Sewing After 'sandy'

4 Attachment(s)
Well, 'Sandy' is gone and here is how I kept busy with no power for a week.

The end of the kitchen hols my treadle machine in a nice sunny window. Heated my iron on a kerosene heater and I was good to go!

Camping stove to the right, just perfect for a morning cup of home percolated coffee, homefries and scrambled eggs.

I worked on a practice piece for a big quilt. This is the trial block.

And last the completed samlpe. The finished quilt will be for a shore house in NJ that a friend owns.

I'm very glad to be back on the QB again!
peace

Glad you made it through safe & sound. I'm sure your friend will be especially appreciative. Hope they fared reasonably well at the shore.

sammygirlqt 11-04-2012 02:12 PM

Hurray, good for you to be so prepared and to keep yourself safe. I love that quilt block you have made. Please show us the finished quilt. I love your retro kitchen...very nice home. It still must have felt a bit funny with no radio, TV and those usual things we are so attached to. Glad you have power back on...I just heard on our Canadian news that 400 power guys from Ontario and Quebec will be in NY for 3 weeks to help.

It's wonderful that you were so well prepared and self-sufficient. You were very smart. I love the crab block for your next quilt. Take care if you have to clean up in your area.

Tartan 11-04-2012 02:59 PM

A quilter will find a way to quilt. I always thought the reason they called those irons " sad irons" was because you would cry after using it to iron all day. :D I LOVE that Crab block you have finished.

Rosie the "Ripper" 11-04-2012 02:59 PM

Quilters are very creative people and you proved that - actually, it was ingenious. Good luck returning to normal and speedy recovery. Keep on quilting!

Fuzzykittenbutt 11-04-2012 02:59 PM

hah! i love your sample block...cute little crab! Perfect for a shore house!

Tweety2911 11-04-2012 03:00 PM

Just shows how resourceful we can be when the need arrises. Good that you are safe and sound. Sewing and quilting are wonderful ways to divert our worries and anxieties. I have my Grand Mothers treadle machine and once used it to finish a project when we had a power outage.

We done and I love your crab blocks.

GreatStarter 11-04-2012 03:17 PM

I am so glad you are safe. How was it using one of those old irons? I have thought in same situation as you found yourself I would use mine. Luckily we never lost power.

Your block is wonderful.

Is it easy to use a treadle machine? That is on my wish list of machines to get. (Maybe in 15 years)

ArtsyOne 11-04-2012 03:50 PM

So glad to hear that you are safe. Love your kitchen - it looks so welcoming and homey.

FabricHeaven 11-04-2012 04:42 PM

Wow, a big storm and look at you! Great! You are so prepared. I am a relatively new quilter and would love to see your finished quilt. Your home is so cheerful!

QUILTNMO 11-04-2012 04:42 PM

very nice love the crab blocks

dunster 11-04-2012 05:45 PM

Good for you! It would probably take me the whole week to get proficient on my treadle. But first I guess I would have to move it closer to a window.

Grandma Peg 11-04-2012 05:55 PM

Very pretty block and glad you are safe.

Veronica 11-04-2012 05:59 PM

So glad you have power again.
You are very resourceful to have a treadle and I love your iron.

LoisM 11-04-2012 06:04 PM

Bless your heart! I love your set up.

needles3thread 11-04-2012 06:05 PM

I really like your pitchers in the window. The three sizes of the ball pitchers are great. Do you collect
them?

debcavan 11-04-2012 06:07 PM

I am so glad you are safe. Love the block.

wvdek 11-04-2012 07:10 PM

You go girl! You were prepared and resourceful like we were after our storm - Dreicho. Without power for 11 days! At least it was warm and not cold like it is for those poor folks on east coast.

Another good reason for a treadle. What good lighting. Nice job. Glad you are ok.

postal packin' mama 11-04-2012 08:31 PM

So glad you posted - your treadle by the window is perfect. Just a real feel-good scene. Good for you!

earthwalker 11-04-2012 08:42 PM

Takes more than a massive storm/disaster to keep a good quilter down! Bravo....I like your style (and that great crab block).

Babs194068 11-05-2012 01:56 AM

Glad you made it through safe & sound, sewing and quilting are wonderful ways to divert our worries and anxieties

LindaR 11-05-2012 06:59 AM

love the black & red table/chairs...good block too LOL

wolph33 11-05-2012 07:42 AM

great to be able to keep sewing.glad the storm was not worse in your area.

helenquilt 11-06-2012 04:43 AM

Oh how that iron brings back memories. I still have a flat iron but haven't had any use for it except to hold down my quilt while basting.

calicojoan 11-06-2012 05:01 AM

Wow, you have quite the set up. I can only hope that they get power back to you before the next round of storms hit. Keep yourself safe and keep creating. It's all we can do when things get tough!

Quiltshaker 11-06-2012 05:11 AM

Good for you - being so creative in a bad situation. I feel for you as we were out of power for a week in the June storm, and I learned that we are very spoiled. At least with ours, it was summer. Hope you're warm and doing well. Prayers for all who were affected by terrible Sandy. Hope to see the finished quilt.

mary quite contrary 11-06-2012 05:32 AM

I too am glad you have power again. Just walking into that area would make me smile each day. Window, fabulous red pitchers, and a red table. Thankful you are back online. Blessings from Georgia.

quiltmom04 11-06-2012 05:33 AM

Good for you! I had my treadle all ready, but hadn't thought as far as what to do about an iron!

joym 11-06-2012 05:34 AM

oh boy! where there is a wil, there is a way.....................good for you and thanks for posting

suelovesquilts 11-06-2012 05:34 AM

Wow--you certainly made the best of Superstorm Sandy stand out in my mind! I love the Coleman stove for a hot breakfast! I need to get one of those old irons for times like these!

Rumbols 11-06-2012 05:40 AM

Glad you made it thru safely. Lucky you to have something to do while waiting for the power to come back on. Just goes to show the oldies are still goodies. Great job.

jetmaio 11-06-2012 06:05 AM

How ingenious,

Goes to show you "Where there's a will, there's a way".

Caroline S 11-06-2012 06:16 AM

Welcome back. You are a great example of "where there is a quilter there is a way". I think I may try to find one of those old flat irons. May come in handy sometime.

sunnymom 11-06-2012 07:03 AM

It's so awesome that you are so self sufficient! Love the crab block. Glad you are ok after Sandy! :)

jeanharville 11-06-2012 08:28 AM

I'm glad you're safe and back online. I also love your charming dinning/sewing area. The red goes straight to my heart. We have everything except the iron and I can see I need to do something about that. We don't have huricanes, but we do have storms that occasionally knocks the power out for days. Thanks for showing us how you made the best of a trying situation.

I am with Dunster, needing my treadle closer to a good window. I hadn't really thought about the iron, but have one my ancestors used - its a big deep one that you put coal or wood embers in to keep the iron hot! I think I could manage it somehow, right now it is a door stop and has been for about 75 years. I lived in Alaska in the "bush" in the 70's without electricity, so I have some skills, but we are really spoiled with our conveniences!
