I recently spent time organizing my cotton stash and found lots of smaller pieces I didn't know what to do with so I decided to do a 'round the world scrappy. I've never done a scrappy before and I'm not very happy with it. My husband's says it's ugly, nothing matches and not at all like ones I've finished before. I told him it wasn't supposed to match. I didn't like it as it hung on my design wall so I took it down and put it on the bed to play around with matching the blocks. The first picture is as one diamond. The second is multi-diamonds. Believe me the pictures look better than the actual quilt. Please, please, please, any suggestions on how to revive this and keep it from a UFO box? I've already got over 20 hours into this. I joked with my husband that maybe I'd finish it and give it to my son for his birthday - he's a of a scrappy kinda guy.

I think they're both gReat! but, I love a scrap quilt, the scrappier the better, go with either one, add a nice neutral border, tie it, and either keep it for yourself, if you can't exactly look at it, use it in a duvet, that's what I did with my last 'ugly' quilt; give it to your son if you can give it away. I think you did a great job!

I love your second version with the multiple diamonds. Add a small dark inner border and then a larger outside border in a contrasting color. Some quilts which you think are ugly really surprise you after they are quilted. If you really don't like it after that - donate it to some worthy cause, but in my opinion, all quilts are lovely.

I like scrap quilts, and I think your design #2 is a good option. I think a wide navy or black border will give it some masculine appeal.
I really like design #2, scrappy quilts are great!
I like the second one also. Do you look at the fabrics and recall what project you used each of them in? If yes, it can become sort of a memory quilt.
The second one and its a great camping quilt or extra blanket.
What I'm doing with my latest, not in love quilt is putting it in the car. I figure it might come in handy there, sometime. Even if I just use it to throw over purchases in the back to deter break-ins etc. We don't go to the snow often, but it would be nice then, too. Maybe a car quilt for you too?
I like it, maybe sandwich it and quilt it and you may change your mind. It could be that you're just not a "scrappy" person. LOL
#2 I like the best
#2 is freakin rad!
I like design #2 as well!!
You did a great job!!
True meaning of scrappy :D |
i like the second arrangement best and those are not totally ugly! you will either like it when it's done or give it to someone who will.
I think they're both pretty, but like #2 the best.
#2!!! I like it !
Yep, I have to agree, #2 is the best. If you REALLY don't like it, you could send it to me!!! LOL :-)
Turn it into 2 lap quilts and send one to me andone to jljack! LOL! I happen to love the #2 also. I think it is awesome!
I'd have to go along with the rest and say #2. Maybe you just don't have a scrappy eye yet. I love scrappies. I think its great.
 |
To Quilter7x: yes most of this is left overs from other quilts. I also scour the remnant bins for good sized chunks at deep discounts.
To Candance: I like your idea - it may just have to take up residence in my car. Pocoelle: you might be right, I might not be a "scrappy" person but at least I can say I've tried once. Thanks everbody; I feel a little bit better. Even my husband likes #2 better. Funny thing is when I had only six blocks done on the design wall I started out with layout #2 and changed 'cause I didn't think I liked it. Think I'll mark their placement and set it aside for a little while while I ponder its future. I've got lots of other things designing in my mind . . . you know how that goes . . . |

I like the second one best but they are both nice.
The second one is very interesting. I like the way it flows. If you go with this, I am sure that your son will love it.
I also like #2. I have a hard time with scrappy too - I want to control it - therefore I have not made one either.
Seems the second plan gets the vote - mine, too.
Another vote for the second one..I really like the way the colors move your eye around and across...
Much as I like the controlled geometric look of the original Around the World (one of my favorites) the way this one moves is just spectacular, and could never be achieved in the original. |
i love scrappy quilts!! I do like the 2nd photo of the multi diamonds though--maybe hubby would like it better if it had some sort of pattern to it! my hubby is the same way though!! i would keep it and tell him it's a picnic blanket!!HAHa
I like #2 as well.
I like them both. Who cares if nothing matches, isn't the what a scrappy quilt is all about. Good work.
I like #2 a lot! But I would switch the blocks around a little because it seems like there are a lot of gold in the blocks to the left and a lot of pink at the bottom. I'd mix them up so they are truly scrappy, with nothing "matchy" at all. I love scrappy, but if it's not in a "pattern" with matching rows, then I'd like it better really mixed up! But that's just me!
I like the second layout. It's a great scrappy quilt.
Now thats one Beautiful scrapy quilt worthy of finishing,
I do love the #2 |
I think it's going to be nice. I like the #2 option best too!
There's nothing wrong with either although I like design #2 best. Tell DH to be careful or the next thing you scrap might just be him! LOL Once they're quilting they'll look even better and if they're from Mom they'll be well loved.

I like #2 my self. Here is one I did for DGS with sashing. I just love the mismatched scrappy look myself. This is more "organized scrappy" in that I arranged the color of the pieces, but it would work well with yours.

I also like layout #2 best. I LOVE scrappy quilts! Once it gets sewn together I'm sure you'll like it. They always seems to take on a life once the tops are completely done.
GrammyP: your scrappy is most excellent! :D |
I really like #2...it's really pretty!
