I made this quilt for my DS and DDIL last year. DDIL's favorite color is purple, so I wanted to use that but didn't want the quilt to be just her color, so I added the greens, browns and golds. It's kingsize. I quilted it in sections on my sewing machine.

You can see the blocks in EQ6 in this post, 2nd page: http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/15/23920.page

How do you like EQ? I've never used it. Can you scan your material in to see how it would actually look in your pattern?

Kyiav10 08-27-2009 09:33 AM

I absolutely love the colors. Great idea about adding other than purples so the quilt belongs to both of them :).
Isn't EQ amazing!

I saw Marti Michell and her quilted-in-sections quilts at Puyallup. I was really intrigued, so I bought her book Machine Quilting in Sections - http://www.amazon.com/MARTI-MICHELL-...1410296&sr=8-1

This book explains a number of ways of breaking a quilt into pieces so that you can handle the quilting with the sewing machine. I've tried several of these methods, and I will continue quilting in sections until I can convince DH that I really need a longarm. (That means I will be quilting in sections for a very long time!)

I don't think that quilting in sections is what most people mean by quilt as you go. Usually QAYG is done with smaller pieces, but the techniques are probably very similar. When I quilt in sections, I may break a queen quilt into only 3 or 4 pieces. One of the things the book teaches is how to look at a quilt design and decide what method would work best for it.

I went on line and you tube has some great instructions. Just type in www.youtube.com then in the search area, type in Quilt as you Go.
Hope this helps.

So beautiful.

Teacup 08-27-2009 06:01 PM

Absolutely wonderful quilt! I love it.

I have read that machine quilting book. Is there a lot of hand work to join the sections/seams? That's not my favorite thing to do.

littlehud 08-27-2009 07:43 PM

That is beautiful. Those colors are just great. Wonderful job.

I wind up blind stitching (by hand) along each seam that is joined after quilting. So for a large quilt that I quilt in 3 vertical sections, for instance, that might mean that I blind stitch 2 quilt lengths. It doesn't usually take me very long. It's not my favorite part of quilting, but it's not really obnoxious either. I've found that the easiest way for me to do it is to lay the quilt across the ironing board or cutting board so that the weight of the quilt is supported while I do the hand stitching. Sometimes you might be able to do the seam by machine, but I haven't tried that. It would show on the front of the quilt, but that might not be an issue.

I machine quilt in sections for many of the reasons outlined in the book, but primarily I want the satisfaction of finishing my quilts myself, and there's no way I could do a large quilt on my sewing machine without dividing it up.

My, that is a beautiful quilt. The lavender/purple is just enough to give it a lavender kind of haze all over. wonderful

Quilt4u 08-28-2009 02:10 AM

Wow!!!!! That is so beautiful.

swimmom 08-28-2009 02:35 AM

WOW!! i love purple and your quilt is just stunning

barnbum 08-28-2009 04:29 AM

That's fabulous!! I love to see the quilts you make!

Re the pattern--it's neat to see how just rotating a few HST can make the difference--like two blocks from one. :D

The piano border is beautiful! I've never done one... once the top is done I want the rest to be simple.
