I've finished the "kid" quilt with the patchwork machine embroidery blocks to which I referred when I asked about FMQ gloves in Oct. 3 post. Below should be pics if I follow the posting instructions correctly. I have closeup pics of the individual patchwork critters, too. Let me know if you want to see them and I'll upload 2 or 3 at a time.

I tried some FMQ on the quilt, but had to take those stitches out because they made the blocks flat and stiff. A child's quilt should be soft and cuddly and most especially for this child; he is very ill. In lieu of FMQ, I stitched around each of the 25 patchwork designs, right at the embroidery edges and did random machine tacking on the remainder of each block. Now the quilt looks dimpled, like it needs to see a good dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

In the course of quilting, I said many rude things to and about my sewing machine, its manufacturers, designers, engineers, and company sales personnel. In spite of my machine's orneryness, I like the finished quilt and feel confident that little Joshua will like it also.

Thanks for looking! Weezie

Thanks! Joshua is 2 and lives in a different state. I've never met him but we keep in touch with his grandparents, friends for the past 4 decades.

That is so cute. I love the pillow to go with it. I bet he is going to love it.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 10-11-2009 07:04 PM

Great quilt! I like how every other block is outlined in fabric. There must be some properly quilty word for that but I don't know it. :)

Pickles 10-11-2009 07:11 PM

What a cute and cuddle Quilt, it is so cute, love the matching Pillow
He will adore it I bet, and it was so sweet of you to do it for that little guy. :)

Sheila Elaine 10-11-2009 07:22 PM

That's a lot of work doing all that embroidering, but it's spectacular. You must be a patient person.

dizzy 10-11-2009 07:27 PM

I really like the way you done it an I bet he'll love it.

Thanks! One of the reasons they are done that way is because I had large designs and small ones. The small ones are the "framed" ones. The little fish on the pillow was intended for the quilt originally, but it was way too small but too cute to waste and I had just one small pillow form in my stash, so it was perfect match. I embroidered a colorful dragon also, but I didn't like it when it was finished; it didn't "work" in the quilt.

Thank you.

Nope! What I am is a determined person. I rarely let anything or anyone get the best of me ... and this is NOT always a good thing!

earthwalker 10-11-2009 07:33 PM

Weezie, I think your work is beautiful .... He will love cuddling up with this.

He will love it!! And I cant help but to laugh at the fact you ripped everyone who had anything to do with your machine. I have a tendency to do the same thing if I have to work on my DD Honda or if I have to work on anything inanimate.

Maybe thats why I do not own any electric sewing machines.........

I sent an e-mail to his grandparents this evening telling them about the quilt and asking for info. that I need for the quilt label and info. about his older brother, so I can enclose a gift for him. His grandma called me on the telephone when they got the e-mail. It seems Joshua is allergic to almost everything, both food-stuffs and air-borne, so he is extremely delicate internally and externally. But what he has is great heart and a happy, loving personality ... in short, a beautiful child. I always cry over any child who is very ill or any who are neglected or abused. I don't begin to understand child neglect or abuse and I thank God for the caregivers who love and tend sick children.

Deecee 10-11-2009 11:23 PM

Weezie, you are one of the caregivers with all the love and work that went into your lovely quilt.

SulaBug 10-12-2009 12:31 AM

Your M.E. quilt, turned out so pretty!! :D
I just love the designs & the colors you
used in making the blocks. It will be quilt
for him to treasure forever!! Great Job.

I think it came out great! We're always so much more critical of our work than the recipients are. Nice job! :)

Quilt4u 10-12-2009 01:34 AM

What an adorable quilt. I love it and so will Joshua. He is going to love cuddling up in it. You are not going to be abble to take it away from him.

Bevanger 10-12-2009 03:55 AM

that is so adoreable. i love the matching pillow. great job!

weezie 10-12-2009 08:06 PM

Thank you all for the kind things you have said. I see many quilt pictures that you share with the rest of us, but shame on me, I do not often send a note to say how much I love the quilt(s) and appreciate the pics. Please know that I really enjoy seeing them even if I don't always say so.

amma 10-12-2009 11:22 PM

Awww he is going to spend hours snuggled in his quilt and looking at all of the incredible embroidered animals!!! The pillow is adorable too!! :D :D :D

Very nice. That's one lucky child. :D

Ducky 10-13-2009 07:04 AM

I love it, Weezie! I think you did a beautiful job! I have done the embroidered Animals in Pajamas and am still needing to piece them in a quilt top. I like the look of yours. And I do know what you're saying about the rude words coming out of your mouth.....I'm guilty, too! I hadn't thought about bringing the manufacturer into it, but I'll remember that for next time!

Joan 10-13-2009 07:07 AM

Too cute and one lucky little boy who is going to admire each
and every animal on it....

I share your feelings for FMQ. I took one class on it and now
have nothing but admiration for those quilters who make it look
so easy. For me, I continue to sitch in the ditch or send it out....

thimblebug6000 10-13-2009 07:46 AM

What a neat quilt! Glad you persevered, he's going to enjoy that quilt & so's his family.

Thank you, Ducky! When I first heard of Joshua's poor health and decided to do a quilt for him, Animals in Pajamas was one of the sets I put on my Wish List as a possible choice for the quilt; another possible choice was the little set of animals all dressed in rain gear and playing in the rain ... I can't remember right off-hand what that set is called. I wanted designs to delight him, hopefully for quite a few years. I finally decided on the patchwork because I had previously bought several of those for no particular reason except that they are so cute.

allisonirons 10-13-2009 04:25 PM

wow that's gorgeous!!! I loooooove the pillow!

The colors are so vivid-he'll love the eye candy! I have a question. Will the embroidery go through the washer & dryer? I was thinking of something for my adult son, but it would get washed & dried a few times a year...at least! Maxine

Hi Maxine. This is only my opinion: I think the designs will hold up as well as any other part of the quilt over time and through repeated washing/drying.

To get the color mix I need, I often use both rayon and polyester threads in a design and cannot tell the difference between them. I read from other machine embroiderers that polyester has more endurance if there is to be a lot of future washing and drying. I wash a quilt in cold water, gentle cycle, just air fluff in the dryer, then hang it on the clothesline that I have strung across one end of my basement laundry room. To give plain sweatshirts a little pizzazz, I have sewn designs on them and I just wash them with the rest of the laundry (warm wash, cold rinse). To save wear and tear on our shirts and pants (and because I hate ironing clothes), I only semi-dry before I put them on hangers to finish drying on the above mentioned clothesline. I've had no problems so far with any designs being laundered.

MaxineB 10-14-2009 06:46 AM

Thanks for the info. I want to do more with my embroidery machine & now I'll try some projects. Thanks again! Maxine

The quilt and pillow are so cute! It doesn't look dimpled, it looks fluffy! I love them both!

Thanks for the compliment. No rude things were said to the quilt. They were said to the sewing machine and sewing machine deserved each and every rude remark!
