Are there any measurements if I want to make this with smaller pieces? I would like to do 2 to 2.5 inch squares. Sorry if I missed directions for something like that already. I haven't worked with flying geese before so I'm not sure what size I would need to make or the sashing to make this work. Thanks.

Pam H 01-16-2013 07:13 PM

I love yours Chester. I think a red border would be great on it.

Samara in OH 01-16-2013 07:22 PM

I love all the quilts. I came across this thread when the first finished quilt was posted, decided I would make one for my great-great aunt. Love scrappy quilts.

I have added a section to the Quilt Gallery for all the pictures of these completed quilts: CLICK HERE TO GO TO IT

I've attempted to copy all the photos from this thread, and from the original thread where instructions are posted, and I'll keep watching both threads for any posts of newly completed tops. Please send me a PM if I missed one.

There's a sticky post in the Pictures area, that has a link to the Quilt Gallery.

Love all the finished quilts I'm seeing...I am especially drawn to the black/white combinations. They really stand out! I decided to take using scraps literally by using child scraps from the many children's quilts I've been making. Always have 1 1/2" strips, 2 1/2" squares, etc. leftover...well, I decided to put them to good use. It was a bit more work putting the 4-patches & 1 1/2" logs together to make the 4 1/2" blocks, but it used up a good amount of scraps (still have more but that will be another scrap put-together some other time). I only used 4 blocks for this because it will be a child donation quilt. So, just the scraps...a fat eighth of yellow for the stars...less than 1/2 yard of the blue to frame it all (it's so busy that it needed toning down, I thought)...turned out to be about 45" square. This was another fun ride; thanks Judy; & am waiting patiently for the next one!

owlvamp 01-21-2013 07:40 PM

Beautiful! Love the colors. You did a wonderful job!

cat-on-a-mac 01-21-2013 08:22 PM

Vicki, that is really a great adaptation. I love it!

4girlsmimi 01-21-2013 08:27 PM

Great scrappy! I should have gotten in on this one too. Looks great!

Maureen 01-21-2013 08:33 PM

they all look so nice Im sorry I missed the train!

mom-6 01-21-2013 09:51 PM

Maureen you can always go back to the instructions and start whenever you choose. I just went back to the one prior to the one just before this one and worked on it this last week.

whitepine 01-22-2013 08:47 AM

Great variation Vicki. I like how you made focus prints in the centers of the blocks.
All of these quilts are so pretty. Shows how good leftovers can be.

I'm so excited to report I'M FINISHED!!! I posted on the Train thread but its officially here in the FINISHED thread.

Remember I said I was making quilts for all my MIL's 23grandchildren and 6 children: well, Here is number 1 or 29...I think I'll count backwards so I know how many I have left... I'm weird that way I know.

It measures 55"x70". I used 100% Grandma's scraps. Well, I cut 4.5" squares out of her yardage. And yes, the backing/binding is in fuchsia. Sorry it's so bright... It really is bright. HAHA I've got to use it sometime, and it was in her closet, so this one is the winner of the fuchsia award. (I have enough fuchsia for one more quilt.) I did all the quilting on my Viking Topaz30. My first attempt at quilting!!! :D It was really scary, but I practiced on an old pillow case first. I did outline and swirling in the stars, free motion in the 9patches, and a heart/flower/heart on the sashes. It was my second time to do mitered binding. It washed up really nicely. I used two scrap pieces of Hobbs cotton batting that I zigzagged together. I really like it a lot and hope it's received well from one of the Grandchildren.

I have 28 to go and I am so tempted to just make them all in Judy's design. It was so fun and easy. I can make them look different by changing up the sash. I will label all the Grandma Quilts "From Grandma's Closet". All the family knows what is/was in her closet. Until Aunt Sheri cleaned it out...

Thank you Judy, for this great GREAT mystery!

sewsewquilter 01-22-2013 05:28 PM

Vicki, I really, really, really like the way you did your blocks and blue looks great!

Annz 01-22-2013 05:29 PM

I really like them both but especially the king sized one. The colors are very striking. Great job.

sewsewquilter 01-22-2013 05:33 PM

Sherri, from grandma's closet is a great fun thing to do. They are all going to love having a quilt from grandma's closet. I like the fuchsia. :)

whitepine 01-23-2013 08:03 AM

Sheri, You have really inspired me to tackle quilting. I have several tops but have never tried to quilt even though I have taken a FMQ class. This one would be perfect to start on. Also, I absolutely love your idea of making them all in the same design. This pattern has big enough squares that the fabrics really show. Great job.

SheriR 01-23-2013 08:11 AM

Whitepine, another reason to do them all the same (besides ease of cutting everything). Nobody could say "that one is better than mine!" Because some will. I plan on finishing them all, wrapping them in brown paper, and letting them pick randomly from the pile. If some kids aren't around a sibling or parent can pick, or I mail a random one to them. :D I've had too much time to worry/think about this. LoL

I like the quilting also, but I'm a big chicken to do it. I did mine the 'Judy Way' as I'm gonna call it now! LOL the wavy lines instead of 'in the ditch'. The back puckerd some, but oh well, I got it finished and it looks great over the brown loveseat!

Grandma Cindy 01-23-2013 08:05 PM

would it be possible to get the finished sizes of the different quilts with 6,9,12,15,16,20 blocks etc... they are all so beautiful...

cowgirlquilter 01-23-2013 08:44 PM

Oh my goodness these are wonderful!!!!

The "pick randomly" method is what I have done when sending a bunch of xmas presents which are all the same but different. Then I tell them they can trade if they like, but I don't think they do.

Thanks Judy. I am soooo Glad I finished this top!

Samara in OH 01-25-2013 07:37 AM

This was my first train ride. Really liked the finished quilts. Does anyone know when the next train ride is. I came upon this one after it had already started. Don't want to miss the next one.

granny2cc 01-25-2013 08:09 AM

I, also, don't want to miss the next train. Where will I find info posted when they fire up the engines?

Watch the Blocks of the Month and Week forum. That's where this train left the station!

Finallhy finished! I didn't quite get the binding done before having a small surgery on the middle finger of my right hand on Monday. That put a stop to my hand sewing for a little while, but I was finally able to get my fingers bending enough last night to finish the binding. I used a high-loft batting, and did SID around the squares. I remembered that my machine has a tacking stitch that simulates tying a quilt, so I decided to try that in the middle of each block, since the batting is so "poofy". Whatcha think? I'm planning to donate this to the chemo room at our hospital, where my DH goes for cancer treatment.

I believe that the Chemo Room people will just love it!!!

sewsewquilter 01-25-2013 10:03 AM

They are going to love it. I like the tacking stitch in the middle of your blocks, looks good. I also like the way you quilted on the white fabric. Do you mind if I copy you on what you did on the white fabric? It's going to be the end of next month, I think before I start quilting on my.

Lilrain 01-25-2013 10:20 AM

What a great use of scraps. Nice job!
