen the leaves are down, I can stow it in a corner, as it is only about 2 feet wide when folded down.

I'm like you, I don't think a flannel display wall would hold blocks on those slopes, but I think a Block Butler might, because it is definitely sticky to touch. Otherwise, what about the kind of display wall that some people use, that is like a roller blind? If you fixed it to one of those sloping ceilings, when you pulled it down, it would hang straight.

You have a terrific room, and I envy you all that space.

tolepainter54 09-21-2010 10:19 PM

WOW! Can I come play at your house? What a wonderful room.

vintagemotif 09-21-2010 10:35 PM

Wow! You have a nice studio to display sewing machines. I saw your featherweight box on one dresser/cabinet. I can picture more vintage machines displayed on those beautiful dressers. Or you could drape a lap size quilt over a portion of one, or make a quilted table runner.
That one tall wall by the door could be use as your display wall for quilts that you rotate around through the year. That is if you don't mind finding a new location for that tall cabinet that sits in front of the wall. Or leave the tall cabinet there, but open up the doors to show off your finished quilts or pretty material stash. Place a vintage machine that you will not be using on top of that tall cabinet. Love the fact that you have lots of windows to bring in nature light. Does that striped basket have any items in it? Love all your storage space. You need a treadle in this room, a must. Is that a coffin in the back by the green chairs? You are one lucky gal.

Feather3 09-21-2010 10:37 PM

Nice room.

I'd suggest a folding cutting table. http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog/p...DID=xprd830869 JoAnn's sells them, as do other sewing/quilting supply sites. I love mine. They can be folded down & take up little room. It has wheels, so it's easily to move. Mine sits up all the time tho. I got the big cutting mat to go with mine. I used to crawl around on the floor too, but no more. They aren't big enough to lay a full size quilt on, but it's much easier on the knees & back & great for cutting.

My sewing room is in a small bedroom, with a tiny closet. My huz says it's dangerous in my sewing room, LOL. I have a big old metal desk with one machine sitting on it, a 2nd machine in a sewing cabinet. My serger sits on the end of the cabinet leaf. My coverstich machine is sitting on a file cabinet & I have to move/set it up where the serger is when I want to use it. I have a folding cutting table, 2 sections of stackable shelving. There's a path from the door to my machines. Small TV up on the wall. I purchased heavy duty plastic shelving at Lowes & a rolling cart (got that at Wal-Mart) with 5 drawers. I also use the very large totes that I can stack on the floor. On one of the shelves I have smaller stackable totes for other items. I tend to buy everything in bulk, so I have separate totes for marking pencils, elastic, thread, buttons/snaps/etc. I quilt & do garment sewing as well, so I have tons of sewing items. I'd love a bigger room, but that's not possible. My industrial sewing machine is in a 2nd bedroom, that we also use for exercise equipment & it also has a full size bed & file cabinet. I have to move the one exercise machine to use the sewing machine. We're crammed in.

What you choose all depends on what it is you need to store. One idea may be to have some sort of movable shelving built for your storage closets. Sort of like kitchen pantries, where you can pull them out & shove them back in. You might be able to buy pre-made shelving & add wheels to it. I'd go look at the options at Lowes or Home Depot & see what you can come up with. They have plastic & metal shelving. I think you can also get wire bins, which could be mounted to shelving. These sites might give you some ideas on what's available(look thru all the catagories): http://www.containerstore.com/welcom...FYs65QodFjrKCw

A design wall (I don't have one)...maybe you could have someone make you a fold down wall on wheels.

Playtime is Thursday night from about 6:30 to 10 pm. My other buddies come too. Might be a bit of a long drive from Fresno though.

I wonder if you could use one of those room dividers that would be freestanding. Then you could mount your cork board or styrofoam covered with felt on the back side for a display board while using the other side for storage? Just as thought. Or even build a room divider (on wheels if you like) that is flat on both sides for where you could have 2 display boards & be working on more than one project at a time? Something similar to the old chalkboards that were able to be wheeled into a classroom. Ok...that's my contribution of ideas..Hope you find one you like!!

Sew Krazy Girl 09-21-2010 11:16 PM

Oh man, what I wouldn't do to have your studio. First I would rearrange the furniture so I could set up a folding cutting table (or 2). There's no way I could be up and down on the carpet. The cutting mat could be hidden under the carpet when not in use to keep it flat. Yep-I've done this in a pinch. The sliding shelves for your fabric is the way to go.

