These blocks are so fun and liberating. No measuring, no matching, just playing in your scraps. I need to sew about 1,000 more to get rid of all my scraps, but here's what I was able to get done today.

I love it. What did you use for your stabiilizer?

liblueeyes 01-10-2010 02:59 PM

Love it - I get the sewing of the strips together - but how did you cut them?
Thanks !

Yes, I would like to know too. Hubby is totally confused as to why I am saving little pieces of fabric. I think a strip quilt like this would be a great way to use them. I also am thinking about what I think they call a "crumb" quilt...guess you need a foundation for that too???

sewNso 01-10-2010 03:20 PM

beautiful quilt blocks. okay, so what is stabalizer. is that paper we quilt on top of? like paper piecing? i think?

Yvonne 01-10-2010 03:34 PM

Cool, Chele! I need to join you. My grandson claimed the last quilt I made with string blocks. What size block are you creating. I'll be right with you.

Olivia's Grammy 01-10-2010 03:45 PM

Those are beautiful. I love to make string blocks. One of the first things I teach new students is string blocks to make a pillow.

vicki reno 01-10-2010 03:47 PM

I would have known it was yours even if I hadn't seen your name on the post. It has your bright colors! Great job. I like it and will gladly accept it when you are done. I am not too proud to accept other people's work as gifts!

Sewsweet 01-10-2010 04:29 PM

Where do you find the patten for this?

barnbum 01-10-2010 04:30 PM

I love liberating patterns!! It's going to be bright!

zkosh 01-10-2010 04:34 PM

Really beautiful! I'm saving scraps, too, with the idea that it will be fun to put things together that weren't overly planned.

Jim's Gem 01-10-2010 04:49 PM

That looks nice and bright. What a great way to use up scraps!!

paintedquilt 01-10-2010 04:49 PM

Very old fashioned and modern at the same time

watterstide 01-10-2010 05:02 PM

I use cheap muslin for the stabilizer..some use paper. I cut them 13 1/2 inches and when done, square them to 12 1/2.

charmpacksplus 01-10-2010 05:05 PM

I love scrappy quilts! :)

quilter girl 01-10-2010 06:15 PM

Shadow Dancer 01-10-2010 06:16 PM

Awesome Chele!! I love string blocks! :)

RedGarnet222 01-10-2010 06:26 PM

Oh my!!! You were on a mission, Chele! This is really going to be a fun quilt when it is finished. Great bright colors to work with in the winter.

ScrapQuilter 01-10-2010 06:35 PM

Chele......... love your scrap quilt... have my granddaughter working on one. I use light weight interfacing for my backing when I do these kind of blocks also use it for flip and sew blocks or crazy quilt blocks.

ambquilter 01-10-2010 06:50 PM

I've always wanted to do a string quilt. I may have to move it to the top of my to-do list after your inspiration.

judee0624 01-10-2010 06:52 PM

Yes,Chele, I too love string blocks. I have enough now to make a lap quilt. How are you backing yours? The first one I did I used only fleece.

BKinCO 01-10-2010 06:54 PM

So cool! I'm remembering this!!!

Chele 01-10-2010 07:40 PM

Thank you so much for the quilt love! These blocks trim at 6.5". I cut 7" foundation squares from inexpensive muslin. I used leftover bobbins, almost gone thread spools, and my scraps. This is really a total scrap buster project!

Here's neat tutorial if you're not familiar with this fun and easy block: http://loftcreations.blogspot.com/20...by-sleeps.html

Your own version will use the scraps you've worked with and love. It probably won't be as crazy as mine. Most of you know I'm a huge fan of color and design! But wouldn't one of these look spectacular in civil war repros, or Fall colors? Or pastels? I'd love to see what you come up with!

Thanks again!

Ms Grace 01-10-2010 07:49 PM

cande 01-10-2010 08:03 PM

Mine looks very much like yours; I'll have to see if I have a picture of it. I used some old sheets for the stabilizer.

littlehud 01-10-2010 09:17 PM

That is so pretty. So bright and vibrant. I love it.

genghis khan 01-10-2010 09:45 PM

Hi Chele,
Aren't they just so fun to make! I've done quite a few and haven't even made a dent in my scraps!

k3n 01-11-2010 04:48 AM

Hi Chele - that is beautiful! I made a lappy for Joey with string blocks ages ago and seeing yours, I think it's about time I made another one! :-D
