Sail Boat Quilt for GGS to be born 9/12/14

I thought I would share with my friends on this Board, a photo of the progress I have made on the above quilt.

I plan to border each block with a small dark blue fabric.

If I had this to do over again, I believe that the sail boats might have looked better if they were smaller. However, they are appliqued on and smaller is not always easier.

So here it is.

I like it very much! A friend of mine is working on something similar for a great-nephew. Colors and applique look great!

coastienest 08-31-2014 05:36 PM

I love it so far and can't wait to see the finished piece. I have a new grandson too and my daughter is doing his room with a nautical look and adding whales to it. This would fit perfectly. What is the name of this pattern, if you don't mind sharing it! Thanks for the inspiration!

cdmmiracles 08-31-2014 07:03 PM

Did you design your own sailboats? Just wondering because I am thinking about doing a nautical theme for my grandsons beds and I like your sailboats better than most of the ones I've seen.

lfstamper 08-31-2014 07:20 PM

Awe, Congrads on a GGs. The border will make them look bigger.. Suggestion, put some small black birds with stiches in the sky. You know the stiches that look like curved V's ........ Can't wait to see the final product

I have seen a lot of boat quilts but I say this is one of the nicest.

I did design the sail boats. Feel free to copy the design. I looked a "images" of real sail boats and then came up with this design. Thank you for your interest.

I designed this quilt on my own using precut strips that turned out to be 2 3/4 inches wide. I checked "images" to see what real sailboats look like and designed this boat. Feel free to copy this quilt. I would be honored. The squares turned out to be 11 inches.

I think it's perfect just the way it is, even without the block borders.

That is so nice, I am sure mom, dad and baby will love it.

Sail Boat Quilt for GGS to be born 9/12/14 additional info

For those Board members who have shown an interest in this quilt pattern, I am posting a closeup of the sailboat square. I tried to sew all of the pieces doubled and turned for 2 reasons; one this was easier for me and two because you could see the background fabric through the sail pieces. For the water piece that goes over the bottom of the boat, I used lite steam a seam and then just sewed that piece down. I did this with the flag also only I zig zagged around the flag. I tried that on the water but did not like the finished look. I'm sure that there are better ways of appliqueing than the way I did mine so good luck and thank you for your support.

Very cute, and will be loved into toddler years, I'm sure!

PenniF 09-01-2014 07:23 AM

That is an amazing quilt....and the fact that it was all your design makes it so very special. The colors your chose are perfect --- i just LOVE it.....and so will the new baby and his parents i'm sure.

CyndyK 09-01-2014 07:26 AM

This is adorable. Perfect for a little boy!

judy363905 09-01-2014 07:29 AM

Oh I think your sailboat size is the perfect size with the sky and sea. You quilt will be awesome. Good IDE with the blue sashing-- you may like the boat sizes better after you complete that part. Thank you for posting :)

Love the combination of scrappy blocks with your appliqued sailboats. It's a beautiful design. Such a beautiful gift for your new GGS. Thanks for sharing the picture.

paintmejudy 09-01-2014 08:01 AM

Very nice. I like the way it looks without bordering each boat. maybe think about the dark blue for sashing or border for the finishing?
