Opinion: Thick or thin border?

I'm still working on my husband's memory quilt and can't decide if the outer border should be 1.5 inches (same width as the lattice and diamond border) or 3.0 inches (twice the lattice and diamond border). Any opinions?

I like the look of the wider border. Your quilt is very nice.

ranger 05-14-2013 11:07 AM

like the wider border.
Nice quilt.
I like the 'button' squares...are they parts of his clothes?
Where did you get the fabric that has the words...or is it embroidery....or sections of tops?

The button and pocket squares are from my husband's shirts. (He died last year.)
The squares with words I designed and had printed by Spoonflower (www.spoonflower.com). When I tested printing on fabric, that the ink washed out too much. For those squares, I took pictures of my husband's shirts and use the picture as background.

If I needed the extra fabric for size I would go with the wider border. If not, I would go with the first picture and then red binding. Or if I wanted to do a fancy feathered quilted design on the large blue border I would go with that OR.....yep no help at all am I?:D

both look great. maybe go a little bigger than the thinner border to square the quilt if you have to.

DebraK 05-14-2013 11:18 AM

lol, you think like i do ;-)

Nanny's dollface 05-14-2013 11:39 AM

I think the wider border balances the quilt blocks. You have made a beautiful quilt.

The wider border gives you more quilting options. I like it - nice job.

Leslie333 05-14-2013 12:15 PM

Nice quilt. I like the wider border. I think it makes the diamond border "pop" more.

BDawn 05-14-2013 12:18 PM

Wonderful idea, it is so lovely. I like the wider border.

bjchad 05-14-2013 01:06 PM

I like the thinner one myself. The other one makes the diamonds look off sides.

SavedByGrace 05-14-2013 01:12 PM

I like the narrow border.

QuiltnNan 05-14-2013 01:24 PM

i like the first one

Beginner10 05-14-2013 01:27 PM

I haven't made that many quilts but my vote is for the 1st one also.

Lori S 05-14-2013 01:28 PM

I vote for the wide border.

cindy4857 05-14-2013 01:53 PM

wide border in my opinion. Great quilt. Love the colors. Calm and soothing, yet great pop to make it interesting. Great Job!

barny 05-14-2013 01:59 PM

I also like the wider border. I really like your quilt in memory of your husband. Very nice.

For a while I thought I was the only one who liked the thinner border. :)

Thanks for the info.
Checked out the Spoonflower link. When I have more time, I am going to have a closer look at that site. Looks interesting.

My condolences on the loss of your husband.

Thanks again.

hi the second one the wider

mom-6 05-14-2013 04:13 PM

Ok I'm going to suggest a third option - making it half way between the two widths.
Unless you are going to do very special quilting in the border, the wide one seems too wide. But the first one doesn't seen quite right either, hence my suggestion of in between the two widths.

FranW 05-14-2013 04:33 PM

The quilt is beautiful either way so I am of no help with your border. I am sorry for your loss.

DebbE 05-14-2013 06:01 PM

Wider looks much better to me -- it balances out the size of the blocks better. Lovely quilt!

Jan in VA 05-14-2013 08:29 PM

Wider is aesthetically more pleasing. :)

Wider for sure. Great job!

frenchfryqueen 05-15-2013 04:16 AM

I vote thinner. I think it puts more focus on the blocks. Also, what a wonderful tribute. So sorry for your loss.

grammysharon 05-15-2013 06:49 AM

I agree, wide border with red binding!!!!

Emma S 05-16-2013 06:11 AM

What a wonderful quilt! I like the narrower border. To my eye, it makes the red squares more striking.

TnBecky 05-16-2013 06:31 AM

My vote is the 1.5" border, but with either one this is a beautiful quilt.

cpcarolyn 05-16-2013 06:32 AM

Nice quilt.

tessagin 05-16-2013 06:42 AM

I would have to flip a coin and then probably still wouldn't be able to decide.

#1piecemaker 05-16-2013 06:44 AM

I like the wider one!!! Your quilt is awesome! Great colors and great job!

Sandi 05-16-2013 08:21 AM

I like the wider one - it helps to make the squares show up more.

Friday1961 05-16-2013 08:43 AM

Wider! It's beautiful, by the way; love your prints and the way you've put them together!
