I know it's silly but I have feared triangles since I started quilting a year ago. They confuse me and that bias edge is a nightmare. I tried making this basket block using two HST's at the bottom but really didn't like the look of the extra seam. It just looked cluttered. So I bit the bullet and tried making it with triangles. A lot of starch helps with the bias edge and even though lining up the triangles for sewing still confuses me, it didn't throw me off too bad. I'm tickled with my first block and looking forward to making the rest of them (17 more plus doing the flower applique in the center white area of each). I have officially conquered triangles! :D

Your first block looks great!
Remember to enjoy the process and don't fret if it isn't all perfection!

Looks great! Except for paper-piecing, I have not tried triangles. One of these days (sigh).

Great block and pretty fabrics!

Looks so bright and clean and you did an excellent job. I just finished a quilt with LOTS of bias edges and I was very glad when it was finished. I have never hesitated to work with triangles, etc. but I've not always produced my best work with them either. You are well on your way and I hope you feel confidence in what you've done.

Cherylsea 02-02-2011 02:59 PM

Looks like you have mastered Triangles 101! They look great, it should be a very pretty quilt.

Very pretty. Nice job.

kathdavis 02-02-2011 03:21 PM

Those are sweet. You did a great job. Only about 119 more HST to go. You will be able to do them in your sleep when you are finished. Enjoy!

wolph33 02-02-2011 03:23 PM

looks great

katier825 02-02-2011 03:26 PM

Very nice job! Starch is a lifesaver - I can't believe I waited so long to try it. It helped a lot with my pinwheel quilt. I didn't have any problems with the bias when I starched. I really like that stack of fabric. So fresh and pretty looking!

clem55 02-02-2011 03:32 PM

very pretty! I love the basket fabric.

LoisN 02-02-2011 03:33 PM

That is so pretty! Now that you've mastered that, what will your next trick be?

earthwalker 02-02-2011 03:44 PM

Beautifully done, so fresh and neat...what a brilliant start.

RkayD 02-02-2011 03:47 PM

Isn't it funny how we fear those things? I found a box of half finished blocks and bits & pieces from when I first started quilting. It had triangles and all sorts of things..I did just fine until I started reading about how scary all this stuff was. I kinda wish I could go back to the time when I was clueless. LoL!

BevF 02-02-2011 04:04 PM

Wouldn't know this was your first triangle block. Great job. I hope you show us the finished top.

EIQuilter 02-02-2011 04:37 PM

You did a wonderful job, and I love the colorful basket. Way to go!

Friendly Quilter 02-02-2011 04:40 PM

Your block came out beautiful. Half sq triangles are wonderful to use. They are usally sm enough to not have to worry about the bias. Great job.

NikkiLu 02-02-2011 04:55 PM

Looks perfect to me. You did a fabulous job and won't lose the ends of your points when you sew your next 1/4" seam. Way to go!

BizzieLizzie 02-02-2011 04:58 PM

Very pretty, nice work.

Jan T 02-02-2011 09:46 PM

Triangles are one of the best shapes in the quilting process. They are fundamental building blocks. You'll love them when they have no power to intimidate you. WELL DONE!

RedGarnet222 02-02-2011 09:56 PM

You did better at your first triangle block than I did! It is really springy looking. Very very good!

terri bb 02-02-2011 11:13 PM

looks fantastic! i started working with HST today for the first time too :) i decided to push that envelope just a bit, made a bigger center piece, then there are 56 HST around it so i can get used to them! yours look beautiful and i'll be proud if mine look half as good as yours!

raggedyann 02-03-2011 12:25 AM

adorable!

AnneT 02-03-2011 12:33 AM

You did great with your triangles! I love the combo of traditional pattern with modern and bright fabrics you're using. This will be a gorgeous quilt.
