Top done, but odd size?
1 Attachment(s)
I've just completed this top.
As it stands, it is 70 inch square. I call this the odd size as it is too big to be a lap, but too small to be a bed quilt. I don't think this goes well with my decor, so that rules out wall quilt. So I need advice - should I leave it as 70 inch square, or add borders to enlarge it? I am hesitant about adding if it doesn't gel with the original feel/design. Most importantly, I don't have anymore of the fabric! What do you think? Thanks:) |
It is lovely. If anything I would do a black border. When my quilts are odd sizes, I like to toss on a bed or over the back of a chair, etc.

These are mostly Kaffe Fasset's range from a few years back. I was in love with his super saturated colors.
|
I love it. I have smaller sized quilts that just cover the top of the bed over a plain white duvet, just to add colour.
|
Ohh so pretty!! I can give you my address if it needs a home :) I would do what doodledo suggested and put a black border around it and use it any way you can. It would make a wonderful happy dreary day reading quilt.
|
I think it's beautiful as is, but a black border would look nice too.
Another idea would be to add small splashes of color throughout the black border. If you had some scraps of the bright colors, you could add small squares of it to the border. |
It is beautiful! If you don't have anymore of the fabric, I think I would remove a row of four and add three squares to the bottom. That will leave one square for a pillow and I would add a narrow black border and binding. Is it just my screen but the right bottom corner square looks a little different colour? I would put that one in a pillow.

can you get any solids in the colors of the top? if so, do a black border, then a border of the solids cut in sections about the size of your 'frame' around the square and separate those by black sashing in the size of the current black 'sashing' and then another black border.
it's a beautiful top. |
I agree...great looking quilt, a nice solid border would be perfect.

I ran out of the magenta rose fabric, I used a gold one instead! In those days, when I liked a fabric, I bought a little in every colorway! |
I might take a row off one side and put it on the bottom, so instead of being 4x4 blocks, it's 3x5. Then it might be a better lap size. Then bind or boarder on black. Any way you do it's it's still very pretty.

I would add a black or dark border. It would make it Pop.
Great colors. |
This is beautiful. Does it need to be square? If not, what about removing one row & incorprate in the backing. Thank you for sharing.

very nice quilt.......

I think this is the perfect solution although I don't believe 70x70 is too large for a lap quilt!

its very nice i think blacks borders would look good
|
Yes, a black border would be perfect. If you need to make it longer just do the top and bottom border bigger than the sides. If you need it larger add a thin lime green strip between two wider black strips. I think that would be very striking. Your quilt is beautiful!
|
I think this beautiful quilt is perfect for a tv watching quilt. I wouldn't change a thing on it.

That's just fantastically gorgeous! I'm actually working on a quilt in that pattern right now for my cousin, though in far less stunning colors. Love what you did with it. Really, really nice.
From all the comments I've read, I really like the idea of removing one row and adding to the bottom, and then making a pillow out of the 'odd' (but still gorgeous and perfectly in keeping) square! |
I have one that size also, I pull it over me on those especially cold nights
|
I love it! I think if you want to add borders do so. It will still be beautiful with or without.
|
I rarely make a "normal" sized quilt.Leave it as it is and bind.it.Its very pretty
|
I think all of mine are odd sizes- unless I have followed a pattern without any changes along the way. If you don't want another border, don't bother. I have a few that are on the backs of chairs for the kids to wrap up in while watching TV at night. Or, you have a quick gift when you need it.
|
It's a beautiful quilt and I agree with several to add a plain border.
|
I would definitely add a border. I would do the black. It sure is gorgeous but definitely needs a border.
|
This one would be hard to add larger boarders to one side without making it look odd. If you have enough fabric, maybe you could just add another row to it. It is beautiful fabric and the pattern is great for it. Too bad it doesn't go with your decor. It would make a nice throw for the back of a couch.
|
There's nothing wrong with a square quilt. All it needs is a black binding. It is too gorgeous to be unfinished.

Beautiful like it is! Over the back of the couch! Black border would be great too!!:-)
|
If you have more fabric to make more blocks how about another row on the bottom - 4 wide x 5 long
|
Just lovely, great job and thank you for sharing, add black border
Have a Blessed day Ellen |
In my eye, I can easily see a black border which would carry out the theme of bordering all the blocks with black. I'd go for an even border extending the finished quilt to approx. 72x72. JMHO!
|
Is there a 6 to 9 year old girl in your life? It would be perfect for a child that age. It is a beautiful quilt!
|
I wouldn't move anything, just add a black border, it's a striking quilt. As someone already suggested, if the size doesn't work any other way, fold it and drape it over a chair, and when you feel the need for a big snuggly lap quilt there it is.
|
Thanks all, wonderful ideas.
Actually the shot cotton used is Kona Espresso, not black:) I think I know what I'd do now. Will post a picture when everything is done. Thanks again:) Sierra, I don't have girls. I have two Nerf wielding Lego playing boys! |
