Oh, I so love this. One of my favorite OBW fabrics ever! I love how it turned out with hexagons! I did it in octagons (cuz I do not like making the hexagons ... love how they look, just can't do them ... they make me crazy!!! I know most people like to make them!) I am posting a pic of mine to show the contrast and what I did with the dragon ... hope you don't mind. Thought people might like to see the differences in the two kinds of blocks! Thanks for sharing. I so wanted to see this fabric in a hex! It is awesome!

k3n 09-01-2011 07:19 AM

Wonderful! The red diagonal through the centre is really striking. I recognised the fabric from the book too - I'm glad you're recommending it to ppl - it really IS straightforward if you go by the book, isn't it? And aren't cats great at 'helping' with the layout of OBW blocks?

Karen K - I was just thinking I'd go and look up your octo one to see the difference so thanks for posting it here. :-D I always loved your dragon one and you may remember that it inspired me to finally make an octo one myself but I'm still a hex girl - the octos are more swirly due to the two extra segments but I think the hexes blend better as they interlock - plus making and placing those setting squares for the octos drove me nuts! Each to their own, I guess. :D

Brynn 09-01-2011 07:23 AM

Wow Karen K! The octos look fantastic, thank you for sharing yours! It's amazing how the same basic pattern can yield such stunning differences; I especially love how you varied the size of your blocks.

If it was me - I would be doing a happy dance. Love the shades of three colors and the block layout you are showing. I would, however, move one of those dark red blocks so that it isn't that close to and in line with the other one. I would probably put one in about the 4th row and 6-7th column.

peacequiltingnana 09-01-2011 07:35 AM

Wow!

paulina 09-01-2011 07:41 AM

That is great fabric. I used it in a quilt for my son a while back. Its really nice quality.

I'm not the biggest OBW fan but yours came our really cool! Love it.

I actually wound up moving it to the bottom, so it transitions much better and doesn't stuck out so much. Thanks for the tip though, I was fighting with it all day.

Another fabulous rendition.

I like the way k3n described the difference between the octs and hexes. I don't mind piecing either. But if I was undecided about which way to go with a particular fabric, that would be a great way to make the choice.

I'm really entranced by all the movement in this one (octs)- all those whirlpools/vortices churning away, while the hexes in the op were much more subdued (because of the blending).

Love them both. Thanks for posting.

That is so cool! I love your results!

dhanke 09-01-2011 08:12 AM

Stunning and sophisticated! I'm not usually drawn to black and red quilts, but yours is outstanding!!

Bonnie P 09-01-2011 08:41 AM

I just separated them by value and color and started throwing them on the ground. If I didn't like where a block was, or if it stood out too much, I moved it around. I took most of the day to decide on this layout; I'd move a block or two, do something else, come back to it, realize it looked awful, and move more things. I really like OBW's that have a pillar of color in them, and since the red was so vibrant in this fabric I thought it would be a perfect fit for that style. The book is really helpful for deciding how to lay your blocks out, I highly recommend it.

thanks

tazzyMae 09-01-2011 10:32 AM

MarilynLouise 09-01-2011 10:34 AM

Your quilt will be beautiful. Nice arrangement of the blocks.

madamekelly 09-01-2011 11:07 AM

Your quilt reminded me of something I saw once on an old map. In the areas that were still unknown to the map makers of the day, were printed these words "Here there be Dragons". I guess they thought if they did not know what was there, it must be where dragons live. It would be a great name for your quilt "Here There Be Dragons" IMHO

kwiltkrazy 09-01-2011 11:42 AM

Beautiful quilt. I can't believe how many different color ways that material came in. Great choice of starter fabric. you did a wonderful job.

pjnesler 09-01-2011 01:05 PM

nstitchs 09-01-2011 01:15 PM

ube quilting 09-01-2011 01:16 PM

Dragons for the backing?

mimee4 09-01-2011 01:34 PM

Dramatic. Wonderful choice of fabric and pattern.

Iluv2quilt 09-01-2011 02:02 PM

Really nice, I'm working on my second one right now. Yours in gorgeous!

mom-6 09-01-2011 02:11 PM

Love how that came out! Your arrangement is superb!

You did say you still have a piece with the dragon intact? That would be even more awesome to puffy applique the dragon over the border so the red section becomes his flames...And I'm one who does not 'do applique'.

angelwingz 09-01-2011 02:13 PM

Stunning... I love it!

ShabbyTabby 09-01-2011 02:56 PM

I have this very same fabric. My Granddaughter made a quilt for her bed in black and white and we used this as the backing and made pillowcases with it also....her room is all asian themed and this material is just perfect with her room.

gramquilter2 09-01-2011 03:23 PM

The fabric you used for your OBW is super and it will really make a beautiful quilt when finished.
