Saw the pattern and fell in love. Strange that as I typically don't like "scappy" nor am I a big fan of traditional blocks. But the 2000+ pieces sang to me. I selected 24 bright colors and 3 different white on white fabrics.

Finally done with stage 1 - 110 double nine patch. The 9 patch are made with 1" strips. Whew!! I started this over Thanksgiving weekend. I know a lot of you would have finished this task a long time ago, but I'm A) slow and B) don't quilt very often (usually just on weekends).

Pictured are a few of the blocks and the tray that I was working from to select the bits. The additional color/white/color strips will be used in the next stage - Shoo Fly blocks (110 of those). The white/color/white strips ... scrap :(

Ditter43 02-06-2011 07:59 AM

I applaud your skill working with these small strips. I know the smaller the strip, the more accurate you must be!!
I love what you have done so far!!! :D

I love that quilt! Funny, I didn't read all of what you wrote, just clicked on the link, and the first thing I thought of was "London Tube Map!!" I love the London Tube. Mind the Gap!!

Looks great! How are you finding working with the small pieces? I just got the pattern, and will be doing it with black instead of white. I have a quilt to quilt, and a top to finish and quilt before I can move on to this one.

DogHouseMom 02-06-2011 08:02 AM

OMG ... I completely forgot to mention. I had help on this from YOU GUYS. Was reading threads about the benefits of starch. I had never used starch in quilting before. Started it mid-way through the DNP's and wow - helped me keep the blocks straight and flat, and the stiffness of the pieces helped me feed them! Thanks all!!

suebee 02-06-2011 08:03 AM

Wow, look at you go. this is going to be awesome.

I thought about using black. I also thought about using all batiks and found the colors easily enough, but couldn't find enough very pale stuff that I liked for the 'white', plus I decided to use "stash". My colors are all white on color, tone on tone, except for one yellow that has teeny flowers in all the other colors so I couldn't resist.

Can't wait to see the black!!

At first the small pieces were difficult to manage, especially the first two rows (of both the color strips and the DNP). Then I "discovered" starch and things went much smoother! So much so that I bought a gallon of MaryEllens (which I dilute!).

susie0808 02-06-2011 10:50 AM

Let's see, one inch strips equal half inch finished squares. You are very ambitious. Your colors and your execution look wonderful. Your organization and cleanliness are admirable. Using that tray is brilliant. You are making a quilt that each of us will love to see as it progresses.

Frankie 02-06-2011 05:56 PM

I love it so far. How big is it going to be when finished? 2000 + pieces should be a fair size. Love the bright colors.

fleurdelisquilts.com 02-06-2011 06:00 PM

Beautiful, yes! 2000+ pieces?????

Don't toss those scraps....they are too pretty!

you know ... mine might be that many pieces too. I *thought* I recalled 2000+ pieces, but I just did a quick calculation of the double nine patch alone - 9 x 5 + 4 = 49 x 110 blocks = 4950. Then there are the shoo fly blocks and off hand I don't know how many pieces, but there are 111 blocks. So yeah, I'm up there in the 9000 range.

midwestqltr 02-07-2011 10:15 AM

Wow! Sing that song, girl!

suzette1954 02-07-2011 10:28 AM

This is going to be an awesome quilt. I can't wait to see the finished project, I just LOVE scrappy.

Floralfab 02-07-2011 01:49 PM

I have one I made like that a few winters ago. It was a great way to pass the winter. Just found the blocks the other day and am going to make sure I get it put together and quilted. Love your colors. I seem to find a lot of projects I forgot I had. Never know what I will find when I open up a box. Just like Christmas.

Taughtby Grandma 02-07-2011 02:38 PM

With all those little bitty squares, no wonder it's taken so long. It will really be pretty when you finish it. You'll probably just want to look at it for a long time.
