Super bright and colorful kids quilt (sunglasses warning!)

I started this out as an exercise in needle turn applique with a freezer paper foundation on the back to assist me in turning. I then cut slits in the back of the block to remove the freezer papers.

It is built around the focus kitty fabric in the wonky square blocks. The quilt is Waaay to colorful and garish for my tastes. In fact I dubbed the top "Technicolor Vomit". LOL. The flowers reminded me of cartoon "splats" and all the colors mixed up like that with no rhyme or reason. Once assembled, all I could think is it looks like a cartoon character threw up on it, hence the name. While way to bright for me the recipient is a 6 year old girl who "loves anything bright and colorful" so I think this will fit the bill. I decided to embrace the in your face garishness and did the quilting in a variegated red thread. It will go to its intended recipient with no label so no one but me and all of you will know I called this quilt Technicolor Vomit.

The back is Minky and keeping in the theme, it is a hot pink and white chevron. This was my first time successfully using it as a backing. I think the trick with Minky is to use a dense batting like W&N so the fibers can't migrated back to the top, which was my first experience with Minky. I brought the backing to the front to bind and left an additional half inch of batting so the Minky binding is 1" wide.

Tech details
Pattern: Flower Power from the book Fresh and Fabulous Quilts. https://www.amazon.com/Fresh-Fabulou.../dp/1564778231
Batting: Warm and Natural
Quilting is freehand done on my Innova 26" longarm. I did a tight stipple behind the flowers and made two smaller flower templates in that same "splat" shape to do in the wonky square blocks with a loopy vine and leaf to fill in between.
Quilt size: Approximately 52" x 62"

So put on your sunglasses and here are the pics:

Beautiful work! What a colorful quilt!

bearisgray 07-02-2018 05:34 AM

As usual, your technique is superb!

Thank you for the technical details - such as pattern used, batting used, etc.

I have - or at least had - some of that cat print fabric.

What a beautiful quilt and I love your quilting too. Thank you for sharing.

It is really a nice quilt and so bright and colorful. It looks like a jigsaw puzzle to me. I also would like to see the quilt underneath your colorful quilt. That looks pretty too. Please share a picture of the quilt that is apparently on your bed and looks so nice.

Barb in Louisiana 07-02-2018 06:53 AM

I am a garish, bright, fun person, and I love the quilt. It would be perfect in my house.

Hi Jordan, That quilt is pictured here: https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...lt-t85150.html

I made that quilt for my most wonderful MIL who went home to our Lord the beginning of June. While we are sad she isn't with us any more we are happy she is no longer suffering and we know she is surrounded in love. The quilt came back to me and holds so many fond memories of her for me. When I gifted it to her she hugged it close and said "This quilt is a true badge of honor because it shows someone loves me so much they made me a quilt". She showed that quilt off to anyone who would look.

There are teenagers out there that would love it. I think the sunglasses warning in your title was cute.

PaperPrincess 07-02-2018 07:28 AM

Love it! I think the 'splat' name is perfect. All the quilting is superb, but I really like the leaf & berries.

Cheshirepat 07-02-2018 09:04 AM

I absolutely love the brights, and all your work on this is amazing! I'm sure she'll be beyond thrilled! I would be!

Tweety2911 07-02-2018 09:04 AM

I just love a "happy" quilt and yours is wonderful.

pewa88 07-02-2018 10:23 AM

This is a happy, happy quilt.

Doggramma 07-02-2018 10:25 AM

What a fun quilt! Great job

ekuw 07-02-2018 10:47 AM

Fabulous! This quilt ain't your grandmothers quilt! Lots of younger people like this style :-)

osewme 07-02-2018 11:03 AM

I love the colorful, fun quilt.

Gillian.B 07-02-2018 11:21 AM

I love it!! In my opinion nothing can be too bright! Beautiful applique and quilting too.

