No more worries, your points are all there and in the right spot, you won't lose a one.

Your block looks great! Didn't you post that beautiful Frosted Stars quilt a month or so ago? I would say that counts as sewing triangles as well. Looks like you are off to a good start - nothing to fear!!

Well I don't actually count my HST's as actual triangles because I make them using two squares, sew up 1/4" on each side of the middle, cut and press open. I'm never working with actual triangles when making them. The bottom of this basket has actual cut triangles and this was my first time working with them like that. I figured it was going to come out all wonky and I had a heck of a time when lining up one side to sew. It didn't look like it was going to come out right. That darn triangle and it's points hanging off just throws everything off for me. But it came out right and I've made two more blocks so all is well! (That was me that posted the Frosted Stars, you have a great memory!)

Thanks everyone for you compliments!

Sew darling! Great start & lovely fabric choices too. Just watched a Fons & Porter I had DVRed a while back & they showed how to use strips to cut your triangles with the long side on the straight of grain. Neat technique. You might check out their website & search that tutorial.Another suggestion was to cut off those "dog ear triangles" that stick out. Helps you line up the pieces much better for joining. Hope this helps. (I had used your method before, two squares, but will try the F&P method on my next project.)

I had just finished my 1st quilt with triangles (cut triangles then sewed together lots of trimming). Then turned on a quilt show & found the way to make 2 at once. Do you know that one? Cut 2 squares, put right sides together, draw a line from corner to corner, then stitch 1/4 inch on each side of drawn line, then cut down drawn line. 2 complete triangles. You can chain stitch this goes real fast. Hope you can understand my instructions. Great job so far.

Your basket is gorgeous!! I love those fabrics :D:D:D

glenda 02-03-2011 11:25 AM

Have you tried the 7/8 inch trick? Cut 2 squares plus 7/8 of an inch, mark them diagonally (one way), sew 1/4 inch from the line, cut in half and you have 2 hst without any bias seams. Try it.

Tropical 02-03-2011 11:28 AM

You have indeed conquered triangles! That is a pretty happy looking basket. Good for you!

Lindsey 02-03-2011 11:28 AM

If your afraid of triangles when making the bottom of the basket just use a large square and trim after sewing corner to corner.

almostfree 02-03-2011 11:30 AM

Your triangles look great! It's funny you should say that, because I, too, have feared them! But it's a New Year's resolution this year to use triangles in a quilt. Great job!

jtapp9 02-03-2011 11:32 AM
