For the storage under the eves, maybe there is a way to put tubs or shelves on wheels to easily move them in and out?

Ditto, I was thinking the same thing about the wheels and using a design wall that is portable.

what a beautiful room. Love it!

I'm like you, I don't think a flannel display wall would hold blocks on those slopes, but I think a Block Butler might, because it is definitely sticky to touch. Otherwise, what about the kind of display wall that some people use, that is like a roller blind? If you fixed it to one of those sloping ceilings, when you pulled it down, it would hang straight.

You have a terrific room, and I envy you all that space.

Regarding the Block Butler. I had been wanting to get one for several years and I finally bought one, the 6 foot size. It sticks to the wall just fine but when I place my blocks on it, they fall off, sometimes the same day. Perhaps it is due to high humidity. So I then stuck pins to hold them to the design wall. That worked but then the glue stuck to the pins and now I have to clean the pins.
Has anyone else run into this problem?

Blue Bell 09-24-2010 07:10 PM

By the way, your room is lovely. I am so jealous.

My sister owns a house with the same under the eve storage problem... she recessed dressers and bookcases in place of the doors. She even had an insert made that pulls out and has a hanging rod on it so she can hang clothes and such on it.

A very beautiful sewing room.

IBQUILTIN 09-24-2010 09:26 PM

You might put plant hanger hooks in the ceiling, hang chain from them, then put your quilt on a sleeve. I hope that sounds right to you

DebraK 09-24-2010 09:27 PM

beautiful room. I would never leave ;-)

wraez 09-24-2010 09:40 PM

Comfy-cozy was my first thought while looking at your photos. You have a wonderful quilt studio to get lost in while making your creations.

love it

I love your room, hard to believe it's out here in CA. Don't see many homes like that. It looks so cozy, had a cousin with a bedroom like that. We always played in those tiny closets. Looking at that brought back memories, thanks for sharing.

golfer 09-25-2010 07:09 AM

I think that I could hibernate in your sewing room. I looks great.

Riversong 09-25-2010 07:15 AM

I would never leave that room!!!

ragamuffin 09-25-2010 10:21 AM

Annaquilts-this is my suggestion. Move your sofa and chair onto the carpet, face the TV but bring your TV onto the carpet also. Put the 2 drawer chests back to back and protecting the surfaces, put a top on them to make a cutting center unless it is too high. Have peg boards, again with protection, down both sides of the chests. Hang all your goodies on there, or even baskets available now. Then in both window areas, make long desk/areas the height you want, and get those 6" deep drawer plastic units on wheels and slide them under. They hold folded fabric/fat quarters nicely. Put that dining room table behind the sofa, making a sewing area. When working on something large, drape it over the back of the sofa. Get rods, like curtain rods, and put them on the ceiling in the area where the TV is. Or you can put the rods the whole way across the dormer area. Whatever it on the rods will hang straight down. Another suggestion - open the doors on that
tall unit, put a bar with a "U"-type groove in it to hold the doors open and you have an instant display area. My friend has almost the same room. Her stairwell is open and she drapes quilts over the banisters. Good luck. I would love it myself.

I love your space! This is very much what I would like to have.

the real misfit 09-25-2010 04:54 PM

what a beautiful room you can just stay there all day i would like a room like that maybe someday

Quilter Day-by-Day 09-25-2010 05:54 PM

Design wall; Have your DH or a friend make a frame on wheels with peg board covered with a flannel sheet and if you need more stability put a board on back that opens like an easel support. Hope this helps. Like your room.

malega 09-25-2010 06:06 PM

What a nice space to sew it looks good.

Gramof6 09-25-2010 06:38 PM

You have a gorgeous room! Just beautiful. I think it is cozy & inviting. Have you googled Design Wall? I bought a portable that I bought in Houston 1 yr @ the lg Quilt Festival. They come on 3 sizes and were the only answer for me. I have no spare walls for one. So this stands & I take it down when not in use. Works great too for photographing.

rainbowquilt 09-25-2010 07:23 PM

Wow! This room is Gorgeous! (and im full of envy, hehehe) You must be very proud of your own sewing room. Im still trying to even just find the bottom part of the floor to even begin to start sewing again.

BrendaB 09-25-2010 07:46 PM

Wow! That is gorgeous! It looks like a doll house. :-) When I read "rafters" I thought maybe yours was gonna look like mine, but got a big surprise. What a wonderful space. You did a great job.

zz-pd 09-25-2010 10:22 PM

I love your sewing room, its beautiful.
You could clear that nice big table off while you are basting the quilt. use the table to drape your quilt on, and pin, spray, or tack your quilt, and then slid it off the table as you work on it. God bless.

golfer 09-26-2010 10:23 AM

You are good. Are you an "interior quilt room designer"?
That is the new title I have given to you.

cw1947 09-26-2010 01:16 PM

How lucky are you! All that space just for you. I think that a piece of flannel hung from the sloped wall would serve the purpose. And you will diffentely need a folding table. I know I can't get down any more to work on the floor. Well really, it's the getting back up part
Enjoy your room.

AtHomeSewing 09-26-2010 01:45 PM

Incredible space, you are so fortuneate!

Pardon me while I wipe the drool from my lips...your quilting studio is beautiful! I quilt with my sewing machine on top of a card table in my son's old bedroom...ha. Your quilt space is a dream of mine.

My thought is to put a long curtain rod across those 2 windows & hang flannel -covered foam core sheets (with tabs) on it when you need a design wall. Then just remove them when you aren't using it. They store easily behind or under a couch usually.

quilt addict 09-27-2010 05:51 PM

Anna, I'm jealous too. I will be up to visit you and help rearrange the furniture. Although my Bible study is on Thursday night so will have to be another time. I love everyone's ideas.

my suggestions is I agree about focusing on the area where the dining table is and reducing the foot print of the seating area. I am imagining a design wall/quilting fram that hangs from the ceiling. It would be on pullys with clips on one end to let go when you wanted as a design wall. When you want to sandwich a quilt you can use the pullys to make it the height that is most comfortable for you.

I agree with pull out storage under any slanted ceiling that is too low to stand under.

I like the idea of a roller shade...or, since your DH is so clever, he could make a rigid frame that is hooked to the ceiling on one side with hinges and the other side can be raised/lowered as needed. When lowered, it would hand straight down for you to work on and when raised be flush with the slanted ceiling - use cording for raising/lowering and tie to brackets on the wall to hold in the closed position.

I was thinking along those lines, I knew a seamstress that had a cutting table that folded back up to the wall when not in use..

Rusty's Mama 09-29-2010 09:14 PM

Can we come visit???? Your hideaway is perfect and its a sewing room to boot. You win the big prize!!!! Love your space!

marla 10-05-2010 08:22 AM

I don't have room either for a display wall so I use one of those display boards that are made of corragated cardboard and I put it behind the door or under the sofa when not in use. You can find them at Staples of Office Max. Just an Idea. God Bless.

Your room is beautiful. Seeing your picture brings back fond memories of my Aunt Doris who had a room just like that. I converted it while going to college and she let me rent it for $50.00 a month. Thanks for posting :)
