I recently spent time organizing my cotton stash and found lots of smaller pieces I didn't know what to do with so I decided to do a 'round the world scrappy. I've never done a scrappy before and I'm not very happy with it. My husband's says it's ugly, nothing matches and not at all like ones I've finished before. I told him it wasn't supposed to match. I didn't like it as it hung on my design wall so I took it down and put it on the bed to play around with matching the blocks. The first picture is as one diamond. The second is multi-diamonds. Believe me the pictures look better than the actual quilt. Please, please, please, any suggestions on how to revive this and keep it from a UFO box? I've already got over 20 hours into this. I joked with my husband that maybe I'd finish it and give it to my son for his birthday - he's a of a scrappy kinda guy.

I think they're both gReat! but, I love a scrap quilt, the scrappier the better, go with either one, add a nice neutral border, tie it, and either keep it for yourself, if you can't exactly look at it, use it in a duvet, that's what I did with my last 'ugly' quilt; give it to your son if you can give it away. I think you did a great job!

redpurselady 03-11-2010 11:49 AM

I love your second version with the multiple diamonds. Add a small dark inner border and then a larger outside border in a contrasting color. Some quilts which you think are ugly really surprise you after they are quilted. If you really don't like it after that - donate it to some worthy cause, but in my opinion, all quilts are lovely.

JenniePenny 03-11-2010 11:49 AM

I like scrap quilts, and I think your design #2 is a good option. I think a wide navy or black border will give it some masculine appeal.

NorBanaquilts 03-11-2010 11:58 AM

I really like design #2, scrappy quilts are great!

Quilter7x 03-11-2010 11:58 AM

I like the second one also. Do you look at the fabrics and recall what project you used each of them in? If yes, it can become sort of a memory quilt.

karielt 03-11-2010 12:04 PM

The second one and its a great camping quilt or extra blanket.

Candace 03-11-2010 12:08 PM

What I'm doing with my latest, not in love quilt is putting it in the car. I figure it might come in handy there, sometime. Even if I just use it to throw over purchases in the back to deter break-ins etc. We don't go to the snow often, but it would be nice then, too. Maybe a car quilt for you too?

pocoellie 03-11-2010 12:17 PM

I like it, maybe sandwich it and quilt it and you may change your mind. It could be that you're just not a "scrappy" person. LOL

reneebobby 03-11-2010 12:23 PM

#2 I like the best

ilovequilts 03-11-2010 12:32 PM

#2 is freakin rad!

Jim's Gem 03-11-2010 12:35 PM

I like design #2 as well!!

Justquilting 03-11-2010 12:37 PM

You did a great job!!
True meaning of scrappy :D

nativetexan 03-11-2010 12:37 PM

i like the second arrangement best and those are not totally ugly! you will either like it when it's done or give it to someone who will.

King's Daughter 03-11-2010 12:38 PM

I think they're both pretty, but like #2 the best.

STAR 03-11-2010 01:00 PM

#2!!! I like it !

jljack 03-11-2010 01:02 PM

Yep, I have to agree, #2 is the best. If you REALLY don't like it, you could send it to me!!! LOL :-)

lfw045 03-11-2010 01:06 PM

Turn it into 2 lap quilts and send one to me andone to jljack! LOL! I happen to love the #2 also. I think it is awesome!

dglvr 03-11-2010 01:09 PM

I'd have to go along with the rest and say #2. Maybe you just don't have a scrappy eye yet. I love scrappies. I think its great.

Quilter2B 03-11-2010 02:11 PM

To Quilter7x: yes most of this is left overs from other quilts. I also scour the remnant bins for good sized chunks at deep discounts.

To Candance: I like your idea - it may just have to take up residence in my car.

Pocoelle: you might be right, I might not be a "scrappy" person but at least I can say I've tried once.

Thanks everbody; I feel a little bit better. Even my husband likes #2 better. Funny thing is when I had only six blocks done on the design wall I started out with layout #2 and changed 'cause I didn't think I liked it. Think I'll mark their placement and set it aside for a little while while I ponder its future. I've got lots of other things designing in my mind . . . you know how that goes . . .

I totaly agree!!! I LOVE it!

QuiltMania 03-11-2010 02:34 PM

I like the second one best but they are both nice.

Boston1954 03-11-2010 02:40 PM

The second one is very interesting. I like the way it flows. If you go with this, I am sure that your son will love it.

beachlady 03-11-2010 02:55 PM

I also like #2. I have a hard time with scrappy too - I want to control it - therefore I have not made one either.

mimee4 03-11-2010 04:26 PM

Seems the second plan gets the vote - mine, too.

mom-6 03-11-2010 05:43 PM

Another vote for the second one..I really like the way the colors move your eye around and across...

Much as I like the controlled geometric look of the original Around the World (one of my favorites) the way this one moves is just spectacular, and could never be achieved in the original.

montanaquilter 03-11-2010 05:47 PM

i love scrappy quilts!! I do like the 2nd photo of the multi diamonds though--maybe hubby would like it better if it had some sort of pattern to it! my hubby is the same way though!! i would keep it and tell him it's a picnic blanket!!HAHa

shopbelt 03-11-2010 06:01 PM

I like #2 as well.

watson's mom 03-11-2010 06:59 PM

I like them both. Who cares if nothing matches, isn't the what a scrappy quilt is all about. Good work.

Pamela Artman 03-11-2010 07:05 PM

I like #2 a lot! But I would switch the blocks around a little because it seems like there are a lot of gold in the blocks to the left and a lot of pink at the bottom. I'd mix them up so they are truly scrappy, with nothing "matchy" at all. I love scrappy, but if it's not in a "pattern" with matching rows, then I'd like it better really mixed up! But that's just me!

littlehud 03-11-2010 08:33 PM

I like the second layout. It's a great scrappy quilt.

Pickles 03-11-2010 09:01 PM

Now thats one Beautiful scrapy quilt worthy of finishing,
I do love the #2

danmar 03-11-2010 09:25 PM

I think it's going to be nice. I like the #2 option best too!

raptureready 03-12-2010 07:07 AM

There's nothing wrong with either although I like design #2 best. Tell DH to be careful or the next thing you scrap might just be him! LOL Once they're quilting they'll look even better and if they're from Mom they'll be well loved.

I like #2 my self. Here is one I did for DGS with sashing. I just love the mismatched scrappy look myself. This is more "organized scrappy" in that I arranged the color of the pieces, but it would work well with yours.

Your quilt is absolutely gorgeous!!!! I wish I could make something that pretty! Great, excellent, terrific job!!!

Dancing Needle 03-12-2010 07:35 AM

I also like layout #2 best. I LOVE scrappy quilts! Once it gets sewn together I'm sure you'll like it. They always seems to take on a life once the tops are completely done.

GrammyP: your scrappy is most excellent! :D

Love2Craft 03-12-2010 07:39 AM

I really like #2...it's really pretty!

you and dear hubby have just looked at it too much. Kind of like the first bite of something is the best and then you get desensitized if you don't drink.
We are looking at these with fresh eyes and you have done a great scrappy look with these. :XD:
Borders those babies up with some solids or solid-reads and somebody is going to enjoy them!:-D

I really like what you did with the sashing; that's the type of border I was considering for mine 'cause I have lots of extra strips. I was really surprised when this came together 'cause I had no plans when piecing the original sets of strips and look at how many came out that match! Thanks for the pic; I love the colors in it.
