Bought it at a yard sale from a women who said her grandmother made it. She guessed she made it in the 30's or 40's. Price: $2. Score! :D

beautiful!

scowlkat 08-06-2011 03:16 PM

Awesome! Can't believe people sell things made by relatives like this! I would love to have one of my grandma's quilts.

magpiefeather 08-06-2011 03:16 PM

Wow...it looks like feedsack prints...nice score!

bjeriann 08-06-2011 03:16 PM

What a great find. I don't understand how someone can sell something like that. Her Grandmother's hard work is only worth $2.00. How sad. Hope you will give this quilt a loving home that it deserves. This just makes me so sad.

I absolutely will! I agree, there's no way I'd ever sell any of the quilts my mother has given me. I'm a 4th generation quilter and I absolutely love the vintage-style quilts, I only wish I had some of the quilts my grandmother and great-grandmother made. You can guarantee this quilt will never leave my home as long as I'm alive. :)

I agree! It is very sad  but good too because it is where it is appreciated!

Me too! I don't get it... But at least it's going to be appreciated now!

Mariposa 08-06-2011 03:26 PM

Wonderful find. How can people part with quilts they know someone in their family made??? Breaks my heart.

Great find! I love garage sales and antique stores.

Jabear617 08-06-2011 04:50 PM

That is a pretty quilt! I can't see giving away something my Grandmother made.. Her loss and your gain:)

craftybear 08-06-2011 04:52 PM

beautiful and sorry to hear that lady sold one of her grandmothers quilts, are you going to put a label on it so you know who made it and the age of it???

sewgull 08-06-2011 05:02 PM

Pretty quilt. Glad you could save it.

That's a very good suggestion. Unfortunately I never asked her grandmother's name. I'll definitely put a label on it saying where I bought it and how old it was supposed to be. I'm going to patch it then hand wash it tomorrow.

Mickey1 08-06-2011 06:47 PM

So glad you have it!

mimicrystal 08-06-2011 07:02 PM

What an awesome quilt

debcavan 08-06-2011 07:18 PM

I'm glad someone has it who will appreciate it

Maggie_1963 08-06-2011 07:39 PM

Score is right! I'm glad you rescued it, even sometimes when we find old "cutter" quilts that are too far gone to use as a cover, I feel the threads talking to me, and I like to create something out of them to last longer, such as a pillow or decor like wall hangings or stuffed animals, cats, pigs, etc. I am making some stuffed bears for my grandkids out of their Poppy's old baby quilts as they are too tattered to pass on, at least they will have a piece of him to remember him by later.

cathyvv 08-06-2011 07:44 PM

I guess this could happen if you have no one to pass it on to. Otherwise, like you, I don't understand how something as preciouss as this could be sold, let alone sold so cheaply.

Toto's Mom 08-06-2011 07:45 PM

I, too, am sad that the woman would sell her grandmother's work, but delighted that you got it and will cherish it.

It does look to have some feed sack material. You got a real treasure.

Twisted Quilter 08-06-2011 08:32 PM

I talked to an old guy today. After his wife died he told the kids to come get whatever they wanted. Sadly, they only took a few items. When he needed something to cover his table at the flea market he took one of the many quilts his wife had made. As soon as he put it on a table to hold his 'stuff' a lady offered him $100.00! He didn't have a clue.

I asked him if she had any fabric and he said, yes, but it's old!
I'm waiting for him to call me.

You Craftybear stole the words out of my mouth. I agree with that to honor the person who put in her effort. Her name and the year just like Picasso did on his artwork.

Moonglow 08-06-2011 10:39 PM

It's lovely. What a great find!

baskets4moo 08-06-2011 10:53 PM

OMG!! How could anyone sell off their family heritage like that! It just amazes me! Lucky for you to save it & what a price!!

wanda lou 08-07-2011 12:01 AM

a great find, sad someone could sell her grandmothers quilts.

I had a huge collection of family quilts, I could never get rid of them. They will passed on to my grandbabies.

A great find for you! Enjoy

I wish some of these folks would move closer to me....those who don't have a clue or don't care if they sell a treasure for a couple of dollars. I find ugly half rotted pieces of quilts for a lot of money. You are one lucky person!!

bearisgray 08-07-2011 04:23 AM

Maybe she still had several other of her grandmother's quilts?

twinkie 08-07-2011 04:58 AM

I love old quilts. But think I have too many. LOL

Stitcher317 08-07-2011 05:02 AM

What a treasure!

Same here- hope she enjoys the measly 2 bucks you gave her. I REALLY hope the maker of that quilt doesn't find out.
I'm so glad you will treasure it :) People make me mad!!