I love it! And, I agree with Barb! What a wonderful bright quilt. Any young-at-heart person would treasure it, so stop calling it nasty names! :)

Nechama117 07-02-2018 11:29 AM

So adorable. I love the bright colors.

zozee 07-02-2018 11:48 AM

I like it! Bright and cheerful, not garish, but certainly not everyone agrees on what is cheerful. It's gonna be well loved. I'm just so glad to read certain posts here where a quilter she doesn't care for the quilt she's making or just made but since it's made for someone who Will appreciate it, then it's redeemed. I currently am having a hard time finishing an I Spy quilt because it's so busy. I don't do busy, but most kids enjoy the hunt.

Maureen NJ 07-02-2018 02:56 PM

I also love it. Great colors. I think any child or teenager would love it! How did you applique it? Did you do the needle turn appliqué to each half and then piece the halves?

Jingle 07-02-2018 04:15 PM

I think it is beautiful and the 6 year old girl will to. Beautiful quilting also.

DJ 07-02-2018 04:32 PM

That's a fantastic quilt and really beautiful quilting.

wesing 07-02-2018 05:03 PM

I love the quilt, but I like bright colors. As much as I like the quilt, I still had a good snicker over your name for it.

Lynnie25 07-02-2018 05:20 PM

Love, love this colourful quilt, just perfect for a younger person to enjoy

SusieQOH 07-02-2018 06:02 PM

I love it! You do such wonderful work!!!

Teen 07-02-2018 06:40 PM

Call me garish but I love this!! Makes me smile as I'm sure the recipient will do when she receives it. Wonderful work. I've used W&N on Minky backing, too, with no problems. Thank you for the details.

SewingSew 07-02-2018 08:16 PM

I love this quilt! It makes me happy just to look at it. The colors are so bright and cheerful. I love your name for it and your decription. Isn't it funny how people react so differently to color and design? What one person describes as garish, another person describes as beautiful. Your quilt is beautiful and you did an outstanding job making it.

Grandma Peg 07-02-2018 09:12 PM

Love your quilt!!

jmoore 07-03-2018 02:33 AM

What a fabulous and fun quilt. I think you did a great job on your needle turn appliqué and construction of your quilt. Thank you for sharing.

copycat 07-03-2018 02:44 AM

The flowers look great! I love the whimsical shape...that does look like a cartoon splat. :) I am with the lucky 6yr old that gets to enjoy your quilt...I love bright colors also. Thank you for the tip about using dense batting when quilting with minky. (good to know) Fantastic idea to use the minky as the binding also. I like the name of the pattern for your quilt...flower power. This quilt is sure to be loved.

Gerbie 07-03-2018 02:50 AM

You could still label and name it, just name it "Technicolor" for the recipient.

gramipam 07-03-2018 03:16 AM

A quilter with vision! I love your quilt!

toverly 07-03-2018 03:47 AM

That quilt is a great big smile! Beautiful and colorful. Good job.

Kris P 07-03-2018 04:07 AM

Yes, it's bright, but I think it's awesome! The recipient is going to love it.

JanelleTrebuna 07-03-2018 04:28 AM

Wow! That is super cute. I really love it.
It brings a smile to your face :)

Not quite, the template for the flower applique was elongated in the middle to account for the seam allowance. So I appliqued a complete elongated flower to a full square that was cut 7/8" bigger than the finished block size, (I think I went a full inch and cut down once the two halves were sewn together). I made sure to place the flower so the elongated part was on point. I found it was easiest to fold my square in half on the diagonal and fold my flower in half then line up the fold marks to pin and applique down. I had to do two blocks for each flower, reversing color placement, for example yellow flower on orange background and orange flower on yellow background. Then I cut each completed applique in half on the diagonal and pieced the two contrasting halves together. I used elmers washable school glue to ensure the flower applique was lined up before stitching the two triangle halves together.

If you go to the link for the book I posted you can actually see a small diagram showing how the blocks are cut. They omitted the applique template on the "look inside" feature. It was actually quite fun making the flower blocks but once I got it all together is when I didn't love it so much.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. It appears a lot of you like bold bright colors in your quilts. I do too, actually, but I think I need them to be unified with a common background color. Like I love jewel tone fabrics on a black or dark solid background. I think that might be my issue with this quilt. I don't feel like the eye has anywhere to rest and there isn't really a unifying factor anywhere as far as color is concerned. It is a fun, happy quilt, just not my cup of tea. ;)
