Very cool...the "old fashioned" way to make a twister!

weasier22 03-14-2012 12:32 PM

Love the colors...the red makes it pop! Thanks for sharing.

1. cut the strips 4 3/4 inches wide. (use four different fabrics)

2. stack four strips on top of each other with the right sides facing up on all strips.

3. place template at one end and trace around with a mico pen.

4. cut out with ruler and rotary cutter, turning as needed (four patches)

5.check the beginning of post to see how to put it together

The patch

I made a pdf of the patch for you. I printed it out to check it and it is perfect. I am going to go and work on my table runner now and will post when done....

Thank you for all your work! It is much appreciated.

mcar 03-14-2012 03:18 PM

A first look your work reminded me of VanGogh. Really! The color choices and motion created hinted that. Thank for taking the time to teach all of us how to do the same work.

You are all welcome. I love to share...as I really enjoy this board and the members...

Sunnye 03-14-2012 04:37 PM

I really like that. It's very pretty and you are so right about the colors. Very nice!

Blocks together

1 Attachment(s)
I just finished sewing the blocks together for the table runner. I wish now that I had waited to sew the blocks together. I see now that I could have added more different fabics, and played around with the blocks, once I understood the pattern. I did manage add a dark wine, a dark green and a purple print, a red print and some orange.

I have never made a table runner so I dont' even know how wide it should be lol....I will find out and add borders or strips. I will wait to quilt it as I want to quilt it on my Gammill. I want to make a wall hanging out of the same book and then quilt them together.

Rosyhf 03-14-2012 06:16 PM

I think later on as the mood strikes, I will reduce the templater and make smaller blocks unsing tons of scraps and going wild for a wall hanger....one can really play with color with this type of quilt.....

Would make a cheerful kitchen--as placemats! Does remind me of the twister blocks too.

Floralfab 03-15-2012 12:53 PM

Lately I've been thinking that I would like to try the twister pattern and have checked out the price of the templates on line. I just came across your directions and they sound wonderful. I'm going to see if I can get the book you mentioned and try making a table runner. I like the idea of cutting using a ruler as I do not trust myself trying to cut around template plastic. Thanks for your great information!

P.S. I just found the pdf for the patch that you posted. Thank you so much.

suzanprincess 03-15-2012 03:34 PM

I looked at the site Rosy gave us http://country-schoolhouse.com/twister_tool.htm and noticed that the quilts pictured there have the template reversed, with the sharper angle pointing left. It gives a different spin to the patches and the whole quilt. This template could be used either way, a plus.

Rosyhf 03-15-2012 05:00 PM

yes, I made a mistake cutting and have some turning the other way. Thank goodness they were batik I can use the wrong side. Remember to all put your strips right side up or all left side up. I am working on with a smaller template now and cutting out the patches....

Pat-w 03-15-2012 07:15 PM

I'm with you....I'd go for the red too! Like the bright colors. Can't wait to see your finished quilt.

Dakota Rose 03-16-2012 06:55 AM

Thanks. That is how I pictured it. I will try this soon. I may even steal your color combination but my stash has them in slightly different shades.

nancia 03-16-2012 07:00 AM

love the contrast and the POP of red!

irishrose 03-16-2012 07:54 AM

Love the colors and the pattern. Thank you for your work.

princdi 03-17-2012 05:14 AM

Love it, I am making a small one now and then a larger one
GOOD IDEA

Sorry about the above post; afterwards I went through and read the entire thread and saw what you wrote about it. I have one of the twister tools which is wonderful but there is some waste. I want to try your method now; thanks!
Does anyone know the size of the "tiniest" twister tool?

Rosyhf 03-17-2012 09:26 AM

I am so glad that I inspired a few of you to do it. It really is relaxing to play with the patches. I haven't been able to work on my little one but do have a lot of patches cut and can't seem to stop cutting more patches lol...but that is because I want a lot that I can choose from. I am so looking forward to starting.

I cut for two hours the other day and my feet were hurting even tho I stood on a mat, I should have worn the tennis shoes....so I would recommend, sitting at a table and cutting if you plan to cut a lot. I am doing that today. I need more patches and I have huge pin of scraps lol.

Rosyhf 03-17-2012 09:30 AM

In another thread that I had started, I asked: What is the web quilting on lately and got lots of answers. I think the next craze is the wheel stuff. Like this twister, that I prefer to call a windmill. I checked out my Block Base and there are so many nice blocks in the wheels section. I hope everyone has Block Base, it is such a good program to have. I use mine over and over.

Shermy 03-17-2012 06:23 PM

Thank you Rosy for all the info...I just love this site...Can learn so many new things about quilting.. Another pattern I am going to try...

The little Windmills

Or small Twister. I cut some more small patches. It is so addictive. I can't stop cutting. Everytime I look in my scrap bin, I want to cut some of this and some of that. I decided to stop and start to create on the board and cut more as I need the colors.

I have these large plexiglass sheets that come in so handy. I put all the patches on one and took it over to the board and started to create. Later when it comes time to sew I can transfer a bunch to the same plex and take it over to the machine.

I am really excited about this little one. I will post when I get a bunch on the board. In the meantime here are some of the patches....I love my scrap bin.

Note: you need four patches of each fabric so you can flow from one twist to another. Now you can also have just two of a color for the outside of the design. I didn't count the patches. I just cut whatever the scrap allowed, so the extra ones will go at the top, bottom and sides, as you only need a half a twist on those.

Here is the little Twister on the design board. My feet are so tired. I cut 465 pieces and used 440 peice. The patches are 4.5 by 4.5 and will be 4 inches finished. There are 10 blocks in a row across by 11 rows down. The wall hanging will measure 40x44. I will just add a tiny 1 inch borde that will finish at 3/4 of an inch.

Now the sewing will begin and that will be a lot of sewing. I checked down both side and the top and bottom to make sure that all the half blades match. Then I checked all the blades in the quilt to make sure they all matched.

I started with putting up one block at a time for the row, but switched to to doing just one row at a time (half a block) as it went faster. I cut patches for three days at different times, just some at a time.

I like the way you used the colors to really show the complements in this piece. I have Marys' book and also want to do some studies from it. I like her work.
peace

EDIT: I posted before I saw the whole thread and all I have to say now is Awesome.
I love it!

Rosyhf 03-19-2012 03:46 PM

Thank you Ube, I am now sewing it together, oh my, what a job. I am on the sixth row. It is looking better and I like the small blades. I can't wait to finish it. Back to work lol.

I have the "Itty Bitty" Twister tool and the size is 1-1/2 square, line is 3/8ths from the corners and it says it finishes at 1 inch . Your square should be 2-1/2 inches. I think there is another one between this one and the 5 inch one, but I don't have it.

Rosyhf 03-19-2012 06:50 PM

The one I am doing now, finishes at 3 3/4 inch square. I dont' think I would tackle any smaller one than that lol.

Wow,what a eye for color you have,nicely done !!

All done, thank God lol. That was a lot of sewing. The finished top uses Value, Temperature and Contrast. Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. Temperature is the hot or coldness of a color and Contrast give you the view between what you see in the front and what surrounds. As you can see the lightest and hottest comes forward and the coolest and darkest recedes to the back. I used Light, medium and dark fabrics.....
