One of my favorite quilts is the New York Beauty. I've never tried paper piecing so figured that's one I'll never make. Found a pattern at a quilt expo for this small table topper so I decided to teach myself the technique. I still don't think I'll ever make a New York Beauty!

Pattern: Flower Garland Table Topper by Rebecca Ruth Designs; fabric from stash.

Thanks for looking.

Wow, if this is your first attempt no telling what you will be able to do.
Absolutely beautiful piece that would look great on my table as I am a rose lover.

Very nice. And very impressive for a first attempt!

sarahrachel 09-07-2011 09:25 AM

very pretty!!! my first paper piecing was a wall hanging that I hand pieced. I figured it would be easy to sew a straight line. From now on, any and all paper piecing is done by machine!

QuiltnNan 09-07-2011 09:31 AM

Your table topper is really nice, a very good job. I'm sure your could do the NYB, no problem. You could always do a table runner for starters. Thanks for sharing.

kriscraft99 09-07-2011 10:22 AM

it is gorgeous! I haven't tried paper piecing, I really want to... how difficult was it?

Thank you everyone-you're all so sweet. The pattern isn't difficult. I have problems with spatial relations-I can't figure out where to put the fabric (backwards) so it covers the area when you flip it over. It took me 2 days of "oh sh**" before I had an "aha!!" moment and it clicked. After that, it went smoothly. You all do beautiful work and would probably finish this pattern in an afternoon.
Thank you again for the compliments.

TrenbeathRanch 09-07-2011 06:50 PM

Excellent job!

SandyinZ4 09-07-2011 06:53 PM

I think you did wonderfully well for your first try and we all had those OS moments until it clicked. I think your colors are gorgeous. Makes me think I need to do more of it- (PP)just have to find more hours in the day.

Jan, you did a great job, the octagon shape is really a good way to show it off, don't give up on new york beauty blocks, you have a good start with your roses very pretty.....

dphelps 09-08-2011 08:46 AM

Beautiful!

GV09 09-08-2011 10:40 AM

WOW! It's so beautiful! I will take a short course to learn this month to block "New York Beauty".
I love it!
Congratulations to you and thank you very much for sharing your roses! A big hug!

Janquiltz 09-08-2011 01:47 PM

A paper-pieced New York Beauty is easier than you think. I am working on one in batiks and trying to do it scrappy - each block I make seems prettier than the one before. What fun to finish each block and see the result! Really do like your table topper - Pretty roses and looks like a challenging project for your first attempt. Well done.
