Show me your orange!

I recently painted my little bathroom butter yellow and have decorated using nature colors and am almost done with a valance for the window. Part of my new transformation. Long story. Anyway ...

For some reason lately I'm obsessed with fabrics in orange. It's such a bright, happy color and it reminds me of sunsets and desert landscapes (I used to live in AZ).

I'd like to make a small rectangular or oval wallhanging using oranges, greens, yellows, but have no idea what pattern would work, so I'd love to see yours, even if it's a block in a quilt.

Please share!

here's my orange quilt-

1 Attachment(s)
it was supposed to be pink & black- but the fabulous orange fabrics kind of took over- my
'quilt police hubby' informed me- if i had bordered it in pink it would not have turned into an orange quilt;)
of course---but i loved the border fabric- and it is what it is :D

I have this quilt loaded & am in the process of quilting it now- i'm using orange thread on the top- have a pink/red/orange hand dyed backing which i am using a veriegated red on the back.

I hear that orange is the "IN" color for this year (in both clothing and home decor). Often referred to as tangerine.

ladypetite 04-12-2012 05:07 AM

WOW~~~ckcowl......that is one gorgeous quilt!!!

DebraK 04-12-2012 05:27 AM

really? again? lol, who decides these things?

disclaimer: I have nothing against orange, and no orange has been hurt in asking these questions. Off to find pictures of my orange quilt ;-)

Here's an orange quilt I made for a cousin. I'd never made anything with orange in it before (and may not again), but I also did a bunch of swaps here on this board and even received donations of free orange fabric in order to complete this. My cousin LOVES it, and it looks great in her loft, which has a lot of exposed brick and hardwood floors.

DebraK 04-12-2012 05:48 AM

I'll bet it looks great in the loft. Very nice.

There must be something in the air... I have been obsessed with the color peach as of late.

ruthrings 04-12-2012 06:13 AM

I've always thought I didn't like orange, but all of these are lovely, including the fabulous google link!

faykilgore 04-12-2012 06:32 AM

What gorgeous quilts!

Ckcowl, I like that pattern, or maybe it's just your fabulous blending of colors. What is the name of the pattern, or is it your personal design?

I called this Lemons and oranges, I gave to my MIL, she loves it.

bearisgray 04-12-2012 09:38 AM

Lots of possibilities using orange - you could go light and bright with lemon yellow and lime green on/with white

You could tone it down with rust and brown - add a touch or purple or eggplant/aubergine and olive green- surprisingly, it does work (the technical reason - it's a triad on a color wheel)

You can put it with red and yellow for a blaze of color - sunset/sunrise colors - add some black for silhouettes

Pantone names a color every year and designers of fashion and home decor follow up with lots of articles in their choice. Year 2012 is the year of "Mango Tango" You can find it in most everything....from paints to bathing suits.

I still have to make a picture of the quilt as it is ready but hey, you can tell there's orange in it;)

faykilgore 04-12-2012 01:03 PM

That is stunning. The picture I'm sure is a pale resemblance to this bright, gorgeous use of COLOR!

I've got an orange one. I call this Carrot Sticks, and have shown it here when it was just a top. Now, it just has a bit of binding for me to do.

katier825 04-12-2012 02:31 PM

One of the other board members did this orange bargello...gorgeous!

Show me your orange (but mine is pink)

Hi, my contribution is pink but I'm sure it would look great in orange, yellow and other natural colors as well. I went to my LQS (Susie's in Garland, TX) and took a 'no' sew quilt class. It's called "Beach Sunrise". I did mine in pink for my daughter, Bridget's, room.

If you would like the pattern I have a copy of it that I can scan and e-mail to anyone who wants it, just send me a PM and I'll get it out to you.

Thanks for looking. I can't wait to see what you make!
Evelyn

I love all of these orange ones. They are all gorgeous. I guess I'll just have to get me some orange for now I am inspired. Thank you all for the beautiful pictures.

Mundy 04-12-2012 03:14 PM

ok this is what I did in sewing room painted the walls bright gold and then went to Joanns bought scrap book paper and bought scalloped designs i the same department. Cut them all out glues then on paper added sequins in the little flowers put in frames and good to good if you have any certain fabric you may use this also and put in frame in the colors you want later may use agin in changing the room colors old frames around the house are great

xsquilter 04-12-2012 03:34 PM

This is my table cover that has yet to be quilted! Soon, honestly, soon!
I was trying to tell the world that orange is the new black, LOL! I too am re-loving orange.

I keep hearing that, too, tho I hear terms like "coral" & "tangerine". But hey, a rose by any other name...

mariehughey 04-12-2012 07:00 PM

I personally love your 3 colors combo...oranges, greens, & yellows. So I will be watching who sends in photos. Just this last week I brought our a quilt that my grandmother made for me years ago. Guess what colors they are? Yep. I will take a photo in the morning and send it to you.

I dunno if this is "orange" enough for you but it's all I've got. It's the very first (of MANY) "Turning 20" quilt I made. It was a wedding qift for one of my DD's best friends.

I LOVE this quilt (& I'm not an "orange person")!!! It looks like orange sherbet (which I DO like... LOL!). Thanks for sharing!
