My sewing room is small. Mark says he could never work in there, but I assure him it's cozy. However, it seems I've outgrown it, and I blame the craft sale prep. There's a possibility it has something to do with a love of buying fabrics? Nah.

My daughter said to take her bedroom, but she's only 18 and even if she works away from home summers, she'll still be back for long breaks from school. So, after careful planning, I decided the only option was to swap the small bookshelf for two larger ones. It did the trick!! :D I'm so pleased with the results. And the book shelves were under $30 each at Wal-Mart. I bought two for my classroom this summer.

There's one small window that faces south, but I keep the curtains pulled all the time.

Here are the before shots... after to follow.

After!!!! :D :D :D

What went on the bookcase are kid fabrics,
flannel
cut up flannel blocks
batiks
CW fabrics
large pattern flowers etc that don't fit in a color category
there's a pile of unfinished Talk-About-Quilts
a small pile of fabrics I wanted to keep together
a shelf with notebooks of patterns and sale price tags stuff
one open shelf with scissors, rulers etc
bottom has books and magazines
other bottom has all patterns in a basket, along with Wonder Under, photo sheets, etc.

I'm sure I'll rearrange as needed, but this works for now!!

We may take the file cabinet out, but it does help to have it there.

The other picture is a coat tree I use for UFOs. Those are the keepers that won't go to the sale... so they aren't a priority.

Quilt4u 10-26-2008 10:02 AM

Wow!!!! What a stach. Love your sewing room.

Mamagus 10-26-2008 10:07 AM

Lovely make over and the daughter's room is intact (for a few more years! )

Making use of the vertical space in sewing room is essential! And tall book shelves always are a good idea!

Nice job!

Making use of the vertical space in sewing room is essential!
I agree! I had used the space for a design wall, but haven't needed one in years.

PamH 10-26-2008 10:41 AM

Lokks great Karla, you have it very neat and organized

mgshaw 10-26-2008 11:01 AM

Wow! What a difference that made!!! Your room looks bigger!!!! I have been sitting in my sewing room most of the morning alternating between sewing and just staring around the room, trying to figure out what to do to mine to make more room!!! I might have to get some of those bookcases!!!
Looks great Karla!

sewnsewer2 10-26-2008 11:55 AM

Good job! The book cases make all the difference.

fabricluvr 10-26-2008 01:37 PM

jacquemoe 10-26-2008 03:17 PM

Wow, what a difference, Karla. That's some kind of stash you have. I bet you can easily find anything you want. Did you find any surprises while organizing, like fabrics you forgot you had? I know how good it feels to be organized again. Now, on to making more messes

Dancing Needle 10-26-2008 03:28 PM

Great redo Karla!! I was just looking at my "fabric shop" & thinking there are a few things beginning to collect in there that need to be put away. Now I'm inspired :D
When is your craft show? Soon, right??

tlrnhi 10-26-2008 05:40 PM

Now, come clean my room? PLEASE? I'll let you keep Rosie if you do! ;)

Wonderful room you have there. Nice and neat now. I spied some awesome fabrics too, not to mention the quilt.

Janstar 10-26-2008 06:16 PM

Sharon

CindyBee 10-27-2008 01:09 AM

Karla, I love your makeover! You must be very pleased. I have a small room too and will probably do something similar. You've given me a great visual on what it could look like finished. (Have to pull carpet out first though and put in wood flooring.) It's wonderful!

Bevanger 10-27-2008 04:04 AM

What a stash..... I could get lost in it all :P
It sure looks good kiddo........

Patty44 10-27-2008 04:53 AM

That looks so good, thanks for sharing it. That is on my list for this winter is to redo my sewing room and sort out material I don't think I will use. Now I have some good ideas. Love the ladder for the strips, and the coat tree..
Pat

reneebobby 10-27-2008 04:56 AM

I love it. Turned out great.

babeegirl 10-27-2008 05:19 AM

I'm getting ready to move everything to the basement so the guest bedroom can really be a guest bedroom at least until the holidays are over and all the kids go home. There's so much more room down there, I might not move back! Only draweback is no windows to look out and see the pretty outdoors. I'll have cable tv and heat down there:)

racnquilter 10-27-2008 05:57 AM

Love the organization!! I just made the table topper you have hanging on your coat tree. It was so fast and easy. Made it Christmas colors and now want to go get some fall material to make the same thing to use for backing so it is a dual topper.

luvabargain 10-27-2008 07:30 AM

Looks nice!

sewjoyce 10-27-2008 07:39 AM

What a difference. Great sewing room. Now, show us pictures after you finish your next project but before you clean up

shellyp 10-27-2008 07:45 AM

Great make-over! You should be cranking out the quilting now!

Harmony 10-27-2008 08:01 AM

Your sewing room looks great! I guess we really don't need a huge room if we organize it well. Your bookcases are a great addition. I'm impressed by your stash!

quilterpat 10-27-2008 01:20 PM

The makover is great. Isn't it fun to sit with all that fabric in you lap and straighten it out and then put it back together. You now have more space for more fabric. That is what I did and then I could buy more!!! I had so much more space. Love it.

Spudgrandma 10-27-2008 02:26 PM

Great makeover. I cannot believe how neat your sewing area is, mine looks like a bomb exploded most of the time.

Belinda 10-27-2008 02:59 PM

It looks great! It's so much work isn't it!!! And in my case it doesn't last long...
"I'm just going to lay this here for now, I'll find a place for it later...If I don't leave this out I'll forget about it"...etc, etc, etc.
And low and behold the sewing room looks just like it did before I cleaned and organized it!!
Besides having more room after I clean up, I also find things that I forgot I had!

CissyQuilts 10-27-2008 10:14 PM

Your new shelves make a big difference! The room looks great, Karla. :D

pennyswings 11-08-2008 02:29 PM

WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! Love all of your fabrics and love how you have them organized. Very nice. Does your hubby feel better? :D

Alaskan lady 11-08-2008 05:08 PM

Always looking for new ideas on how to reorganize. Really like what you did and it looks great. thanks for sharing.

Law101 11-09-2008 06:41 AM

I love what you did to your little room. I have one suggestion for you. Although I keep all my material in plastic bins on shelves, I took cheap flannel tablecloths and attached them to the top of the shelves, flannel side out. It protects my fabric from fading and gives me a "design wall."
