Scrappy quilts sunny lanes in red and blue finished

2 Attachment(s)
I finished quilting two of my three sunny lanes quilt tops in the last week. The blue one was stitched in the ditch and the red one was FMQ. The red one took about 1/4 of the time to actually quilt than the blue one, but I love the look of the blue one the best, I think.

My daughter said the red one looks more old fashioned because of the quilting. Overall, I'm pleased with them.

Block taken from quilter's cache. http://www.quilterscache.com/S/SunnyLanesBlock.html

When I get more batting (in the next month, probably), I'll finish my yellow top.

I loved how many scraps I was able to use up on these.

I'd encourage any of you who are at a loss for a pattern to do, to spend time at quilterscache.com It is a wonderful source. I often browse here when I'm looking for inspiration.

Your quilts are beautiful!!! Stitch in the ditch really made the white pop on the blue quilt. I like it best :) Wonderful way to use up scraps!!

Amazing. Well done on both, but I like the Blue one best. Sooooo many squares, wow.

You did a great job on both these beautiful quilts!! Very good use of scraps!! I, too, prefer the blue one but they are both great.

They are both Great, but I love the Red one best.

Both quilts are so beautiful! It's a great scrappy pattern--I have it on my list. I loved the yellow one too---I hope I catch your post when you finish it because I want to see it too.

fayza 09-09-2012 11:35 AM

I love your quilts. I have almost started the same sunny lanes block several times. Now I know it will look good in other colors besides yellow.

Since I have so many scraps (still), I thought I'd try it again using purple and orange --2 different quilts-- ...but not yet... It really isn't a difficult block and looks so "cool" when it's done.

AUQuilter 09-09-2012 11:54 AM

Wow, I really like both of them!

dhanke 09-09-2012 12:08 PM

They are both fabulous! I take my hat off to you for making three from the same pattern. Your powers of concentration are much better than mine. Did you work on all three tops at the same time or did you complete one before you on to the next?

irishrose 09-09-2012 12:14 PM

These are great. I like the look of the SITD. I still like the yellow one best - so much so that I made one, but I cheated and used 2 1/2" squares. I'm not ready for 2" yet. I so appreciate you posting the yellow one because my daughter loves the one I made.

javin22 09-09-2012 12:15 PM

alfosa421 09-09-2012 12:25 PM

I love both! I need to start using some scraps too.

When I did the 2" squares, I sewed together 2-2" strips from my scrappy stash, then cut them up into 2" widths so there were in groups of 2, threw them in a bag then pulled them out randomly and sewed them together to make the 16 patch middles. That way they were random and no two the same, but I wasn't sewing individual squares together which would be very tedious.

I ended up making too many 16 patches, so I just kept making them this quilt. By the time I was done with the third, I was kind of tired of it! :) But in truth, how neat it looks made me keep wanting to try it in a different color. The first one I did was yellow.

I really have a lot of scraps and was trying to make a dent in them. In 2011, we finished over 80 charity quilts, and just the finishing of them alone created a ton of scraps, just from the leftover trimmings from the backings. Plus, some people gave me their scraps/very small pieces...

They look great!

Again you manage to make lovely quilts from bits and pieces. I too like the blue quilt, but I wonder if it's because blue is a calming cool color--makes you want to cuddle under and sleep, while the red warm color says stand up and take notice.

You may be right about the colors....Blue is very calming. The yellow top I have is similar to the red in that it says "stand up and be noticed!" Thanks for the compliment about the quilt...I do like making something out of something that others might throw away.
