My Steal Deal of a handmade Quilt ...
2 Attachment(s)
I happened across this quilt while cruising around E Bay. The lady who made this quilt is ninety and had to go into a home. Her family had this quilt sold at an estate auction, and the man who bought it sold it to me. It had never been used or washed and had spent it's life in a cedar chest. There were some staining from the chest on it and so I carefully treated it and washed it. All the staining came out, thank goodness. I haven't had the time to press it yet. But ladies this quilt is hand embroidered, hand quilted and huge! I was astounded at all of the lovely feathers and close cross hatching small stitches on this quilt. I am still in shock I was able to buy this quilt for just under a hundred dollars! What???!! I wish I knew a good appraiser to find out what it really is worth.

Beautiful. Quilts aren't worth what we think they are worth. There are appraisers that show up at many guild meetings.

Sorry about the poor picture. I had to spread this out onto the living room floor and take the pic from the stair landing. The dang sun wasn't cooperating either. But, oh well ... I might add this is not a stamped quilt. It was from what I can see, an original design.

beautiful quilt!!!

WOW, what fabulous hand work, can't believe her family would have let an heirloom like that go! Lucky you!

Visit AQS(American Quilters Society) website for a list of certified appraisers in your state. Beautiful quilt.

Wow, what a lovely find. It's in great shape & I think you got it for a really good price.
Mine is much worse for wear, but it was used a lot before I packed it away. I cross-stitched mine back in the 70s. If memory serves, it was a Fingerhut kit that had the pattern stamped on it. |
That is gorgeous

I can't imagine if I had a quilt my mother or grandmother made that I would ever let it go. Great find

Beautiful!!!

Stunning!!! Your quilt is a treasure. I second the APQS appraiser suggestion.
That is gorgeous! You got a wonderful deal, and it will now be taken care of for years to come.
Very nice, You are lucky to have it !

What a score! It's beautiful.

That's some amazing needle work. So glad this quilt found a good home. Was there any documentation about the name of the maker and when it was made included?
The original owner would be pleased that you have it, at any price.
It's beautiful Red. I'm glad you gave it a good home. I'm sure you'll love having it.
That makes me sad. I wonder why her family didn't want to keep it. But I'm glad you were able to buy it. Only quilters know how much time and love goes into a quilt.
It's a beautiful quilt!
OMG! Under a hundred dollars. Honey you made a great deal. Cherish it. I am so happy it ended up in someones hands that can really appreciate it. It's such a shame that her own family didn't understand it's value. Wow! Nice find!
What a treasure. Glad you got it.
How remarkable! Beautiful!! So glad you appreciate it.
That is lovely.
So glad you were able to rescue this quilt. When you are in your 90's, you don't always have family to inherit these kind of treasures.
Beautiful! lucky you! Diane C.

It seems that people who do not do this kind of work do not appreciate the time and talent that it takes. Thankfully the quilt made it into hands that do treasure it and recognize the work. I have several of these types of quilts or the kits that my mother purchased from Hershnerrs, probably in the late 1970s-1980s. The designs and the quilting marks are stamped. They do come out. In fact, just this past year I finally got one of the quilts finished and had to "hurry" as time was lessening the quilt markings and I wanted to use their expertise with all the feathers and such that they had on the fabric. They are indeed gorgeous quilts!

Wow that's beautiful....Wonder if you could find the name of lady and label the year and maker's name on the back....
Wow, it is a beauty!
That is awesome. Cherish it.
A beautiful quilt and such a lot of handwork! My grandmother used to hand quilt a lot.
Gorgeous quilt. Re: appraisals.........I recently had a friend who had a queen sized new batik quilt appraised. It was well done, visually appealing and machine quilted with an edge-to-edge. It was a pieced star pattern, can't tell you the name of the block as I didn't see it that long, but the appraisal was $2600/replacement value. It has been repeated on this board frequently, but we quilters need to value our work more than we do!!! So glad this beauty was rescued by someone who recognized the skill and work that this dear lady did and will treasure it beyond her lifetime!

I have that exact quilt I've worked on off and on since the seventies. It's about a quarter quilted. I really should finish it.
Wow! yes you have to have that one appraised. Look up ACS approved quilt appraisers. Then make sure to share in your local quilt shows so that others can see what a beauty that is.

I have asked the man who bought it at auction for the information and he hasn't gotten back to me on it. All I know is it came from the east coast in the upper states. I will keep bugging him until he lets me know. I agree she should have credit. I also know when someone is as old as she is sometimes there aren't any relatives left to care.
As it stands, I haven't a clue. |
Awesome! What a treasure you happened across.
