Gosh, picking out the fabrics for a quilt is usually my favorite part, but this task has been daunting! BUT this is how it's going to go...no more changes.

I have over half the strips cut, then discovered one batik was short--35" rather than 40-42". I didn't want that to cause troubles later, so I took about seven fabrics to a Mennonite shop this morning and found three more that had possibilities... I used two here.

I did cut one fabric the opposite direction--NOT selvege to selvege because of the print. I'll be careful--and batiks don't seem to stretch the way normal kinds of cottons do.

I still have a lot of cutting to do... but some day I'll be back with some photos of this done!

Brilliant colors

Tink74 12-30-2010 10:51 AM

What a beautiful start :-)

craftyone27 12-30-2010 10:53 AM

These are not normally my colors (oranges/rust) but I really love them in this combination! I think this is going to be an absolutely stunning quilt! Best of luck on this project! I am nowhere near brave enough to attempt a bargello.

barnbum 12-30-2010 10:55 AM

Thanks. It was so funny (well, funny now, frustrating at the time) every time I looked at the fabrics through the camera I'd see something that stopped the flow, so more changes were made. Then out came the camera again...and one more adjustment was made--and then it flowed for me. Good enough!!!

I don't know, Chris, I may regret this.

I love your quote about dancing in the rain! Also like the quilt inspector in your avatar pic! From the looks of your fabrics your project will be great! I'm sure someone here can help you along the way if you need it!

Me too! I'd really like to hand the pile of fabrics over to a Bargello expert and let them do magic... I'm too tired.

Ladyjanedoe 12-30-2010 11:27 AM

I made a bargello using similar colors and it was very pretty. I sent it to a good friend in Ohio or I'd snap a picture. You're gonna love your finished quilt.

katier825 12-30-2010 11:29 AM

salmonsweet 12-30-2010 11:31 AM

Ooh nice. :D Loving your fabric choices.

I'm mulling over a possible batik bargello for my dad, so I'l be watching for more pics especially eagerly...

deema 12-30-2010 11:32 AM

KarenR 12-30-2010 11:34 AM

Nice colors.

Tink's Mom 12-30-2010 11:50 AM

Thank you for reminding me to look thru the camera for interviewing colors...I keep forgetting this.
The colors look great, Karla...you are being just like I was with Mom's jacket. I was afraid that certain colors were standing out too much.
(btw...give some love to those special horses and of course to the pup) Susie

Iluv2quilt 12-30-2010 11:55 AM

Gorgeous fabric! It will make a beautiful Bargello, which is on my to do list in 2011. Can't wait to see yours!

feline fanatic 12-30-2010 12:39 PM

I love your fabric choices. I can't wait to see how this progresses. I have to go back and look to see which Bargello pattern you chose.

I'm not sure there's a tip--it just happened. I'd be so excited to take a picture of the final choices, but when I looked at the screen I could see things I wasn't happy with. I know when I lay out ragged flannel squares for a "random" design, I always take a picture to see where I need changes. This works with log cabins too. It's just one of those things... I can't explain it.

This has never happened before: after playing with the three new fabrics and making the final choices, I wanted to wash the three new ones--and I saw four new ones. One I must have taken from my stash. For the life of me I could not remember which three I bought today! So, I chose the three I was pretty sure about, and got them washed, dried and folded. But my daughter, who was with me, just said one I didn't wash was one I bought today. So--it's in the dryer now. Good grief! :|

There are a few in there that are not batiks.

LeeAnn 12-30-2010 01:09 PM

Beautiful! I can't wait to see your quilt.

winter012 12-30-2010 01:19 PM

Absolutely gorgeous fabrics!! Beautiful batiks! Not my color palate either (I tend towards blues & greens), but your choices are out of this world!!!!!

Maggie_Sue 12-30-2010 01:23 PM

Waiting to see this progress, I'll bet this will be breath taking!!

kreinhart742 12-30-2010 05:21 PM

Those colors are great can't wait to see the finished project, love those batiks

lovingmama 12-30-2010 07:49 PM

What a great selection, I will be doing a bargello in the new year, you can choose the fabric for me! :-P

Jan T 12-30-2010 08:47 PM

It doesn't get any better than earthy batiks. Just think how warm and happy you will be working on it.

trisha 12-30-2010 08:57 PM

Going to be a real beauty!!!

indycatcarol 12-30-2010 09:17 PM

What pattern are you going to use? I just picked up Twisted Bargello by Chris Timmins pattern at the quilt store. I'm wondering if I should do something easier, like just a wave, for my first bargello.

Mariposa 12-30-2010 09:23 PM

You're off to a great start! :)

Celeste 12-30-2010 09:58 PM

They're gorgeous Karla! I'm confident you'll do great just like you do on anything you choose to do!

zelda2 12-31-2010 03:06 AM

That's the one I'm doing! :-D I seriously considered an easier pattern, but then decided on a wall hanging first--that should make me pull less hair out--right???? Right???

Hopefully I'll finish cutting strips today. Hubby and I are going out for lunch to celebrate our 12/22 26th anniversary...and the tree comes down today, but I can squeeze in some time. ;)
