Yes that is what I did ( didn't know the fancy name ) added soft fuse on the back and cut them out ;) I just finished this last night so I am posting pictures. The person for whom comissioned it Loved it ;) but I really can't wait to hear how the recipient likes it in PA in the nursing home. I also finished the cardinal I had been working on.. and see a dozen things i would do differently now but I am on to the next project :)

I hand sewed some yellow beads on teh bird seed trays for a little more detail.

thank you Linda ;) I so enjoyed it.

Annya 11-09-2010 02:10 AM

Did you also needle turn the edges so it looks like hand applique of just blanket stitch around each of the birds?
At a closer look, it looks like you machine sewed close to the edge of the birds.

No needle turn.. I used soft fuse.. on the back of the bird fabric then carefully cut them out.. and ironed on and stitched around with my machine and did a little paint stetching on the wings. ;)

kitsykeel 11-10-2010 11:07 PM

Oh I so love your quilt. Have always wanted to do one of these. Did you applique the birds, etc. or did you use an embroidery machine?

annette1952 11-10-2010 11:13 PM

Very pretty!

You should it is SO much fun!!! I used soft fuse under everything and you could use steam a seam 2...NO embroidery machine. Iron SF to your fabric and cut the pictures out. iron onto backing. and sew around.. after reading about thread painting this week I will do the next one with glue..and see how that works. Just get out some fabric and go for it ;) and have fun.. there is NO mistakes. ..while creating ;)

janice4 11-11-2010 07:04 AM

On this last picture you'll notice the blade of grass in the *hole of the birdhouse.. love how that happened ;) the bird seed trays are embellished with some yellow beads.

janice4 11-11-2010 07:04 AM

I also added paint on the leaves .
