I tried to post a few minutes ago but nothing happened. I apologize if this becomes a double post.
I want to thank all of you for your help. It may be that this quilt would have ended up "out the window" without your great ideas, tips and suggestions.

I tried my hand at fmq for the first time and also sid. This is the second queen size quilt I have made (both are the same pattern). My sister got the first one and I decided to give it another go for our home. I am really happy I did. There is next to no cotton in this quilt - all made with fabrics I had on hand.

It is a beautiful quilt...what kind of fabrics did you use? Nice quilting done on it too.

I used linen, a poly mix (made a suit from it years ago and still had quite a bit here) and an "unknown fibers (the dotted one). The batting is cotton and the backing is muslin.

bearisgray 09-06-2011 09:49 AM

It's very rich looking. Nice job on it!

I think this answers the question of whether it's "necessary" to use only 100% cotton in quilts. Nice workl!

DebraK 09-06-2011 09:55 AM

The HST's were cut at 9 inches and then I squared them up to 8 inches. I know that's a lot of waste, but I had lots of fabric and didn't want to take a chance on having anything out of square. I also put 4 borders on this quilt to make it fit a queen size bed. Here is the pattern I used:

It is a free pattern and very easy (although it took me a lot more than 4 hours to do it).

I just looked at that pattern and your squares are larger than theirs. That's what I really liked about your quilt (along with your color choices)! This has been in my bucket list of quilts to make and when I do I'll use your 8 inch squares. Thanks!

Your quilt is beautiful, and I like the colors and fabrics you used. My mother used what she had too, and made some of the most beautiful quilts.
