I second the suggestion about buying a quilt kit from Connecting Threads. A sampler is also great since you will learn a variety of techniques. Missouri Quilt Co. also has a number of tutorials to help you.

Great start! You can always buy some kits when starting out, but you are probably not really as bad as you think you are at picking fabrics :)
