Another fabulous OBW from you. Can't wait to see the ones you have waiting to be quilted. Awesome fabric; you have a great eye for fabrics to use in OBWs.

Rachelcb80 03-09-2010 02:45 PM

Another beauty! I love how you put a couple blocks into the border. Very, very pretty! From what I can see of your quilting (just in the border), it looks really good!

shopbelt 03-09-2010 03:02 PM

How do you do this?! I have got to learn this trick!

QuiltingB 03-09-2010 09:22 PM

How stunning! Was it difficult? I think you may have another OBW newbie nibbling at the bait.

Fabriholic 03-10-2010 12:08 AM

WOW ... it's amazing. I love it! DI

Ah ha! So I have to hook you and reel you in!

I don't think it's that difficult, once you get the hang of the stacking and cutting. There's a bit of organisation involved in keeping your blocks together but the sewing is straightforward - no Y seams. The toughest parts I think are choosing a good fabric and getting the layout to work (the design part if you like) but there are techniques to help you with that. The book One Block Wonders by Maxine Rosenthal is what you need. When I first started doing these I read it through cover to cover then used it as an instruction manual as I made the first couple. I found it very clear and easy to follow - lots of photos. Plus check out the Virtual Section here on the board - there's a link bottom left highlighted in blue. Some ppl have been making these in a sew along, guided by Cutebuns. :-D

Hi som, if you're sure you cut accurately, it sounds like your angles are wrong. You have to cut equilateral, 60° triangles, that way 6 of them put together will total 360°. Hang on, I'll post a pic of my ruler...

BTW this is my old triangle with the tips cut off (not ideal!) I now have a new one with the tips but the angles are the same. Anyone who is buying one, get one with tips, the tips are important when making these as they help you line everything up! :-D

Here's my triangle with my 6.5" square laying alongside it.

It is quilted Ditter! Very subtley obviously! I just meandered over the main body, SITD round both edges of the skinny border and then did a half hooked feather in the border to represent flames - there's a close up of the border a couple of pages back. :-D

If you don't want to buy a triangle ruler, you can just use one that has a 60 degree angles on it. Mine is an Omnigrid 6" X 24". Once your strips are stacked, pinned together, you just start at one end position the ruler on the fabric lining up one of the cut edges with the 60 degree line and cut on the outer edge of the ruler. Flip the ruler so you're using the other 60 degree line and cut the other side of the triangle. Repeat these actions all the way across your strip set. Make sure to move pins, so you don't accidentally try to cut thru one. Before you know it you will have cut the whole strip and will be ready to start sewing them together. Don't sew all together tho, just make half hexagons.

Hi Linda - I assume you have the 60° triangle as recommended in the book(s) by Maxine Rosenthal? Have you checked out the photos showing how to place the triangle on the strip? I use her technique of making my right hand cut, then butting a square ruler up against the left side of the triangle, taking the triangle away then making the second cut. If you're using the 60° line on your ruler, I think you have to turn the ruler to make each cut, this too is explained, with photos in the book. :-D

You should be making 60 degree cuts in order to have an equalateral triangle.

linda55 05-17-2010 03:40 PM

 i do not have that book. i learned this tecq. at a retreat. so is hope you can helpppppppppp.

linda55 05-17-2010 03:42 PM

 i think it might be a 60 and not 30 . i just forgot. i cut my 6 fabrics had them pinned then cut 3 3/4. i just forgot how to lay the ruler to cut the triangles. hope you can helpppp.

You make such beautiful quilts! This is something that I'd like to tackle, just looking for that special fabric to use!!

plainpat 08-08-2010 02:48 AM

I did see where you use a MM ruler....does it matter what size you buy
to make the OBW ? They have 2...small & large. Not sure what you mean about buying a ruler with a tip? I'm getting stuff together to start, but don't want to get the wrong ruler. Now I see you like the Clearview ruler best? Sorry to be a pest !

Hang on, I'll post a pic of my ruler...

BTW this is my old triangle with the tips cut off (not ideal!) I now have a new one with the tips but the angles are the same. Anyone who is buying one, get one with tips, the tips are important when making these as they help you line everything up!

A OBW made from two fabrics with the same prints, but one is twice the size of the other. Yup, it's on the home stretch. Just have to layer and fmq it, get a hanger sleeve on and a label. This one's for my brother and sister-in-law who live in New Mexico. Their living room wall is much the same color as the brick red in the flowers. I included pieces of both original fabrics on the front of this quilt, with brick red piping and dark green solid borders. I'll get a picture up here when it's all finished.
