I haven't been too quilty lately lol. I was looking through my books and found this little deal and thought I would make something small, like a table runner. I had seen these before somewhere and I think you had to buy a pattern and template....but my brain said, "it is in one of your books" and sure enough it was.

The book, Confetti Quilts, by Mary Mashuta. The book has a pattern. I copied the pattern and glued it to the plastic sheet and cut it out. I would then trace around the template with a micro pen and cut out four at a time with the rotary cutter and ruler. I didn't have to buy a template...waste not, want not lol.....

The thing this, with this little pattern is....you have to build the design on your wall or you will get confused..

you need four different fabrics or more. I used four to try it out. I cut out a bunch with the template out of the four and put them on the board. Now you see how you have to match each fabric to the pinwheel. After you match them, you then remove block by block onto a board, sew that block, put it back on the wall and do another and so on. Then sew the blocks together and then the rows......

You can see how the red takes over? Consider that if you make one of these. It worked fine for me, I wanted the red. Also, the red is next to it's compliment of Green and that makes the red very attractive. The red is also brighter than it's compliment..

So we have a color and it's compliment, hot and cool colors. Since Red is the hottest, it will take over from the cool colors.

Thank you for the color explanation...still need to learn more but this helps!

Very pretty, I usually pick out a print and find colors to match other colors in the print. I don't use a color wheel, not my choice of colors.

granmalovesyou 03-13-2012 06:35 AM

love the colors and red is one of my favorites

oma66 03-13-2012 07:23 AM

A whole quilt is in the book and it's stunning! The book is well worth the money as there are several designs in it that one would like to make (I am).
Here is a link to get an idea.

http://country-schoolhouse.com/twister_tool.htm

Now I did a research on the twister and found a template and a pattern you must purchase. I think the template is a waste of time and fabric. It has you sewing four squares together and then you line up the template and cut around it, wasting lots of fabric and not to mention extra sewing.

The template I use is the direct patch to sew and no lining ip of seams required. One can go to the web and see how to put it together.

I will try to figure out in inches and lines how to make this easy one patch template and post it here. If I am successful, I will be back within a short time with the instruction.

Ok, company came by so now I'm back with your template for those of you who would like to try it.

Take you ruler and lay it on a sheet of paper, line up the right side and the bottom of the paper with the ruler to measure a square of 4 and 3/4 by 4 inches.

Now draw the square in with a mechanical pencil (fine point). While the ruler is in place, mark a dot or line (is better) 2 and 1/4 inch from the left side. What is left is 1 and 3/4 ins on the right side which equals the 4 inches of the square right?

Now from the right side down from the line, measure 2 inches down and make a dot or line.

Line up the dot at the top of the square to the one down the right side and draw a line.

Line up the same dot at the top with the bottom of the left side and draw a line. This is the template... Cut out and glue to template plastic. The 1/4 ins seam allowance is include.

Would make a great quilt, thanks for sharing :)

There is a slightly different method in Anita Grossman Solomon's book "Rotary Cutting Revolution"
I have wanted to try it but haven't gotten to it yet. It has been a while since I looked at it, but I believe that you mark your cutting board as a guide. Make all the cuts from a square of fabric (layered at least 4) before moving the fabric. Then place the pieces on your design wall just like this one. Eliminates both the template and the waste.

Rosy, thank you so much for your wonderful tutorial. Great job.

dd55 03-14-2012 03:55 AM

looks great. can't wait to see your finished quilt.

stitchinwitch 03-14-2012 04:46 AM

That is ingenious of you! Good thinking - what size was your "template" and I guess it wasn't necessary to make up a top of squares first??

duckydo 03-14-2012 04:51 AM

It does look like the twister. I have made one and it is lots of fun and goes together really fast.

krista 03-14-2012 05:24 AM

That is so awesome! I love your choice of colors!

gramquilter2 03-14-2012 06:29 AM

I suppose the size of the template is the measurements of the lenght and width of it? I cut the strips at 4 and 3/4 on the lenght of grain. You then stack up 4 strips, all right sides up, use the micro pen to trace around the template and cut out with the rotary cutter and ruler, turning the strips as needed. I used scraps so the strips weren't that long. If you are using yardage, you can control how long you make the strips. I usually cut a half yard off and cut the stips on the lenght of grain.

You do not have to make up a square as you are cutting the exact patch and it goes fast to sew them up....no waste and saved sewing time.

solstice3 03-14-2012 12:02 PM

Very nice. Can't wait to see the finished product

Dakota Rose 03-14-2012 12:05 PM

Love your colors and design. Can't get my head around how you cut it out but maybe if I try it I will get it. I think you are putting all the colors on on top of the other and cutting them and then moving the pieces around but I will try it. Yours is so pretty.

Gladys 03-14-2012 12:09 PM

That is very very pretty.
