The quilt was made by my great grandmother, Mary Tennessee Eastman Currey. She was born in Knoxville, TN in 1840. She died in 1921 in Nashville, TN. She served as a nurse during the Civil War in a hospital in Columbus, GA, where her husband was a doctor. This quilt was probably made during the early 1900's. It measures 70"x76". My mother had it quilted in 1975 and gave it to me as a wedding present. The small squares are 1/2". It is hand pieced and quilted.

Is your state having a quilt documentation project? Try a Google search and keep all the info written down along with a picture of the quilt maker for future generations. It is in loving hands.

Wow, what a treasure. During the Civil War, she would have been only a teenager. Imagine the horrible sights and experiences she must have had!! Understandable that women long ago wanted to create some beauty in their everyday lives. You are fortunate to have it and know about it's history.

|
Truly beautiful.
|
does it give you chills thinking of the history and the connection you share w/ previous generations? It does me.
I hope there is a label on the back of the quilt sharing that story. If not, put one on there so that future generations will know the story. Powerpoint is great, but when i think of where technology has come, how do you know if they'll be able to access it in 50 yrs... |
You are one lucky gal. That quilt is marvelous!
