It is beautiful! See if one of the LQS like Windy Moon knows a reputable appraiser.

Geri B 06-06-2016 09:57 AM

To bad you couldn't get the history of the woman who actually made it.......to complete its provenance. You certainly found a treasure...how sad the family did not realize what they had

angelmama22 06-06-2016 10:06 AM

So glad you found the quilt and appreciate the amazing work that was done on it. Isn't it too bad to think that a lot of the work we are doing today on our quilts will have a similar fate? As someone said before...only those who quilt can truly know and appreciate the amount of time and effort that go into the quilts we make.

I am wondering if it is one of the whole cloth quilt kits you could get from Herrschener's? I loved getting their catalog in the mail and would keep them forever enjoying just looking at the kits. Years ago they had large sections of printed cross stitch embroidery and I always thought some day I would find the time to make one. But the closest I got was the baby quilts that I made for friends.

You will be a good caregiver to this beauty. What a story. If you can document the information of the maker and your story it will help keep the history of this stunning quilt alive. You did good!
peace

That is exquisite and I think you got a great deal for under $100. I am very happy for you that the stains came out.

What a treasure! Antiques Roadshow needs to see this!

quilter2theend 06-06-2016 11:41 AM

My mother cross stitched the exact same quilt in the early 1970's and it was never quilted till 1986. My sister had it and it was becoming very thin so I rescued it and had a new layer of batting and a new backing put on it and then myself and an Amish lady tied it. I also put a label on it with my mom's name and the name of the lady that did the original quilting. Glad you rescued yours!

Wow! What a beauty! It astounds me how family members can let go of such heirlooms. But I know you'll give it the TLC and place of honor it deserves.

MargeD 06-06-2016 12:39 PM

It's absolutely gorgeous and well worth far more than $100, so you got a great deal and the quilt found a new home where it will be well loved, I'm sure.

How wonderful for this treasure to find its way into the life of someone who appreciates all the time and love invested in it. Congrats on a wonderful find.

I have this same quilt. The kit was purchased at The J. L. Hudson Company store at the Northland Shopping Center in Southfield, MI before 1975. My Aunt did the embroidery on the stamped fabric. It was quilted by Amish ladies my Aunt knew. My quilt was completed in 1976. It was not a Fingerhut kit and I can't remember the kit manufacturer.

I have that exact quilt I've worked on off and on since the seventies. It's about a quarter quilted. I really should finish it.

tkee, do you have any part of the packing from the kit? I'd like to know to add it to my records for my quilt.

BrendaK 06-06-2016 09:12 PM

Lucky you. Beautiful. BrendaK

This is absolutely stunning and worth keeping.

But you know what...some people just don't know and don't care. I am sure that my sons will bundle my quilts up and put them in a black garbage bag and drop them off at the nearest Goodwill on their way out of town!

Karamarie 06-07-2016 03:21 AM

What kind of stitching is it - embroidery, etc? Is it all hand stitched? It's beautiful.

sewnsewer2 06-07-2016 03:43 AM

Wow you lucked out! It's gorgeous!

Quiltngolfer 06-07-2016 05:23 AM

Wow! What a great quilt! Congratulations to you. I'm so glad the quilt ended up with someone who appreciates quilts.

Yes it is all hand cross stitched and then hand quilted. The quilt is quite large and heavy to maneuver around to inspect it for any residual staining from the cedar chest. This reminds me, I need to go and empty my cedar chest and get a queen sized crocheted bedspread out to check it for damage like this quilt got from storage. I haven't been into that chest in 12 years.

Unfortunately, I feel just about the same way....lots of my stuff will be at Goodwill too.....when I go to the local GW, I sometimes just shake my head...especially if I see something there that I have in my home! Or worse yet, in an antique store!

dinlauren 06-07-2016 06:53 AM

That lady sure knew what she was doing! It is lovely and obviously many, many hours of love and labor went into that. You are so lucky to have gotten such a great buy. Have you considered writing its history down to include with the quilt? If you had the family's names it would make it even more special down the road to others. Glad you were in the right place at the right time.

rilene 06-07-2016 06:55 AM

What a find! A real treasure!

sash 06-07-2016 08:03 AM

That is just beautiful and shame for family letting it go. I too would have kept it and cherished it, but that is just me.

LeslieSusan 06-07-2016 08:18 AM

Most quilt shop owners know the best most knowledgeable appraisers, if they are not one themselves. Ask at your quilt shop for one in your area.

Jingle 06-07-2016 11:48 AM

A beautiful quilt, you are so lucky to have it.

RedGarnet222 06-07-2016 01:34 PM

Okay gals, the man I bought it from finally came though with a tiny bit of information. The lady's name was ester (no last name) but she passed away a few months ago at the age of 92. It came from a Latimer, Pa auction house, I believe. That is where the man who sold it to me is from.

Now don't kill me, but, I sent it to the nevada diabetes association for an auction this thursday night. There will be tons of women there at a wine tasting. My things have always gone for much more than they are worth during the sale. I have never attended myself. I don't drink. There will be a starting bid price of 500.00 on it. I just couldn't resist sharing my quilt to help the kids.

Donnasue 06-07-2016 02:02 PM

That is truly stunning!! Lucky you.

lass 06-07-2016 03:32 PM

Lucky Lucky you!

Mamia 06-08-2016 05:18 AM

Lucky you it's gorgeous.

Sorry, I think the paperwork is all gone. I'm out of town currently, but will double check when I get home.

If you find any paperwork when you return home, I'd appreciate it. Think the company name began with the letter "P" and don't know what I think that.

cowgirlquilter 06-10-2016 11:26 AM

What a beautiful treasure!

RedGarnet222 06-10-2016 04:25 PM

The quilt sold for six hundred dollars last night. Enough to send one needy kid to diabetes camp buck on full scholarship. I am thrilled.
