Scalped and requilted!

I pieced this scrappy top at the beginning of the year, had it about 1/3 of the way quilted and noticed my tension was whacked. I'd used black thread (on black fabric) and I just couldn't see it well enough to frog it, so I ended up scalping it... that was the first time I'd ever resorted to a razor blade!

Then I reloaded it and quilted it, so at long last it's done! This pattern is called "Flower Boxes" by Heather Mulder Peterson.

Lovely quilt, your quilting is beautiful.

Beautiful quilt. I know from experience how devastating it is to unquilt a top - I am doing that right now, fortunately I had only quilted one row of 9 inch stipple when I found the problem. Your quilt was well worth the extra effort.

Beautiful job!
Question: how did you finally quilt it? I have problems seeing the quilting when I'm using matching thread. my stipples start crossing, can't see where the next feather is going to go etc... Any tips would be appreciated.

Well worth scalping!!! I had not heard that term, but got the picture soon as I read your post. Sure is a beauty!

Sounds like a lot of work but it came out lovely. I especially love the way you put it on the fence for the photo.

Thanks everyone! Scalping is where you leave the quilt on the longarm, and lift the top and the batting away from the backing fabric to expose the stitches, then run a razor blade (I use my rotary cutter) lightly against the stitches. Unless you're incredible careful, it often destroys the batting and the backing, but the top is safe. It's a last ditch effort... but if you've ever tried to frog out black thread on black fabric...

Chris Anders 11-11-2012 06:11 PM

You did a great job. Very pretty. Worth re-doing. Turned out so good.

huntannette 11-11-2012 06:22 PM

oh wow.....i love it!!!!

debcavan 11-11-2012 06:40 PM

Have you ever used an eye brow shaper. It is a razor cover that his little slits where the thread can slide in but you don't cut your fabric.

The quilt is beautiful. I especially like the floral border and all the plaids.

jemma 11-11-2012 08:05 PM
