Storm At Sea

2 Attachment(s)
Starting a new quilt today.Doing a Storm At Sea in Batiks. This pattern was the first quilt I ever made, years ago. Made it for my son Bo when he left home for College. Last year he brought it to me and said "Mom think my quilt needs patched". and then we took a look. :):) Well guys there was no patching it, but u know what, it had been truly loved and used, which is what I love to see done with my quilts. So then he ask if i would make him another quilt. And I said yes son I will.I said, do u what to look through some of my designs and choose one, and he said, nope, want another Storm At Sea. Well, i have never made the same pattern twice, lol, always wanting a new challenge. But, for my son, I agreed. So, I choose lots of dif Batiks from Mary Jo's, and yes i did sneak a few extra in the order for me , :):) Here is a pic of the materials. and the first peces cut out. These are the 60 dark fabric diamonds that will be used in it.

Those sons!! They can wrangle blood out of a turnip. I would be so pleased that he had asked for another one. What a testament to how well he liked it and the memories he has of it. Please share the finished quilt.

blahel 07-20-2014 06:59 PM

would love to see your step by step progress as a storm at sea is on my to do list! is there a reason you chose dark diamonds i.e. was it just your preference or does the pattern tell you that?

Ninnie 07-20-2014 07:22 PM

I did the first one with lots of dif materials. love the scrappy look, and how it all comes together to make the waves. And I also love Batiks, so putting the two together. Also the book that I have with the pattern shows it done with lots of colors. Will try tom to maybe post a pic of the first one, and all can see what bad shape it is in :):):)

DebbieJJ 07-20-2014 11:57 PM

Ok. second day of cutting, got interrupted lol with company So today we added 20 (6 1/2 in squares)60 white diamonds. and 100 half square triangles. This is the way i keep it organized. I place each group of pieces in a sandwich bag, and write on the front. And you can reuse your bags over and over.

sahm4605 07-21-2014 12:01 PM

It's going to be beautiful! Storm at Sea is on my list for some day. I keep having other quilts that
"need" to be done first....

Nice fabrics and story! Storm at Sea on my to do list as well.

MargeD 07-21-2014 04:15 PM

What a great batch of batiks, they have such wonderful colors and patterns, I think they are my favorite material to use for quilts, although not as many as I would like. I have a Mariner's Compass in the works in batiks, then I searched for 2-3 years for just the right batiks to use for a Boston Commons quilt that I saw on the cover of a quilt magazine, Traditional Quilters, I think; but it was made by the owner of Heartbeat Quilts on the Cape. I hope to get to that quilt in a year or two after making a king size quilt for my DS and DDIL, and a great number of quilts to make on my "Roundtoit List", so hope I get around to doing it soon. I think it's wonderful when you make a quilt for someone who literally "loves it to pieces", what a wonderful commentary on how well they loved the quilt. My son still has his Triple Irish Chain I made him when he was about 12, and even when he would leave and come back home, the quilt always came with him.

Thank you for posting your progress. You selected lovely fabrics. I'm anxious to see the finished quilt.

quilt938 07-21-2014 06:39 PM

I want to see the much loved one! This pattern is on my 'list' as well...one of these days!

Teacup 07-21-2014 06:49 PM

I'm going to follow along too, Ninnie! You always do such great work. I love this pattern, which many people say to paper piece, but I don't really enjoy that process. It will be interesting to see how you do it.

Jannie 07-21-2014 07:52 PM

Your colors are wonderful and I have thought about doing this pattern. Would love to see the quilt when you have it completed.

cdmmiracles 07-22-2014 03:20 AM

Awesome colors. I too will be following along.....as it is next on my list of todo's - for my brother; as soon as I finish my queen size twister quilt for sis. Looking forward to watching your progress!

Those fabrics will be a treasure that is for sure. Those boys love their quilts!

Sondi 07-22-2014 09:59 AM

It is great to see your process and to follow your progress. You inspire me to get up and start sewing and quilting.

Pennyhal 07-22-2014 10:43 AM

When I make a quilt, I put the leftover fabric in a bag and save it as a repair kit. Now, I'm thinking that it was not such a good idea as the quilts I've made for family have been well used, and the fabrics are all faded. So just adding the saved would stick out like a sore thumb.

tessagin 07-22-2014 11:01 AM

Made tears come to my eyes. Must share finished.

Today"s Progress

1 Attachment(s)
So we are coming to the end of the cutting for the dark pieces. This was my progress today. I cut 25 (4 12 in) squares. 72 (3in) squares that i then cut in half to get 144 (hst). Then i cut 104 rectangles that were (2 13/16 in by 5 9/16 in). These will be cut in half tomorrow to make 104 Ts and a 104 Tsr. Just could not cut any longer today, It is hard to tell the front from the back when working with Batiks. so i will finish they in the morning with a fresh rested set of eyes :):):) . Also Tomorrow we shall start cutting the lights. Here is a pic of today's progress
