Just the quilt top, but this is a top that didn't want to be sewn, or one that taught me to pay a bit more attention to how I assemble things. It's for a 3 year old grandson for Christmas. The focus fabric is race cars. I didn't realize the checkered rail would strobe quite like it does, but ... it is what it is!

earthwalker 10-24-2010 08:16 PM

It's gorgeous...I have a dress with a similar pattern (not the race cars)...used to have people doing a double-take.

Looks perfect for a little boy!! Your persistence paid off!! :D

trisha 10-24-2010 08:18 PM

That is going to be one happy little boy!!!!

watson's mom 10-24-2010 08:19 PM

This is a great quilt for a little guy. Love the black and white, and I'm sure your grandson does too. It's just perfect. Thanks for sharing.

Leota 10-24-2010 08:23 PM

That's awesome
What did the original b/w look like? That strobe effect is wild...

wolfkitty 10-24-2010 08:23 PM

I love that quilt! Did you make a blue pillow case, too? Nice to have it match the quilt!

He saw some of the rows draped over the dining room chairs. We were sitting at the kitchen table eating and his chair faced the dining/sewing room. "Oooooooo! Do you see THAT?" "You need to keep working on THAT!" "It's okay if you finish your dinner first, Grammy, you really should finish your dinner." Don't you love 'em?

Yes - made the pillowcase, too. Love that pattern - cute and easy, what a deal.

I do think this can be his room for many years. I teach fourth and fifth graders and think boys that age even would be okay with it. My avatar is a monkey quilt I made for another grandson and know that it's time is limited to a year or two. But by then ... that one may have a little brother/sister who likes monkeys!

I chose that checker because I made curtains for his room using a standard checkered fabric and it was so hard to sew it straight! Wanted to avoid that problem. Here are the curtains that will be in the same room as this quilt.

His Halloween costume. I KNOW he'll love it!

It's almost midnight in S. Texas. My husband is even asleep and has not seen my creation. It is SO AWESOME to be able to come here and share! Thank you, thank you!

From this board: got the pattern (Warm Wishes); got encouragement as I rip, rip, ripped; learned to use numbered clothespins to know which row was which; have a plan for making the sandwich on a card table instead of on the floor; knew to starch and starch again; have 3 bobbins filled so don't have to stop and fill - can reload and go; and a million other things!

Great looking quilt. My GS picked out that racecar fabric at HL and wanted a shirt out of it , He could not be talked out of it. So I made him a shirt. He struts around with it and everyone notices him.

JanTx 10-24-2010 09:21 PM

I can just see it! This grandson has several rather wild button up shirts - mostly Hawaiian-style prints.

I'm thinking - for future projects - that if the center stripe had been a solid black the other colors would really have popped.

Sew and learn!

UglyCook 10-24-2010 09:21 PM

I LOVE all the motion!

JanTx 10-24-2010 09:26 PM

This is my third quilt and picking out the fabrics is one of the things I still lack enough knowledge in. My first one was a sampler I made for a beginner quilting class. The teacher picked out the fabrics based on my choice of focus fab. The avatar quilt got taken over by the brown blocks. The ones that fade into the background are the monkey print that I had intended to be the focus of the quilt. It's fine and he loves it, but ... I'm learning. This one, too - but now I'll know it's not strobing - it has motion! :) I know the grandboy will be thrilled.

jridner1 10-24-2010 09:27 PM

looks to me you have won this race!!! beautiful work

Miss Ice 10-24-2010 10:08 PM

What an adorable quilt for a little boy who loves race cars. And I'm glad he said it was ok to finish eating your dinner :)

craftyone27 10-25-2010 02:33 AM

The quilt/pillowcase/curtains all look great!! He will just love it!! I'm sure he will get years of use out of it before he wants granny to make something else! After all, even big boys love race cars! Great job!

AlienQuilter 10-25-2010 02:34 AM

Very cute quilt. Little boys love anything with cars on it! And bright colors.

As for the monkey quilt, be prepared for WWIII if you try to give it away to a younger sibling. We thought our oldest would do that but he refused to give it up even though it was too small for him by the time little brother came along. My DMIL helped him make a baby quilt for little brother. They get attached. So, they wind up with a collection of quilts with wonderful memories that maybe they can save for their children.

mollymct 10-25-2010 03:25 AM

He is going to LOVE that quilt!!

Jim's Gem 10-25-2010 04:35 AM

Thanks for the heads up. My son-in-law wanted a sports theme for the redo with the Big Boy Bed, but my daughter held out for the monkeys. Said he had years and years to have a sports theme, but only a limited time for monkeys!

MamaBear61 10-25-2010 04:50 AM

He is going to love that quilt and I love his pit crew outfit.

Spring 10-25-2010 04:59 AM

Too sweet!

feline fanatic 10-25-2010 06:57 AM

I think you will have a very happy and excited DGS on Christmas morning. Great quilt for any NASCAR fan but will be especially fun for such a young fan who probably goes bonkers for anything race car!

JanTx 10-25-2010 07:38 AM

Yes, it's a warm wishes pattern.

klgreene 10-25-2010 07:56 AM

He is one lucky boy. I love the quilt, pillow case, valance...... it is put together so nicely....Needs to be in Better Homes and Garden.

sewmom 10-25-2010 01:20 PM

I love the quilt-bright and colorful w/lots of motion. the check would look great cut on the bias for the binding. when i made my youngest DGS quilt, i used the 1/4" b/w check in it and used it in the binding. it looked really neat. you did a great job on the quilt and accessories.

nannya54 10-25-2010 01:22 PM

Your grandson will surely enjoy that. What a fantastic job!
