This is going to be an ongoing topic where I will post my progress on the postage stamp quilt.
Please leave comments and encouragements hehe I think I am going to need all I can get! I will update the title with the page of the newest picture. I think its going to take me awhile to get everything cut out. I am going a 1 1/2 inch (unfinished) square each a different fabric. My original goal was to only do 4500 and add some borders to make it bigger. With the generosity of member here I think I may meet or surpass that. Here are a few pics of the scraps that have poured in and me cutting them. I want to again thank everyone who has sent scraps or is sending scraps thank you!!! (edited to change a picture I didnt relize I had photographed an envelope, dont want to give anyone someones address by mistake  sorry) Me cutting, I think I will be doing this for a long time :P |
It will go quicker then you think.

I wonder how many rotary cutter blades that you will wear out?? Looks like quite an under taking!!
Good Luck and Best Wishes! I will watch your progress!! |
You are off to a great start :D:D:D
Looks like a fun, but time consuming project!
Are you only cutting one layer of fabric at a time with the template?
It would go much faster if you stacked your fabrics 4-6 thick and cut a small strip and then cut down. It is hard to get an accurate cut going around a tiny template. Just a thought. You do have a lot of work to do!!! |

Do you need anymore scraps, I have some, pm me if you need them I will trade for some from you.
I will watch this thread with much interest. :)

I am so glad you started this thread, it will be fun to watch for our fabrics to appear in a quilt. It must have been fun to get all those squishies!
My hat's off to you :) You have quite a job ahead of you. I too will be watching to see the progress! Happy cutting and sewing :)
I'm watching in wonder!!! Tee hee hee!

A postage stamp was the second bed quilt I made, back in the 1980's, designed in a class with Paula Lederkramer at QBL.
5,620 one-inch squares; I loved that quilt. I had a nightmarish boss at the time and making that quilt saved my sanity. Worn out now, but I've saved to be the batt in a quilt I make for myself someday. |
All I can say is I'm glad it is you and not me. Good luck.
I'm excited to see what your quilt will look like. I also want to make a postage stamp quilt but, will have to wait until after Christmas. I have a lot of quilts to finish before then.
OMG SO EXCITED for you! I may be brave and attempt one myself...I am watching you!!! Thanks for posting :-)
Wow, what an undertaking. My hat is off to you. I will be watching your progress. Good luck.
After cutting block # 2957, I wonder if you will remember if you run across a duplicate fabric?? Will you cut ALL!!?? first and then start putting it together, or will you cut then sew, cut then sew??
I admire your determination and stamina. BTW, stock up on some BenGay while you are at it for your shoulder and arm.... Will be watching. |
Your quilt will be stunning. I saw my first postage stamp quilt last year, and could not believe it. The lady had over 6,000 pieces and she got them from all over the world. Took her 3 years, but it was beautiful. I can't wait to see how your progresses. Please keep us posed!
Only 4500 pieces??? LOL --- careful --- this will turn into an addiction! The quilt in my avatar is made from postage stamp pieces, and there are 6,561 pieces in it, and its the smallest one I've made so far (81x81), and I've just finished one that is 10,000 pieces. Having to cut all the pieces for these projects, I highly recommend the June Tailor Shape Cut ruler; it has slots every half inch so you don't even have to think about it. Cut your strips, pick up the ruler, then cross cut them into squares. I will be watching your posts with interest...good luck!

This is really a fun and time consuming project. I have started one too but don't have near enough fabric to ever finish one of any good size!
can't to see finished project.
All I can say is OH WOW! That is going to be one wonderful quilt!!! Thanks so much for posting so we can watch its birth!
The easiest way I found to do postage stamps is to use the grided fuseable interfacing. I use my small clover craft iron and iron them to each grid on the premarked fusable interfacing, then fold on the lines and sew the seams. Before sewing the other direction, clip the intersection 1/4"--flip the seams--one going one way and the other the opposite direction. You get perfect matching intersections 100% of the time. It takes a little wile to press them on the fusable interfacing, but the results are stunning.

I'm starting a similar project. From a quilt book on charm quilts, it said a tradition was that a woman was to collect 499 "charms" (1.5" squares), each of a different fabric. The 500th could be a duplicate and on the day that she sewed the #500, she would meet her future spouse. I'm not seeking out another spouse, but thought the fokelore was interesting.
Wow this is going to be an amazing quilt-can't wait to see it finished.
Wow! Tiny pieces. I saw a postage stamp quilt in a quilt show once that over 3,000 pieces. But it looked beautiful!
Oh my, what an undertaking, you have my admiration, I will be watching this thread, watching your progress!!!
Wow will you be busy!!
What an undertaking. Pm if you need more scraps.
I would be cookoo! Can't wait to see your progress!
This will be beautiful when done!!!
I still have several 1 1/2" strips leftover from making my step-daughters log cabin. PM me if you would like some. Half the cutting is already done!!! ;) Patti |
Abby, you have inspired me. I have so many pieces laying around in a box that this postage stamp quilt will make a great.. "Git Rid of It" quilt and not feel guilty about tossing it in the trash.
Thanks |
