Kudos to you for working with young people. Just think, you may have created a real fabric artist. Someday one of them may come show how well they have done with quilting. Great job. Love your pics of the kids in class

Thank you for teaching them sewing of any kind. Not at home for next few months but live north few hrs away so will send a donation in May if that's OK.
You need to show them their pics on our forum to make them feel like movie stars.

One of the classes I taught for about 3 years at a small private school made a variety of items for charity. We called the calss "Service Projects." It was an elective. The last year I taught the class my students (three girls -- one was there only one day each week) made 200 small quilts that were donated to pregnancy centers, nursing homes, etc. No, I didn't make a typo. They really did make 200 quilts!!! They set themselves a goal of 200 for the year. They simply cut out two panels of fabric, sandwiched them together, stitched around the edges leaving an opening, and then turned them right side out. They would spend one or two days simply cutting out the quilts. They had quite the little assembly line going! Lots of babies, toddlers and seniors received those quilts, and I'm sure they really appreciated them. The girls felt so honored to be able to make them.

Wow!...200..I have to speed things up this year so I am going to make kits and make bigger blocks, or just panels for some of them like you said..so we can produce more...and I like the idea of turning inside out because now my sister and I add the bindings, ...we cheat and bind with the excess backing, but it still takes long..I want to eliminate this step ...students will come with us this year when we deliver around Christmas hopefully...
Don't apologize for bringing the backing onto the front for binding. That can be very attractive. Learning to do the corners so they look mitered, is quite the challenge.
This is an awesome project! I know how this can give confidence to students. And those who may not excel at other activities, can do very good work. I volunteered at my elementary school after retirement working with fifth graders. The first and second years, we did red embroidery and the third year, we did crayon design. The embroidery blocks were made into quilts and with the crayon projects we made pillows.
