My mother had marked quilting lines in the white area of a Giant Dahlia quilt. 30 years later I used them when I quilted it, and they all washed completely out in the first wash (after it was quilted and bound).

Someone spent hours putting that together - awesome find!

I agree with those who suggest using the lines. I'd try to copy the pattern to the whole border and use the design for quilting. If after washing the pencil doesn't come out with various suggestions given here, I'd just leave it, as in the quilting it could appear as a shadow and not be so noticeable. It seems to be what she planned and it would be nice to finish what she planned.

I would not change the fabric and make a new border. The new fabric most likely will not match the weave, weight, or color of the vintage fabric and, for me, that would be more noticeable than pencil marks.

If you have fabric similar in manufacture or can find some, you could use that, or better yet, use the remaining white of the border plus other fabric to design a new border. For example, something with squares the size of the squares that are in the sashing. Since the Dresden flowers are scrappy, a new border could be made of any print, or prints, of your choice.

If you accept the quilt to be smaller, just remove the border and finish the interior.

Your lucky day and what a find! The marks are possibly for quilting lines or to do embroidery. If I were you, I think I would copy the pattern on the other corners and make it match and then hand embroider on those line. Good luck and please share with the QB with your results. OMG, did you ever get a bargain. It's always amazing to me what a quilter and a non-quilter will charge for quilts and quilt tops, but you were lucky to find this lovely quilt. Congratulations.
