I started a Carpenter's Star and am stuck as how to add at least 12" all around - for son's 2nd anniversary.

You could easily add borders. First a small 2" white, then 3" yellow, 4" orange, last 5" green. Would keep the focus on all the piecing you have done.

How about a border of yellow and of orange, same as in your main part?
