My tube quilt "Jewels in the Garden"

This was my first attempt at a tube quilt. I must say it'll probably be my last. I wasn't crazy about the method. Maybe if I would've liked the fabric better I may have enjoyed the process more, not sure about that.
I made this for some friends of ours who did such a kindness for us in October when a very dear friend died that we just felt it should be recognized by making them a throw for their living room- just the right size for snuggling under to watch TV. Never having been to their home I asked them colors in their LR. She said black Victorian style couches with flowers in jewel tones. Green carpet and grape colored lamp shades. Well, that was kind of a hard combo for me to wrap my brain around as I am more into fall colors. But, I went on a search and came up with this. I'm hoping amethyst and citrine will be jewel-toned enough. haha! I used a stencil to make the pinwheel flower in the center, then I fmq'd a vine around each pinwheel, all on my home machine. I did each square separately so when you look at the back it shows a kind of a gridwork. I like the back almost better than the front. :-)
One great thing is- she's a bling bling type person, so the brightness will appeal to her. AND she can't even sew on a button so she will LOVE the fact that it is handmade for her. I washed and dried it so it's already soft and scrunched up- ready for use. She has many other talents, but sewing isn't one of them.
I have to admit, I do love the label. I traced a graphic off of MSWord and made my own with hand embroidery.

Beautiful quilt. I especially love the label you created! Your friends are going to love it.

jansquiltn 12-05-2011 08:23 AM

I think that it turned out great. What didn't you like about the process?

cuppi duke 12-05-2011 08:28 AM

Very pretty. I am not crazy about the process of tube quilting either but you did a great job.

I'm still on the fence about tube quilting and completley understand your thoughts about the process. I equally would have had a tough time with the colors your friend described. But you made a beautiful quilt !!!! My hats off to you for completing this challenge.

I'm not really sure how to answer it. I've made a few Turning 20, various star blocks, dresden plate, depression block, square in a square, and I've enjoyed those processes, but the tube quilting where you sew it as a tube then cut it open and then sew those pieces into squares- I don't know exactly why I didn't care for it- I just didn't. haha! I know- wacky, huh!? I think I could enjoy making a table topper out of it, but just not another whole quilt. But, some people really seem to enjoy it- so don't let me discourage them! :-)

Love it! They will too.

Love it! The black sashing really makes it pop.

You have made a beautiful quilt for your friend!! Love the purple.

TanyaL 12-05-2011 10:29 AM

When you see the quilt in your friend's room let us know how it went with her color scheme. I am particularly interested in how your light color fit in as I have a similar problem coming up and am debating on whether or not to include a light color or to have only dark and medium jewel tones. I think your quilt is quite nice and I certainly hope your friend enjoys it and uses it. I think it is a lovely gesture of friendship and you are very thoughtful and kind to make it.

suebee 12-05-2011 10:47 AM

Thanks for the praise on the label! I really enjoy doing them this way. I have done them on the computer with printing on fabric, but I'm always afraid they won't last, so this is the 2nd one like this I've done. I do like the personal touch.

I tried using a dark green and a medium burgundy with the floral, but it was too blah, even though both of those colors are in the floral and at the store they looked fine together, but in this square it just needed something to make it pop, so I went with the purple and yellow. I do wonder if I am anywhere close to her real colors. haha! Either way, she will love it, though, I am sure.

it looks simply gorgeous! I like the backer too. I think the color choices are good (unlike the first trial ;-) ). I like the label, it'll now last as long as the quilt. Flowers look like they match perfectly!

I love the colors.

JanTx 12-05-2011 01:25 PM

Last January I made 3 or so table toppers with this method and was amazed by it - each topper had either 3 or 4 blocks. I can't imagine doing a whole quilt with it. Now I have to find a tutorial to see how to do it again as there are more toppers I'd like to make using this method.

Beautiul quilt - great label! Don't you just love having something like this to express your thanks? What do poor non-quilters do????

Blue's quilting mama 12-05-2011 01:32 PM

Your quilt fits the LR description and is beautiful. Nice work on the quilting and label as well. I am sure this quilt will be loved. I have made 3 tube quilts and each one looks so different. Try another one with different colors and be amazed.

Very pretty quilt

QM 12-05-2011 06:31 PM

I will admit that i was less than enthusiastic about the process when I first was told about it, but now I love it. You did a good job. I think you would have liked it better if you had gotten some of the secondary patterns going by leaving out the sashing. My first was a baby quilt with some rather blah fabrics I was given, but my second was with some high end Japanese prints. As you surmised, the fabric does make a big diffference.

catladyquilts 12-06-2011 04:34 AM

love the colors, it came out great

rubyred 12-06-2011 04:48 AM