With all these suggestions, I know you'll use your creativeness and put it all together to your liking. Have fun!

dgmoby 09-22-2010 01:05 AM

I don't know if this would work or not, but for displaying wall-sized quilts you could use two of those 'pincher' type boards per quilt - one at the top and one at the bottom. If the sides of the quilt needed support also, you could use either small appliqué pins or another set of boards. This type of hanging may give you room for a few smaller quilts along the sloped walls.

I also think the rolling/folding tables would be good - or else just set up a large table in the center with the wire or wooden baskets underneath it for storage. The table could be multi-purpose. That would mean a rearrangement of some of the furniture, but it could possibly be done along one sloping wall as well.

Beautiful room :)

Wow!!!! I love it.

Go on Craigs list and find a fold up ping pong table. It works great for pinning the biggest of quilts. When it is not needed you can fold it up against a wall. Put flannel on the bottom side and it can work as your design wall when folded up. They are great!

SueDor 09-22-2010 02:14 AM

I am sure someone already mentioned this, but what about a room dividers and cover it up with a flannel blanket.

http://www.roomdividerstore.com/

I am pretty sure someone here has done that.

Love you sewing room. I too know about those angled ceilings.

raptureready 09-22-2010 02:50 AM

I think I would get a pull down blind for the window by my sewing table and attach some flannel to it for a design wall. That way it you would be able to roll it up when you didn't need it. There's also a video link on here somewhere about laying out your project on a table and rolling it onto boards. Then you roll you a little at a time and baste, roll out a little more and baste. You might try purchasing some boards of different lengths and some folding tables that you could set up when you needed and take down when not in use. You have a lovely studio.

p.s. You can also use one of those cardboard folding cutting mats (used for dress patterns), a couple of cheap curtain rods, some flannel and some large bulldog clips. Attach the flannel to the board, then use the clips to attach it to the curtain rods. The rods keep it from folding up. When not in use, detach the clips, fold and store it away.

Now thats a woman cave. LOL. Great space

I like the idea of a roller shade...or, since your DH is so clever, he could make a rigid frame that is hooked to the ceiling on one side with hinges and the other side can be raised/lowered as needed. When lowered, it would hand straight down for you to work on and when raised be flush with the slanted ceiling - use cording for raising/lowering and tie to brackets on the wall to hold in the closed position.

Oh! Anna I'm green with envy. Lucky lucky you. What a beautiful studio you have.

Can I come over and sew? LOL I don't think I would ever leave if I had a sewing room like this. Any way you can put up a shade over your big window and make it a design wall?
We hope to see some of your quilts you make in this great space.

clem55 09-22-2010 05:58 AM

Others have mentioned pull out shelving behind your closet doors, but my suggestion is not shelving but deep drawers. A friend had drawers built into an attic space and from the room side it looked just like a chest of drawers. I had my hubby do that in my kitchen closet, I could only have one drawer plus shelves( made a pantry), but that one drawer sure holds a lot! It's about 10 inches tall by 36deep and wide. He bought really heavy metal drawer slides. You can only go "up" so high or you won"T be able to get in the drawer when you pull it out, but now you can even buy tracks for cabinets that let you have pullout/drop down space.

Deb watkins 09-22-2010 05:59 AM

Holey Moley! What a great room! Bonus indeed!

sahm4605 09-22-2010 06:49 AM

i don't know if this has been suggested but along the lines of a room divider what about getting a cubical wall. they are almost always covered in a fabric/carpet that would hold the blocks. and you could always pin them. I think that maybe getting those old medical records filing cabinets to store your fabric on would be nice. you could paint them or cover them in fabric if you wanted too. I would "hang" your quilts on the sloped ceiling when they are done or waiting for binding to be put on for finished. that way you will remember which ones are almost done and you don't have to fold them up.
you are really lucky to have such a large work space to sewing. I would love to have one that large. well i would love to have one period. i use a corner of my living room to store my stuff so the kids don't get into it and then when all are asleep expand out into the living room. good luck and show us pics when you are done.

That was me for years. Thirteen of us in a mobile home. Good memories though and many of my quilts were made there.

Annaquilts 09-22-2010 07:04 AM

I am taking in all the ideas. I am not sure how to utilize all the ceiling ideas but I will run them by DH. He is the one implementing a lot of that stuff. Some of the ping pong table/room devider ideas I can visualize. And the storage space definitely would benefit from some kind of pull out shelves drawers. It is a work in progress. Thank you for all the ideas. Very helpful.

brighmet 09-22-2010 07:23 AM

Such a great space. I would probably be in alot of trouble with that room. With the kitchen in there I would never have to leave that room!!!! Is there a lock on the door!!!!!!!!!!!!
