Stupendous Stitching

1 Attachment(s)
I took the class "Stupendous Stitching" from Craftsy.com and have absolutely fallen in love with my project, so I wanted to share. I love how there is SO much too it- busy, but it all comes together. There is couching, decorative stitches, hand embroidery, and quilting.

This piece is 18x18. It will be mounted permanently onto foam board (glued down) and put onto the wall.

I have never done rat-tail binding before, and the bottom edge ruffled- I can't figure out why, as I didn't do anything differently on the other sides But for a first try, I'm pretty pleased. I think rat tail might be a nice alternative to traditional binding on wall hangings.

Woah- that picture is bigger than I intended. Sorry :(

I am glueing it to a board because that is a traditional method of mounting a piece of art. If you take a print to a framing shop, they will often glue it to foam board before framing (which is good to know if you ever want something framed that you don't want glued!!!) It is a method of permanent mounting.

The stitches are hand and machine. The hand stitches were just done with plain embroidery thread (all the strands together) and with yarn, as I had a much wider selection of yarn.

I did not dye the fabric, it is a batik fat quarter.

Rat-tail is a round satin cording. It is zig zagged to the borders to serve as binding, rather than bias tape.

Very pretty.

bjchad 01-08-2012 03:22 PM

Gorgeous! Can you lace it around the foam instead of using glue?

I won't, but I suppose you could. If you didn't want to glue it, you could just add a hanging strip like most wall hanging quilts.

Really nice! I'm taking that class now and am loving it.

pls1946 01-09-2012 02:00 PM

Did you use stablizer on the back or just starch? Your piece is lovely! Although I don't have many fancy stitches on my machine....I will give this a try...just have to use more hand work and embellishments.

Dkm 01-09-2012 02:40 PM

Thanks for sharing. I have just signed up for my first course with Crafty. It is not this one but you learned a great deal with your course; your art quilt came out great.
